Dang, good to see beer from our local boys who made good being consumed in Germany! Was a pleasure to be part of the fan base who got to taste the metamorphosis of their sour IPA's when they started brewing them at a small pub in New Paltz, NY (my nearest town) and now in their huge new brewery. Glad to see you enjoyed it. Cheers!

My wife left town a little earlier for work, so I will drink some more! Still working my way through the onslaught of beer from @strohme2 Justin my porch groans every time the mail runs now.

This one is Goodnight Bodacious from Shorts brewing co. The label says it’s a double black ipa, but everything I’ve read about it seems to suggest that it’s more of a barleywine. Here we go:

The appearance at first glance is black, however this is much more of a deep mahogany with amber and caramel flecks at the edge of the glass and a translucent body. The mocha colored head resembles a stout. The aroma suggests barleywine as caramel malts abound, along with toffee, and a sweet smell like candies fruit. Some earthy tones and the faintest bit of pine also show up in the nose. The taste is both bitter and sweet simultaneously, sweet up front like toffee and caramel, then some bittering hops show up, but the sweet flavor doesn’t leave. Some earthy tones weave in and out and some chocolate shows up on the finish. Mouthfeel is mildly prickly with good carbonation and also creamy. Fuller than medium but nowhere close to chewy. Overall I’m really digging this one, even if I don’t really agree with the classification, but really who cares. Good beer is good beer, call it shit soup and if it tastes like this I’ll have a glass.

16 oz can about 6 weeks old poured into a teku glass. Pours a bright yellow color with about a finger and a half of head. 4/5 The nose consists of lemon, grapefruit, grass, and pine. 4/5 Taste is tropical fruits, lemon, and a nice sticky bitter finish. 4.25/5Medium body and medium light carbonation. 4.25/5 Great, drinkable DIPA. This brewery is putting out great beer. 4.25/5 for a BA score of 4.18/5

I am finally back after getting the list of chores done my wife left. First beer up is from @EMH73 it is a triple IPA collaboration from Sand City and District 96 Beer Factory. It clocks in at 10.5%, I usually do not find many TIPAs that I really enjoy most I have tried struggle to cover that big boozy nose and flavor up. I usually stick to DIPAs but I knew if anyone could pull it off it would be Sand City. There was zero alcohol on the nose and just a hint in the taste, even now as I am 3/4 of the way through the can there is none on the nose and just a little more in the taste as it has warmed. This is an excellent TIPA in my book!!!

Appearance 4.5 - Pours opaque bright orange with a big soapy white head great retention. Sheets of sticky lacing over the glass.

Aroma 4 - Mild tropical notes of mango and pineapple combined with a big floral nose, hint of spice, slightly grassy. there is no alcohol coming through on the nose at all.

Taste 4.5 - the tropical fruit is much more pronounced in the taste. Huge amounts of overly ripe mango and pineapple. The floral/grassy flavors are about the same as they were in the nose, the flavors are well balanced between sweet and bitter. nice citrus peel and grapefruit on the end. There is just a hint of the alcohol in the taste.

Feel 4.25 - Medium bodied soft carbonation. Slight burn and warmth from the alcohol. nice dry finish.

Overall 4.31 - Really well done TIPA, not one of my favorite styles due to most of the ones I have had generally have a ton of alcohol showing through in the nose or taste.

Excellent hoppy saison. Great fluffy head retention/thick foamy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big lemon, lime, mandarin orange, red grapefruit, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, red apple, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, clove, and pine hops/yeast; with moderate wheat, cracker, white bready malts; herbal, floral, grassy hops, and yeast earthiness. Moderate peppery yeast spiciness; and pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, grassy bitterness on the finish. High carbonation, light-medium body, and moderately crisp/clean finishing. Balanced bready/grainy malts, sticky hops, and citrus resins/rinds in the mouthfeel. Moderate increasing bitter/spicy/carbonated dryness; no hop/fruit astringency. Very flavorful/refreshing, not watery for 5.4%. Great Mandarina Bavaria, Amarillo, Pacifica profile. Perfectly balanced between citrus/earthy hops, vibrant citrus zest, and classic saison yeast complexity; with a nice solid pale/wheat malt backbone. Zero residual sweetness with crisp dryness. No complaints. 4

Hemel & Aarde, a Smoked Imperial Stout aged in Bowmore Single Malt Scotch barrels by dutch brewer De Molen (11% ABV)

Pours a pitch black coloration with a medium, creamy, mocha-colored head. Smells of caramel malt and a lovely, peaty smokiness, as well as lighter notes of chocolate and licorice.

Taste follows the nose, with a great balance of slightly roasted, sweet'ish caramel malt and subtle smoked, peaty notes, as well as lighter notes of dark fruit: raisins, honey and vanilla, with just a hint a hint of chocolate, licoriceand leather. Finishes bittersweet, with a light bitterness and some smoked peat and vanilla lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a rich body and light/medium carbonation.

An excellent Scotch BA Imperial Stout with a superb balance of sweet and peaty notes, with a nice bitterness and slight roastiness to round things out. Proof once again that De Molen is one of the premier BA breweries in Europe.

I really am starting to feel blessed for living in Europe and being able to sample all of these peaty Imperial Stouts aged in Single Malt Scotch barrels, which I'm starting to enjoy a lot more tan the usual BBA Imperial Stouts.

Wow I really want some of that. Only had a couple from Sand City, super high quality. District 96 kills it too.

Your post reminds me I need to make it down to District 96 again soon. Great thing is next door is a restaurant they own that has amazing food and amazing guest tap list. If they were closer to here (1 hour 10 min) I would move in.

Pipeworks Simcoe. Fantastic DIPA as expected. Lasting rocky head retention/thick foamy lacing. Aromas and flavors of huge red grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, honeydew melon, berries, citrus peel/zest, wood, and light peppercorn/pine hops; with moderate honey, biscuit dough, light caramel/toasted malt sweetness; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; creamy/silky/bready malts, some sticky hops, and light resins/rinds in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing lingering bitter dryness; no cloying/astringency. Super smooth/soft, minimal warming 9.5%. Amazing Simcoe profile. Extremely juicy, and lightly dank/earthy hops; with a nice sized dark/bready malt backbone. Not overly sweet/heavy from lingering dryness. Another easy winner as usual. 4.28

    Good evening NBS
I was gifted a 4 pack of this beer recently and thought I would give it a try here...
    The review:
12oz bottle with "best by 09.01.19" printed in black at the top of the neck. Served in my Spiegelau IPA glass at fridge temp with 75 IBU stated on the label, but no ABV ( it's 6.5% per the brewer's website). The beer pours bright light honey in color with off white head. The head recedes to a puffy island and thin ring leaving a few spots of lacing. The aroma is unappealing vegetable. The taste is light semisweet caramel with a melon or berry hop flavor that retains the vegetable note. Bitterness is medium to heavy. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, adequately carbonated and somewhat dry in the finish. Overall, not so good. Nothing comes together here. If this were a friend's first home brew attempt, I might be more polite.

Cheers all and enjoy the new beer in your glass today!

P.S. I should mention that this beer comes from a southern Indiana brewer located in a county with a very tourist driven economy. Ironically, I am headed to Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg with my family tomorrow. I suppose I'm prepared now.

Happy NBS day, friends. I am most definitely a beer enthusiast (otherwise known as an “overrater”), so the opportunity to share with this esteemed group my beer drinking partner excites me.

Of course, my beer drinking partner on most nights is my beautiful bride Mrs O. We’ve been married 29 years, and she’s very aware of my foibles and follies, especially when it comes to beer nerdery. She’s attended multiple beer feats with me, she’s trekked 2-1/2 hours- one way - to secure Pseudo Sue bombers, she’s been to Surly more times than Watson can count. As you can see, I outkicked my coverage .....

She’s a keeper of the highest magnitude.

I was going a different direction today with my beer selections, but when I saw our friend @Roguer review this, I had to reconnoiter.

    PS: proper glassware

PPS: I agree wholeheartedly with his thoughts about the ratings for this beer and New Belgium.

Beautiful hazy orange color with a dense, creamy off-white head that frames this beer perfectly. Not a turbid haze by any means, this is the haze that lets light and shapes through. Gorgeous beer.

The nose has juicy, spicy citrus aromas and some nice malt notes. Everything is amplified on the taste, though - there’s a heaping helping of juicy tangerines, there’s apricot, pineapple, a substantial malt flavor, and spicy pepper, all with that creamy head tracking down the glass. Man, is this well done.

The mouthfeel is spry and pugnacious - this beer has a punch. It’s widely available, it’s cost effective, and it checks a lot of boxes in the hazy, juicy IPA category. I’m glad I tried this, and I’ll try it again.

I have to be honest the first Sand City beers I had were a thank you box from a ninja box I sent out. It was their anniversary beers from last year I believe?? I have not had many beers from these guys but everyone I have had has been great. I have never even heard of District 96, do they can anything?

but felt the need to wait for NBS!

    16 oz. can.
Moderate to vigorous pour yields a one inch white head over a hazy light golden body with some nice lacing. Nose of an English garden (hmm, Triumphs are from England, hence the hop's name?) with a bit of sweet citrus thrown in for good measure. Taste mirrors nose somewhat, but leaning towards the sweet citrus side, showing concentrated orange, akin to Bergamot with a bit of spruce and spice! Intense is a word that comes to mind. Nice feel and overall, wow! This is so unique, and delicious. Cheers to John K. for the use of this wonderful new hop from Crosby Hop Farm in Oregon!

My experience with Sand City is way too limited also, just tastes at shares, good stuff, superior quality. Dist. 96 supposed to start canning but I have been out of that loop for eight months and not sure they have started yet. Maybe someone on this thread has better info? Eight months? Wow really need to get down there. The only canned ones of theirs I have had were collabs with Equilibrium, the rest all enjoyed from growlers or at the pub.

Good afternoon and happy New Block Sunday, BAs. Not much to report. Made it through week two of my new insanity, went to a couple of parties this weekend including my neighbors 100th birthday, and just trying to take advantage of some gorgeous weather by being as lazy as possible...

To answer @cjgiant 's question in as little as a Craig manner as possible (meaning I don't want to put everyone to sleep), I drink with anyone. Myself is my best company, my wife second, friends, family, and visitors third. Oh, complete strangers too. They might be the best actually. My brother and my Steve might be my favorites though. Damn... So much for not Craiging that one.

    Anyway, Beer:30.

    Block 15
Turbulent Consequence: Pearl- Spontaneously Fermented Ale (Lambic)

Classic lambic methods, eh?.... Block 15, eh?... SOLD! And what a beautiful beer she is, bragging shiny bright twenty four carat gold, agitated bubbles soaring upwards to support an appropriate mother of pearl white foam that hugs the coastline of the glass.

The aroma. My Lord, the aroma. Apple cider vinegar spiked with sweet and sour grapes. Splintered oak and even a dash of vanilla. On this warm and sunny day, nothing could smell better.

Following suit, the drink is tasty and refreshing. Sour apples, green and red grapes, wood shavings, and a dash of ginger and lime. A champagne aftertaste with a spike if that vanilla, and the slightest bit of "barnyard funk", each sip getting better and better as the liquid embraces its warmer surroundings.

It feels as it should, and exactly as its looks and aroma, even flavor, would indicate. Light. Tart. Refreshing. Slightly slick, perhaps even oily, but the acidity quickly cuts it down. An exceptionally oaky-dry finish once again maddens me as the glass empties too quickly. After each sip, an uncontrollable lick of the lips to get every drop of the tart, delicious residue.

I've said it before time and time again, if it says Block 15, I'm buying it. Every time I regret only buying one. If I see Pearl again, I'll be damned sure to buy a few. I think this beer is exceptional as is, but I would love to see how this one develops.

After my official review, I gave Pearl a rating of 4.3 with an rDev of +0.9%. Cheers.

New River Roost IPA #2 Sunday

Here we have the second and final IPA from this brewery sent to me by the generous @jhavs

Big Smooth, coming in at 8.2%.

Look: This beer is similar in appearance to the last one. Opaque, and murky, while maintaining the “brightness” in color that attracts me visually to the style. . Golden amber color. A touch darker it seems than the 6.7% IPA I had earlier, but this beer embodies the same appearance. That of the NEIPA. It is an attractive looking beer, with a tall, fluffy and bone white head that settles down a bit, but still sits a finget high with a lot of lacing left behind. Zero visible carbonation.

Smell: Creamy, smoothie-like tropical fruit, including ripe mango, a hint of pineapple, and a sweet bready malt profile. Neither green nor minty like the last one. Also, none of the cooked grain profile noted on the prior beer. Zero indications of the 8.2% ABV.

Taste: This IPA is all sweet and juicy tropical and stone fruit smoothie on the palate. Mostly sweet mango, with some blueberry and white peach. Slightly dry with some red delicious apple skin bitterness on the finish.

Feel: Smooth and creamy. Medium level of carbonation. Very light and airy on the palate.

Overall: Another great IPA from River Roost. Lots of tropical and stone fruit up front balanced out by a dry and moderately bitter finish. Excellent stuff. Dangerously drinkable at 8.2%. This beer lives up to its name.

Once again, thank you @jhavs for this delicious IPA from River Roost. Another well crafted beer.

Poured into a 13 oz Funk Brewing Teku glass not sure when it was canned. Pours a very attractive cloudy red raspberry with a 2 finger white head, with hints of pink and leaves very nice thin lines of lace as it slowly settles. 4.75

Smell one dimensional and simply wonderful. Cherry, vanilla, guava, pineapple, and grapefruit rind. 4.25

Taste follows cherry, vanilla, guava, and pineapple little to no bitterness but so crazy tasty. 4.5

Mouthfeel is big, soft gentle carbonation, maybe a little sticky but not dry, and at 7.5% ABV extremely drinkable. 4.5

Overall I am a sucker for this style and I love the flavors in this one. Really a treat. 4.5[IMG] @Nachos4two this is a wow beer! Thanks man.

Pours black, tan head, some leakage to mahogany on the edges, but still a beautiful beer. The barrel is prominent on the nose, but the blueberry and maple are not shrinking violets in the least - there’s a lot going on here.

The barrel is present on the taste, but the blueberry wins all the awards on the taste - it allows the maple to strut around a bit, but there is no question about the star of this production. It is the sweet , slightly tart blueberry.

The mouthfeel is a little softer than I’d like to see with a 9.5% ABV beer, but that’s only a slight demerit, because this is outstanding, IMHO.
