Just more bad journalism here; another article about beer because it's a hot topic.

The article states "Americans spend $60 a month on craft beer, according to a new survey — more than the average cost of a cell phone bill" but never actually alludes to it's headline, that "Millennials are beer snobs".

If that really is the premise, however, I don't think it holds together. There are plenty of cheap-beer drinkers who spend more than $2 a day on beer!

So what do you think, are millenials beer snobs? Is $2 a day on beer even questionable when plenty of people spend more than that on coffee? Is everyone who goes to Starbucks a "coffee snob"?

Snob is a slippery term that definitely has a bad connotation in my mind. But I guess it sounds less snobby on the writer's part than saying "Millenials Drink Less Bad Beer Than Their Predecessors". I spend more on food per month than on my phone and even if I were to buy mainly nice food I don't think that would make me a food snob.

A poorly written headline that is just there to get clicks and it goes after millennials?? Say it ain't so!

Also, who's cell phone bill / utility bill is consistently less than $60?!

To be fair, the article itself is poorly written as well.

 Not sure what the point is. Kinda a "dog-bite-man" story, isn't it? One's a necessity while the other is an annoying, addictive luxury.

To paraphrase those great American philosophers of the 1960s,

It is funny how these articles come up but lets look at life in general.
    1. A cup of coffee each day on way to work $2 x 5 =$10 x 4 weeks =$40 a month.
    2. Eat out at lunch with co-workers 1-2 days a week about $80 a month.
I could go on and on but hell, spending $60 a month is just out right snobbery, really? In today's world that is not a lot of money, least in my book.

"People spend more on craft beer every month than they do on their monthly cell phone and utilities bills".
It is obvious to me this person who wrote the article does not own a house, does the person know the cost of utilities a month? Gas, electric, water/sewer plus cell phone? Sorry, 60 bucks a month lol ya ok. If my utilities and cell bill were under 60 a month I would be doing back flips.

    Cheers

Yes, “snob” is misused. Being a snob requires that one looks down on others with different tastes and think they are somehow inferior.

    Shit......if I drank 3 Hamms A day for a month I’m a bit over $40 a month.

Consider I drink on average 1.75-2.25 beers a day all year based on my Untappd totals. I try to stay in the $1 per beer average. With Hamms being added in with better beer I spend over $70 a month on beer since I don’t hit $1 much anymore as beer keeps going up, but I’m close.

If my utilities were $60 a month I would be spending closer to $100+ a month on beer.

    Enjoy

Not to beat a dead horse about how ridiculous the metric they used was, but does this mean that according to the How much do you spend per month thread/survey, 80-ish% of this site is millenials? Or snobs? Or both?

I feel less smart having read that. But it is a good example of something poorly conceived and poorly written.

    "I'm a beer ****, not a beer snob."

I love my Cantillon, DeGarde and Bruery, but I also get down with some Budweiser, High Life and Rolling Rock all summer long. . .

More proof that the author of the MarketWatch piece accepted a market research firm's completely unscientific sampling and survey methods and thus conclusions as divining the behavior pattern of an entire generation.

$60 a month, I'm not a beer snob and I spend that in about two weeks.

Sheesh, I wish my phone bill was less than $60/month, and that I only spent $60/month on beer.

Can you tell us how you know or discovered that the research firm used unsound methodology? Also do you have a link or reference? Thanks!

Hell, I see someone with a 15 pack of PBR or Old Style every time I'm in the grocery store -- and I don't go that often. Lots'a folks spending more than $2 a day on beer -- and they aren't all millennials and it's not all craft.
Ooh -- me, me -- pick me!

I get unlimited voice, text, and data for $35/month, plus tax. Had to buy my phone outright (200), but that was over 3 years ago, and I expect at least another year out of it.

But yeah, put me in the more than 2 bucks a day category for beer.
