Okay, perhaps I am turning into a Curmudgeon... So, let me ask this neutrally.

For those of us not completely disenchanted by the state of trading currently, how does everyone feel about the ever-growing phenomenon of people posting an ISO for a large bottle (whale-ish), but without a real trade offer--just a list of 20 or so random bottles? No points, no ratios, nothing but a list...

Since I asked, I will throw out my personal thoughts as well.

This is not a trade offer. It places the onus on the person with the target bottle to make an offer, and in many cases when this is done the OP already had an idea of what was fair to them. I feel like it is growing, as the first three offers in Limited have this in them, and besides being annoying AF, it seems to run against the spirit of trading here and bumps close to the auction posts.

Then again, maybe others really like it, and I am simply in the minority. Please, discuss among yourselves.

In total agreement with you. If someone proposes a trade where their side is way over on $4$, I may accept the offer but I’ll try and throw in some solid extras to help even it out. However, I’m not going to propose a trade asking someone to go way over $4$ on their end. Therefore, in these types of posts I simply won’t respond. They’re garbage.

I actually prefer offer “lists”, but only those that say pick 2 or pick 4 etc. Gives me an opportunity to pick and choose from the list without having to haggle or go back and forth about values that I never seem to get right anyway.

At one time those type of trade offers were routinely deleted by the moderators, as they were perceived to be thinly disguised auctions, which were prohibited. However, several years ago the ban on auctions was lifted, and so here we are.

I don't mind it personally. If someone is gunning for a whale, and doesn't have that huge anchor how else are they supposed to get to try the beer they want. No one is forcing anyone to accept those trades. I'm even vaguer in some of mine, where i'll just put a brewery in. I have landed dozens of quality bottles $4$ for Tree House and Trillium hops.

Ive been on the other side of it as well, and had the ask and looked through those threads and got 5 or 6 "small fish" that I drank through the weekend. For a beer I was storing for a "special day" that someone else put a premium on.

Plus those threads give me something to scroll through when i'm killing time at work.

I never respond to those threads anymore. Ends up being a waste of time 90%+. You come up with something based on their list, and the other party starts to try and ‘strip you’ for your bottle.

So goes back to exactly what OP said, these people already know what they’re willing to give for their ISO, but they are out for click bait and ‘win’.

Small list with X amount of pluses offered? That’s fine. People just posting a list of bottles and nothing else... pass.

Completely agree. But, that is more of a ratio offer. I can dig that. I am talking about just a straight list of beer under a “FT:” with no other direction.

I find it more annoying when someone is ISO a big whale and posts and oddly specific combination of bottles. Seems like odds are low that someone would want that specific combo.

A list gives the whale owner an opportunity to tell me what it would take to land their bottle. The whale owner has all the power, and if they want to ask for more than I’m willing to give, that’s fine... although it has never happened. By definition the whale (KBBS, BBT, etc) is an extremely limited beer, so the odds having multiple people interested are essentially zero... so I don't understand how someone could consider this style of post an auction. By the time you find someone who has that limited bottle, and is interested in trading it for the beer I have in return, you pretty much say yes to whatever they want, or you decide you will never obtain that whale. If I have a list and say "pick 4", but the whale owner requires 5, I might scare them away. I think ratios should be negotiated, not dictated.

All that being said, the absolute worst thing is someone ISO a huge whale, and offering to only trade a bunch of crap that no one wants. Oddly enough I saw a trade post last night that I thought was going to be that exact thing and as I get down the list, some real gems capable of landing his ISO pop out, but I nearly passed on the post entirely. Posters need to highlight their best bottles in that situation.

I get douchechills seeing a beer called a whale.

I too hate when people correctly reference classic literature. It’s almost as bad as when someone uses the term “douchechills.”
