I saw an article on why we love beer of coffee and I am asking if it's really true that we drink for its psychoactive effect? What is your personal experience with this? For me, I think that this psychoactive effect is important, but if we can combine this with a tasty or good quality beer it's even more enjoyable.

Flavors you enjoy enhance the experience but as with any intoxicant our brains will learn to live their taste if we enjoy the effect

“People like the way coffee and alcohol make them feel. That’s why they drink it. It’s not the taste.”

That could not be further from the truth. I drink coffee and beer because I happen to love the flavors each provides.

So do people seek out tasty food because of how it makes them feel? Or do they seek out tasty food because its awesome tasting.

Also, if the study had any merit at all they would recognize most consumers of coffee and beer have a higher tolerance to them and don't get the so called psychoactive effect as easily. I drink a ton of coffee and don't get the buzz others get from it, I am tolerant to the effects. So why am I drinking it then?

Clearly the person or persons responsible for this claptrap don't like fun at all. And seem to be more interested in a thesis than reality. I drink diet soda with caffeine, and I drink beer with alcohol.
What exactly is so mysterious about a speed buzz or an alcohol buzz? This has been known for a 1000 years or more.
Just more money down the drain telling us how bad we are.
But we already know we is Bad!

I would disagree with you.(AZBeer) When I was young and went to bars I didn't care for flavors but for the effect. After that, I discover the taste of some craft beers. And I think that now the effect is a big added value to my drinking experience. I think it's not easy to separate both sides.

The study indicated that its the only reason why folks consume these items is for the effect. Sure when I was in college I drank to get messed up. But as I got older I drink because I love the flavors, craft of it all, and experiencing new stuff. I rarely drink anymore with the intent to get buzzed. Now yes, it is a side effect but I think stating that the sole reason is to get an effect is false. I think there are folks that do seek it for the effect, that is certain, but I cannot say the entire population does just for that.

Thank you, simple and effective way of what I was trying to say. :stuck_out_tongue: If I was in it for the effect I would chug the hard stuff and be out of it in 20 min. Or I would slam down 4 red bulls and be done.

Obviously we drink great beer because we love the flavors and the effect. If I go out to dinner and I don't like the beer selection, I don't buy anything. Why? Because I don't like the flavor of the beers they are offering. Who doesn't like a buzz though? I also drink coffee because I like the flavor. I have had a good amount of coffee every day for the past 15 years or so. If I don't have it, I hate how I feel (like death!), so it's clearly connected.

The issue with studies like this is that you can pretty much use any example to claim a theory you have.

I could argue that people who love to shop don't do so out of the need for items but for the comforting effect they feel from shopping? Is that not the same thing? I know a lot of people who love to go to the store, they need zip but they love going, it makes them happy just looking around, etc.

    Hey, I should write a study myself.

I think that the fact that I prefer beer over spirits is for the taste and that you don't get too much effect drinking beers with moderation.

Is there any studies made to an animal to see if they can crave for alcohol and not for taste???

An animal cannot convey that they enjoy flavor? You have no way of knowing if they want the drink/food out of addiction to it or enjoyment of the flavor.

There are people eating surströmming in years when there isn't a famine, I think this is something which should be looked into.

The title of the article is misleading. As they often are.

The study shows a genetic link to the psychoactive effects of certain beverages causes us to consume these drinks. The value of the research is that it has been assumed the genetic link was related to taste.

"People like the way coffee and alcohol make them feel. It's not the taste"

Now this is probably going too far. The research may show there is a link to the psychoactive genes but that does not also mean people do not like to get buzzed and drink coffee and alcohol for this reason. Both reasons can be true, and without reading the entire study (I'm not) that claim requires a fair bit more explaining.

OK. Got to go. Happy Hour.
    Cheers.

I think the conclusion of this study is probably basically correct, if you're genetically predisposed to not enjoy the effects of alcohol or caffeine, you probably won't consume those things (caffeine maybe a little less). And as far as enjoying the taste... I mean, they serve alcohol in all tastes, Lagavulin to Lime-a-Rita. Coffee is a little more distinctive in that sense but again, you've got people drinking it black and people who turn it into essentially a milkshake.
