Just realized this is beer number 1900, decided to open something a little special. @thebeers gave me a can a few months ago and decided based on ratings it’s right for this review, Tree House All That Is And All That Will Ever Be. Have to give a lot of respect this beer not only for being an amazing milk stout, but also for referencing the great Carl Sagan. Love the fact that the bottom says “Pale Blue Dot”, honestly my favorite quote, I actually played it for my students at the being of last school year.

Big thanks to thebeers for this
16 oz can, dated 12/21/18, poured into a teku

A- Black with a two finger mocha head.

S- Rich chocolate and coffee, caramel malts, some roasted malts. Huge nose for only 6.5%.

T- Chocolate, caramel, coffee, some roasted malts, touch of lactose.

M- Smooth, medium to full body.

O- Truly an impressive milk stout. Tastes big like an imperial stout, but only 6.5% ABV. Definitely worth seeking out.

Great start to the best thread on BA @cjgiant! My favorite location to imbibe is the wilderness, sipping brews by the campfire, on the summit of a mountain taking in the views, or under the stars is definitely some of the most relaxing and enjoyable time I spend on this earth.

It's been awhile since I've participated, life has been hectic and not in a good lots of time in the wilderness type way. My contribution today is Double Dobis from Cellarmaker. Single-hop Citra DIPA clocking in at 8.5%

1 day old growler poured into a stemless wine glass.

L: Pours bronze orange with less than 1/2 finger of medium density white head that dissipates fairly quickly, but still leaves sporadic sticky spotty lacing.

S: Tropical and dynamic, lots of passion fruit and mango. Loved the nose!

T: Very good, but not quite on the same level as the nose. More citrus (lime) and berry aspects than on the nose. Finishes with mild bitterness and slight acidity, acidity lingers on the palate.

F: Medium bodied with medium-high carbonation, full on the tongue with slight tingling of acidity from carbonation, silky finish.

O: An outstanding Citra single-hop DIPA. Scary easy drinking for 8.5%, and very delicious for my palate and preferences. It's so interesting to see how different the emphasis flavors and aroma attributes can be between brewers for the same hop. I find this Citra single-hop DIPA far more approachable than Fieldwork's King Citra, but I like them immensely for different reasons.

New Historical Lager Sunday (Week 747)
Greetings again fellow NBSers from on the ridge in Mid Hud Val, NY, as a showery day that promises flushes of shrooms continues. Happy Fathers Day to all the other fathers out there!

This next review is subject to change, I feel like I am not tasting this as well as I could, so will get a firmer read before adding review to data base
    [IMG]
Some husky grain notes joined by grassy hops in a full strength aroma, with hint of lemon, and touch of spice. As it warms what must be corn aroma comes in.

Taste is a nice mix of grainy sweet, some bready notes, notes I believe are corn are here too. The sweet is restrained, well balanced with the grassy hop notes, and I get some tart yeast just at the point spicy hops take over and carry a bit of lemon to close this baby out dry. All flavors play very well together.

First sips of this tasted watery, but that impression faded immediately and it now is drinking super refreshing, soft, nicely carb.'ed, with a hoppy finish that stays clean.

Very good beer, def. different than your usual fare, and that itself is a point in favor. I recommend this beer for sure.

Hope you also have a Great American Beer in your glass. Cheers!

    Hey what's going on!?

Time for a new brew for Sunday, always love reviewing new beers!

Things is well so let's get thing going. And a great start out of the gate so far!

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass.

Pale amber body color, with a mix of tangerine orange and deep lemon yellow colors. Somewhat opaque but has a nice brass like shine to it, with a matching bit of middle column of carbonation. Head creation is fine and about a finger, but settles to a very nice thin puck and bowled white collar. A very nice looking brew.

Aroma is quite impressive. Good amount of funk and acidity mixing on the nose, touches a little bit of apricot quality but with much more of a yeast flavor punch. Hints real earthy wild tones of fresh soil, hay, and maybe even a touch of cream hinting some sweetness as well.

Palate is really spectacular. The beer opens up full force with a first rush of tangy sour and sweet tangerine like orange. A real rich peppery blend of peppercorn and even almost gose like salt brine hits with big orange stone fruit character of juiced peach and apricot all over. Very herbal spiced finish, hints of sage and there's that really creamy texture and quality as well on the palate that is just so well done.

    Excellent creation from Deschutes.

A- sweet grapefruit with some malt and floral notes.
T - grapefruit, sweet bready malt with a mild piney finish. Hints of other citrus.
F- soft with medium carbonation and light alcohol.
O- great beer and easy to drink. Balance leans towards the sweet side.

Sounds like a great pool-side beer...still waiting to see where @cavedave winds up in his assessment. But I'd buy it based on your assessment alone if it saw distro here. My kind of summer beer for sure.

Ok, I am drinking beer outside right now. Along with a throng of other people at Hardywood’s West Creek location. This place is rather large, as was (in our opinion) their original location. This one is definitely more rural, with Virginia woods surrounding the place.

They have a guitar duo playing music inside, and they have games to distract the kids, of which there are fairly many today. There is outside seating but many have brought their own lawn/camping chairs to spread out in the grass and trees to enjoy their beverages.

My first beverage choice is Hardywood’s Margarita Sour, a Berliner Weiss base with I assume some additions to give it a margarita flavor (lime would be obvious guess):

The GF is having Tropication - an American IPA that has a decent toasty malt backbone with sweetness up front but a nice woodsy to earthy hop bitterness in back.

My beer definitely looks the part, a muddled lemonade with a shot of reposado tequila. Unfortunately, it might have less froth than a margarita, though it’s lack of head isn’t abnormal to American versions of the style.

The nose is surprisingly heavy on malt and wheat, with a little tart citrus pulp mixed in. It doesn’t seem like it will be too tart, and the mix is orange, lime, and grapefruit.

The flavor profile is similar to the Berliner @Roguer had in the sense that the beer part of this, well... beer, is not lost. A wheat malt joins the more obvious lime citrus in a beer that is sour, but in a juicy fashion more than a purely acidic one. This leads to a decent feel, light and tart but not challenging.

By the end I was getting the margarita vibe in the aftertaste, but not as much in each sip. Each sip brought me back to beer. I am of mixed mind, here, because a beer should be a beer, and this success fairly well. But how much like another drink should such a target be? This one seemed stuck a bit between the alternatives in a way I couldn’t find fault with, but also didn’t think worked for me as much as I’d hoped.

I’d be curious if they’d gone with a Gose (like many breweries have) for a margarita beer to add that salted rim aspect. And then tequila barrel-aged it.

Speaking of, I do have Mas Agave back at the hotel, @ovaltine

Good afternoon (well, not for me quite yet) and happy New Building Blocks Sunday, BAs. Happy fathers day to all who fit the bill. I had a nice day planned; hike and a stop at Baerlic's Super Secret Beer, Brats 'n' Bourbon Shots Fathers Day bash, but unfortunately Thing #2's ailments took a turn for the worse. Now it's laundry and gardening again. All well. At least the Frau picked up a couple of new beers for me to try!

    Mikkeller San Diego
    Building Blocks
    - Keller Style Pilsner

Building Blocks is about as perfect looking as you'd hope for in a Keller Pils. Beautiful bright golden color with the slightest bit of unfiltered influenced clarity, and the frothiest meringue of a cap above. Bubbles lazily dance in unison to support this foam with ease, as it stays abundant and plasters the glass from sip to sip.

Classic notes of bread crusts and freshly cracked black pepper are met with sun dried summer grass and just a drop of honey.

The flavor is surprisingly watered down from what the aroma would indicate. Light multi grain crackers are overwhelmed by the earthy soil and bittered grasses. Still quite peppery, but a faint suggestion of pear skin esters comes through deep in the finish.

Remarkably dry is the first thing noticed. Raw, dirty, and bitter. Almost a complete lack of balance, but somehow still manages to work. Despite the dryness, it leaves some slick feel on the lips with an overall dirtiness to it. Dirty. Dirty, dirty, dirty.

Appearance has it going on. Aroma is promising. After that, it's still an enjoyable brew but falls on its face a bit. I'm good with one.

After my official review, I gave Building Blocks a rating of 3.99 with an rDev of -0.7%.

    Cheers!

Firestone Walker Napa Parabola, 11.3% ABV. Pours black with a slight tan head. Nose is roast malt, grapes and bourbon. Taste follows, plus a hint of chocolate, prevailing flavors are oak and roast malt which largely overshadowing the wine, with a highly bitter close. Decent mouthfeel, overall outstanding. I just had regular Parabola yesterday and I am rating this lower. Good, but to me the bitterness detracts.

Hazy, juicy looking body with a one-finger thick head, frothy and white. Grapefruit, orange and pineapple aroma. Nice and balanced taste of biscuit and citrus fruit; grapefruit; mildly tart and bitter. Heavy body; a bit watery yet relatively dry overall.

This is a nice IPA, definitely exhibiting an opaque haziness to the body with a fair head. Its strong point is the flavor blend, balanced and fairly complex without overdoing either the hop bitterness and citrus elements or its malt base. The beer won't push any boundaries at any level, but should satisfy any IPA lover no matter your preferred styling.

I was actually listening to the latest 'The Thomas Jefferson Hour' broadcast on a local NPR station. This beer made for a fine supplement to things...

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there! I'm enjoying mine by doing what I love best- spending it in the kitchen preparing a couple of fave dishes. Right now I'm about to take a veal breast that's just spent a few hours in the smoker, and let it slowly cook in the crock pot for the rest of the afternoon. Then we'll have some tender and tasty 'pulled veal' with tamarind/chipotle glaze, served alongside some kickin' seafood and sausage gumbo. (@Premo88 , I couldn't help but think of you while putting together the menu. Wish you were here to partake ).

My new beer today was a happy find earlier in the week:

Dayum, man! This is exactly what I was hoping for- intensely floral and spicy, backed by a good dose of barnyard funk, straw and bread crust, and tempered with just enough oak and tannins. It's crisp and lively still, and assembled with a deft enough hand that none of these strong elements are allowed to get too obnoxious. Going down way too easily for a $20 bottle, too . Very solid A (4.5), and will definitely buy again. Soon!

I basically made a snap judgement with that one today, but FWIW, your review doesn't seem off to me at all. I see that you made a new entry for this beer. I feel like these entries can benefit from having the year in the BA name since it seems like they will be entirely different beers each year.

Happy dad day to fathers, sons and daughters. I realize when opening this Thank You beer that it would have been fitting if one of my three boys bought this for me today, but I bought it yesterday for myself (of course). No complaints with the kids, they're good and they do buy me beer now and then.

A fantastic frothy head of multi sized bubbles greets you and hangs around as glass lacing until the end. This bright white head tops a hazy orange/gold body with not a hint of floaties or sediment.
Stick your head in the glass for a lemon zested apricot experience for your olfactory system.
But don't think your tongue gets short-sh-rifted here. It can enjoy some of that lemon/apricot, then be whipped abruptly with hoppy bitter goodness fading slowly to mild malt. But wait there's more... the mouthfeel is heavier than expected. Surprise. One would think heavier is not good with this style, but it seems right on this beer.
Ad lingo aside I did enjoy this beer. Hopefully next year's Thank You will meet or exceed this one.
