Drinking Ayinger Frühlingsbier. At 5.5% abv and 12.8% plato I wonder if this is the same beer as their Jahrhundert Bier, only unfiltered? They look similar in color as well from the pictures (I haven't had the Jahrhundert Bier). Anyhow. The beer is pale colored, straw colored maybe? The aroma is very fresh with some mild bright hops and some yeastiness that reminds me of some keller beers. The taste is malty and mildly sweet and has a good body, mildly yet brightly hop aromatic and with a good balancing bitterness. The aftertaste is bittersweet. I think it is very tasty, well rounded in its flavor and it does taste like the Export beer it is labeled as. I'm glad I had the chance to try it.

very good description of many of the elements that (to my mind/palate) comprise the Ayinger "house" character. Prost

Did you find that at the Oktoberfest? I don't recall seeing it in any of the tents, but maybe it became more popular in recent years?

Just my feelings as toe eating and drinking around Munich.

I went to Oktoberfest fall of 1998. Munich has been visited many times since.

Shorter answer: I have not seen these cans in my local beer retailers.

Longer answer: Based upon what I see on my local beer retailers' shelves if they started exporting these beer cans today I will see them 6+ months from now.

    Cheers!

So, to answer my own question, it looks like the Mahr's FB page says launch in Bamberg on May 10 2019. Reading the post, it seems lots of Germans (Franken?) not very happy about the cans, even the US word "shitstorm" has been added to the anglicized language. Canned beer has long been a stigma of "cheap" because it's mostly only sold at the discounters (Lidl, Netto, Aldi & Friends).

That was the first thought I had when I saw the cans -- Mahrs takes a chance.

It’s funny, I shared a beer with a brewer in Erlangen and he told me beer kept its shape best in a can. Is he correct? I always think cans are kinda frowned upon by us??

The advantage of cans is that they permit zero ingress of light and oxygen (air). These qualities make cans a superior package to bottles.

Also, for the beer industry they are lighter in weight and thereby reduce transportation costs.
Cans are now very popular with craft beer consumers in the US. Over the past couple of years the beer geeks demonstrated a preference for 16 ounce cans packaged in 4-pack. A number of craft breweries near me have switched their canning lines from 12 ounce cans to 16 ounce cans to fulfill this demand. IMO cans have lost their stigma in the US.

    Cheers!

    LOL!

The beer geeks in the US would agree with you here. Is 16 ounces (473 ml) still too little for you?

    Cheers!

    A Schlüggla U?
Really not sure how that makes me feel. On the one hand, I'd personally love small cans of U readily aviable to me for outdoor drinking in the park and nature and such... but still, I can see how these tiny cans seem...really weird in franonian context.

So, the format of cans is not objectionable to you but the small size does bother you?

    Cheers!
