Good morning BA's! Is spring ever going to come to the Chicago area? Its a balmy 45° this am. So much for the nonsense. Todays tasty'n delicious beer is a collaboration between Hailstorm, (Chicago area) and Listermann from Cincinnati.

    From a 16 oz can.
Pours verk dark brown with a frothy khaki head.
    Aroma is mild chocolate.
Flavor is a too bit sweet for my liking, but drinkable.
    Medium bodied.
BA's listing call this a Russian Imperial Stout, I don't think so. Untapped, and the brewers label calls it an Imperial Dark Ale. I was expecting a Black IPA, or a Cascadian IPA. Whatever they want to call is fine with me. Overall, its a pretty tasty beer.
This is a collaboration beer from Hailstorm and Listermann Brewing Co. from Cincinnati.

Next up, a style more to my liking, by a brewery I've always loved: Sixpoint Citrus Jammer.

I liked the regular Jammer more than most, finding it to be a very enjoyable - but not quite world class - Gose. Adding citrus seems like a no-brainer.

The nose is very disappointing, and a little odd: it honestly smells like a pilsner. The malt dominates, and the citrus is light enough that one could confuse it for hops. A bit of salt, like an ocean breeze, gives you a clue that this is actually a Gose.

The palate, however, delivers. Very salty, moderately tart, with a light-to-moderate pucker. Lemon and lime show up with a juicy, mildly sweet tartness both up front and on the finish. The salt plays with the malt in a weird way, with an odd, meaty, but not unpleasant tone that pops up (even on the nose, albeit not prominently).

The body is truly exceptional. For a 4% brew, this never feels thin or watery. Full review below:

    3.58 / -10.3%

I'm shocked: this beer got the exact same weighted score as my last review (Athena Paradiso), but it got there in a completely different way! It really does reflect my opinion, though: this is a very enjoyable beer (I'm enjoying it more than Athena Paradiso), but it isn't really a world class gose. The mouthfeel is incredible, but beyond that it's simply enjoyable.

Maybe I'm a harsh grader today. We'll see; plenty more beers in line to test out that theory.

    Cheers!

Happy Mother's Day! We just found out this week that our youngest daughter will become a mother in December. Her first child, and our third grandchild. My wife is happy because both her sons managed to remember what day this is.
My new beer for today is one sent to me by @SomethingClever. It is Buchenrauch, a smoked lager from Wolf's Ridge Brewing. I happen to like smoked beers, and this one is a beautiful example of the style.
In a pint glass the beer is a dark amber color with a small tan head. The head fades quickly to a thin film.
Aroma of smoke, bread, and bacon.
Taste of smoke and bacon up front, then some bread, finishing with some nice caramel.
    Light mouthfeel.
    Smoky without being too smoky.
    Thank you, Dave

    Sixpoint tropical jammer
    ..cloudy orange gold color
..medium light carbonation with around a medium body. This would be great on a hot day as it has a light pleasant feel
..aroma is almost exactly like a tropical creamsicle ice pop. There's some malt ,citrus, and citrus peel
..taste is like a creamsicle again, fruity, mildly sweet, salty, and just a bit of bitter citrus peel. Almost no alcohol, drinks almost like a virgin fruit drink.
...overall it was really flavorful, somewhat complex, and it really did taste like a creamsicle in a beer can. Would make a great dessert beer with fruit salad at a bbq[IMG]petrol stations open 24 hours

    Good morning all you goobers.

I'm dipping back into my South Africa haul for one of the last bottles I have left from the other side of the globe.

Jack Black's is one of the major regional craft breweries down there, and this Cape Pale is their APA offering.
Best by date is 02/15/20, so... I'm assuming they are putting a one year expiration date?!? Seems optimistic, and that probably means I should have opened this closer after I got home, but whatever. I'm overthinking things.

Pour is actually quite lovely... golden/light amber body that is not quite crisp, but generally pretty clear. Head is fuzzy white half finger of foam that retains a decent amount of heft as it settles in to a buzz cut across the middle and accumulation in the corners. Minimal lacing.

Nose is refreshing: grassy hops with maybe a bit of floral high notes and some citrus, with earthy sweet grains.

Flavour doesn't quite carry through from the aroma, instead swerving directly into dull earthy citrus bitter hops. Dry hop character is there, and there is some malt countersupport, but without the bright sweet notes of the nose.

Aggressive carbonation masks a thinner body, and that same dull pithy bitterness carries throughout the long finish and lingers.

Hope y'all have something tasty to sip on as well, and don't forget to wish a Happy Mothers Day where appropriate!

I don’t stress too much, never have. My wife on the other hand can turn a mole hill into a mountain in 2 seconds flat. However I love her in spite of her flaws and imperfections, that’s what makes us human.

On another note, sparked by a recent thread here I had the pleasure of an in person BA meet up with @Buck89 yesterday at Southern Grist in Nashville. John, it was great to meet you and I am looking forward to running in to you again down the road! I’ve got at least one beer from that trip planned for later today, but my first one comes by way of @strohme2 from one of his boxes that defied the laws of packing in the NBS #nein.

    Firestone XXII anniversary ale
I loved sticky monkey so I’m stoked for this one.
An opaque dark brown with lighter brown around the edges. One finger of light tan head recedes quickly to a thin bubbly ring around the outside. Sweetness hits you right off the bat. Nose is sweet toffee, dark candied fruits, and brown sugar from the sticky monkee and some rum hints without the booze. I’ve never had gin but my wife says it can be sweet as well. Taste is off the chain and layered with so many flavors, I’m gonna have to put on my @superspak hat to solve this puzzle. Some heat initially from the alcohol, dark fruits again, sweetness again, some coffee sometimes on the finish. Flavors seem to change with every sip but never disappoint. Some warming as it goes down, which I like with these high ABV brews. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with light carbonation, just a little fizz. Overall this is fantastic and my first run in with the anny ale has been an enjoyable one! Thanks again Justin! Side note, I have another of these to age so I’m excited to see what a year can do to it as well.

Happy Sunday/Mother's Day NBS players. Another rather cold and rainy spring day here on the island. May has just been awful in terms of weather here. The Mets are already rained-out so I'll be inside, watching tv, and knocking back brews all day.

My first new beer today is Siberian Black Magic Panther, imperial stout, from Westbrook brewing. The brew checks in at 12% abv, and with a 2/20/17 bottle date. The beer is provided by @Roguer and the 3 NBS BIF #9 boxes that he sent. We catch pretty good Westbrook distro here but for whatever dumb reason I never grabbed this. Been close a few times.

A pure black color on the pour with a fast head of brown bubbles. The nose is very RIS with lots of chocolate malts. Those notes carry right over from the nose and onto the initial sips. Big chocolate malts upfront, with a smooth flow and finish. Have I mentioned chocolate malt yet? Seriously, this is about as non-adjunct and straight forward as an imperial stout gets. Additional notes of coffee, cocoa powder, smoke, charred oak, vanilla, molasses, and brown sugar. Full bodied with a touch of decadent chocolate cake flavor going on. Getting a touch note of soy/coloa flavor going on but nothing too off-putting-which may be equated to its age. The abv hides nicely and I'm really starting to feel it.

Overall, a pretty good beer. I really like the straight forward approach and it reminds me a lot of the Stone RIS of yesteryears. Right around a 4 here.

Good afternoon, BA, on this rainy, cold day from The Garden State. Breakfast at my parents’ house for Mother’s Day and grocery shopping complete. A lot of cooking for lunch and dinner meal prep ahead, but first, a new beer.

    FFF Psycho Naught

This is my first lager from FFF, and it comes courtesy of @AyatollahGold along with this nice, proper teku. I’m going blind to an extent here as I have not done any research on this beer other than knowing it is a lager.

Look: The beer pours a translucent, deep gold / pale amber color. It appears darker in the picture posted above. An ever so slight haze to the beer. An off white, densely packed head that settles down to a finger with a lot of lacing at the mouth of this teku. Tiny bubbles are visible as they stream up from the bottom. As I work my way to the bottom of the glass, I am left with a lot of lacing. A fantastic looking beer.

Smell: Bready malt profile with prominent notes of fresh cut grass, lemon peel, earthy, herbal and a bit catty. There is a slight briney aroma too. Really excellent nose. Very clean, crisp and light.

Taste: My first impression is that this lager is hop forward with an inviting amount of bitterness. The flavor nicely tracks the aroma with a fresh grassiness, lemon peel and pith, earthy/herbal hop reminiscent of very light bay leaf/oregano. Crackery. A touch of spicy hop. The finish on the lager is what always seems to drive the style home for me. This beer is not one dimensional and shifts to a nice bready, bitter and dry finish after the initial hop profile.

Mouthfeel: Medium mouthfeel with a crisp carbonation and a lemon pith bitterness and dryness on the finish.

Overall: Over the last year I’ve had the pleasure of trying many FFF courtesy of some generous BA’s through different BIF’s. My experience with them is that they are an excellent brewery, after having tried a number of different styles. The greatness of this lager only further solidifies my opinion of FFF. Also, the bottle format, as is the label art. Hoppy, bitter, bready, crisp and clean beer.

I'm taking a break from reviewing sours to switch it up with something a little darker - and three times as strong as my last choice.

Hubbard's Cave Mocha Pot de Creme, a 12% ABV imperial stout flavored with chocolate, coffee, vanilla beans, and lactose

This thing is phenomenally sweet, but rich, dry, roasty coffee bean flavor is found throughout. Ever eat a chocolate covered espresso bean? It's like that: sweet chocolate surrounding an organic, earthy, bitter coffee tone that seems to just rest in your teeth.

The body is massive and creamy, and almost seems to expand in your mouth; a small sip is really filling. Mild warmth, but no bite from the high ABV.

    Happy Mother's Day NBS.
Sadly, my wife (who is an amazing mother) is being an awesome aunt today. She flew up to Spokane for the graduation of our niece, a diligent student, who earned a scholarship to Gonzaga. My wife and her sisters make sure there are always at least 3+ people representing the extended family at any and all graduations in the family-even when there is travel involved.

So my daughter and I miss her dearly today. It just doesn't feel right but we remind ourselves that her dedication to her nephews and nieces is just another extension of her loving, nurturing ways.

She did however send me some pics from Iron Goat Brewing. She loved the place. @woemad put this locale on my radar. So, hopefully my wife will wanna go back, with me in tow.

Be back later with one from @foundersasap . I'm going to hit the Java Chip Mint Stout he sent me from Odd Side Ales.
