IMHO, there's really been a turn around regarding the availability of high quality pilsners in the NW over the past 5 or 10 years. In addition to the ones you mentioned, Wayfinder and Rosenstadt breweries are both lager focused breweries that are making very good pils. What's really been something of a game changer for us, is that both pFriem and Heater Allen can their pilsners now (this is pretty recent - within the last year I want to say).

It can sometimes be difficult to find a place that will do a crowler of pFriem and Heater Allen pils, but now that they're canned, you can find them pretty easily all over town. Pretty much the way you can find Victory pils and Sunshine pils (in season) over in your neck of the woods.

John, as a FYI Troegs Sunshine Pils has been a year-round product for over three years now.

    Cheers!

It feels like the last 12 months it’s come on strong although some breweries have been doing it for much longer.

If you’re in San Diego I would recommend Eppig, Fall Brewing and Societe. You’re not going to see them distributed outside of the taproom and maybe a tap or two around town though. Societe the Heiress or the Mistress both excellent. Eppig Natural Bridge and any of its variations. Fall Brewing Rise Above or Plenty for All. Each is somewhat sporadically on although at these places they will always have a couple good lagers on tap in my experience. Modern Times has been upping their lager game too. Ice is a solid Pilsner, Abbadon is an amazing Helles and then they’ve been doing some good Dunkel, schwarzbier and other one offs.

On my comment regarding west coast, I worded it poorly. I just meant west is getting into lagers more now. Still far behind the Midwest and East coast for interest in lagers. West coast is primarily Pilsner and helles I feel like. Not much diving into darker lagers.

LOL! I didn't realize that, but I'm glad to hear it. It's a very well made pils that absolutely should be available year round.

    Thanks for the update!

Thanks for those tips for San Diego Pilsners. It is nice to hear that things are improving in that regard.

It appears that San Diego is in its nascent stage for local Pilsners.

My dad bought his beers at Pat Deons, and his usual buy was Carling Black Label in 16 oz returnables. If I saw it here I’d buy it, I’m always a sucker for retro stuff.

Dale, normally I would have zero idea what you are talking about here but in yesterday's Philadelphia Inquirer there is a front page (and two full pages thereafter) article about Pasquale (Pat) Deon. He is the SEPTA* Board Chair and on page A18 is a LARGE photograph of Deon Square shopping center's sign with Pat Deon Beer-Soda-Cigars being one of the businesses listed.

    Small world, huh?

Ironically since it went year round I never see it here anymore.

I'd buy some every spring (I think it was a spring seasonal?) and it was fresh. Then it went year round, collected dust, was always out of date, and now it's no longer on our shelves.

Sunshine Pils is always available at my local beer retailers but needless to say it experiences a lot of competition in my area. I have had draft pints of Sunshine Pils lately but it has been a loooong time since I purchased cans (or bottles) of this beer. My most recent purchases were a 6-pack of Love City and a 6-pack of the 'reformulated' Victory Prima Pils.

    Cheers!

I’m drinking a Mason Jar Pils, they use German malts and surprisingly Mosaic hops. Similar beers - Trauger Pils, same dry cracker finish. I see you Jack making a face at the Hop choice but it works. How interesting would it be to have a Pils with rotating single hop, liked like Mikkeller did a few years ago. No reason to limit these to Saaz or other traditional hops, it ok to take a new twist to traditional beers.

I’m in PA and I have a hard tine finding this beer sometimes. When it was seasonal, it was everywhere. I can count on my local Wegmans to always have it, but outside of that it’s pretty hit or miss.

    LOL!

Dale, how prominent is the flavor/aroma of Mosiac hops in this beer? I could envision enjoying this sort of beer as long as the brewer was judicious in their use of hops for this beer.

I attended a German Beer Festival in Philly and I drank a Pilsner brewed by Yards which featured the non-noble hop of Loral. I enjoyed this beer since they were judicious in using Loral in brewing this beer. I could tell there was something 'different' in this beer as regards hopping but since the hop aroma/flavor was subtle I thought it worked well in this beer.

    Cheers!

It’s not over hopped, it’s certainly not a PA, 4.7 abv. It’s a bit sharp up front, but most Pils are, but in finishes like Trauger. I’m drinking thinking it’s familiar , and then it popped into my head, Trauger is the only beer I can remember that is dry and clean like this. I’d love to see this done with Citra, with Chinook, etc. Just interesting twists on an old fav. Oh and I get the bitter some fruit, but restrained, nothing like cat pissy etc, but I only know it’s Mosaic because they say so.

In my experiences I think I like pilsners made with a careful judicious use of modern hops a lot more than I like beers that only use Noble hops but throw them in excessively work dry hopping and all.

On the Basic Brewing podcast they just did a sampler testing out Saaz hops and noted a strawberry flavor to it.
I think that lines up what I've been noticing in a lot of the American Pilsners that I know are at least mostly straight Tettnang or Saaz (because they're really the same hops).
I get a tangy fruity flavor when these hops are overloaded in the late additions. It really kills the drinkability for me. The flavor just sits on my tongue. Then I've gotten grassiness from many beers dry hopped with the Noble hops.

I've found my bigger problem with craft Pilsners is the thinking to use all the modern hopping methods with the old hops. I prefer modern hops blending in with the pilsner malts.
