Good morning, NBS! This week, on top of the everlasting request for descriptive reports of the new beer in your glass, we will continuing with some hard-hitting journalistic questions for you willing NBS participants. Today you can ponder the next two questions in the list, if you are so inclined: when and how.

When do you choose to drink beer? Are you a person who limits yourself to beer only on your weekends, or are you more of a whenever-the-mood-strikes drinker? Can you enjoy a beer early in the day, or is noon a threshold before which you won’t cross?

For the how, we'll go with a question of the vessel(s) you choose. Do you prefer “proper” glassware? Or might you be a person who enjoys every beer out of your favorite glass, regardless of beer style? Or maybe the vessel is truly just a means to an end for you.

For this thread, we certainly hope one of the answers to "when" is, "on Sunday." Specifically we hope that you saved a new-to-you beer to join in the fun today. Next, we hope you choose a glass that allows you (and perhaps us) to see it. That way you can report the appearance along with the feel, smell, and taste. Try not to leave out any interesting facts, subjective and objective, regardless of whether the beer is newsworthy or whether its story should be buried.

Who wants to start us off on the front page?

Morning All! Fighting an infection on my hip that is giving me a hard time, so no woods walking for me today. What better way to stay home and treat it than with a new beer in the other hand? Will be back to join y'all in a bit. Meanwhile I will ponder the questions of the day. See ya then!

Happy Sixpoint Me the Way to New Beer Sunday (Week 749)!

Good news! I'm here! Shouting that as I ascended the stairs of the now-defunct Nodding Head in PHL would send owner Curt Decker scrambling for his office. If it does it to yinz on here, my apologies.

I had to sit out last week, having recently had a prostatectomy to remove my CANcerous prostate (Stage 1) & it was in-between my initial discharge & my follow-up to have the catheter removed. Mr. Foley is gone & I am back in the saddle again (sort of). In more irony, the CAN Man who had CANcer now has mild inCANtinence! 8=( I am limited in my ability to leave Chez Woody as a result, but fortunately, I have plenty of beer to get me through.

In a related note, has anyone else seen the thread started by the fellow with an upcoming amputation? He is looking for suggestions on themed-beers to celebrate his surgery. He has hit upon Heavy Seas' Peg Leg, but I would caution him that, as with me & CANcer, the Beer Gods have a sense of humor that may not be to his liking.

I like the question of "when" as it relates to my beer drinking. I prefer days ending in "Y (yankee)" & at any moment when the sun is shining somewhere on Planet Earth. As to glassware, I have been reduced to a mere suppliCANt at beer fests at times. Usually, it is due to having broken or lost my glass. I simply present my cupped, outstretched hands for a sample! Glassware? Who needs glassware?!?

I have always dug the Slimline CAN CANcept since beer "borrowed" it from Red Bull. It was supposed to be the CANning wave of the future, but only Sixpoint really embraced it. 8=(

Without further ado, my first of the day:

No beer yet although I have several to crack open within a few hours (e.g., Bluebird Bitter, Maine Beer Co.'s Mean Uncle Tom Aged on Vanilla Beans, TRVE Beatin' the Odds). But I can delve into this week's theme...

Proper beer glass? For me, the proper beer glass is a shaker pint without any logo on it (although a logo on the glass is not a deal killer). For whatever style of beer. Although I can appreciate what different glassware designs might offer to the beer experience, I can't say I've really noticed anything significantly different from those times I'm served beer in such glasses. Besides, I don't have the space to store a whole menagerie of arcane glass styles. Clean, simple, functional. That's the appeal of the shaker pint glass to me.

As for drinking time, anytime works for me. The key is self-moderation and what I've got planned to do in the near future. A beer at 3, 4 or 5 in the morning is fine although that seldom happens. Most of the time, my beer drinking starts late morning to early afternoon and continues until it's time to quit. The days of absolutely no beer are few and far between, but days of only one or two aren't too uncommon. In fact, my last two evenings entailed only two beers each evening. Sometimes more beer, an always appealing idea, just isn't in the cards. A couple of nice tall, cool tumblers of ice water is just more appealing.

I've plan to spend some quality time in the 'Fortress of Solitude' today, catching up on some internet radio programs ('Classical Guitar Alive!' and 'The Thomas Jefferson Hour') and work are more rifle handloads (brass prep). And beer. Gotta have beer while ensconced within the hallowed walls of the 'Fortress'...

Thomas Hardy’s Ale - The Historical - 2018, Scotch Whisky Barrel Aged

The 2017 edition of this beer was aged in Tennesse [sic] whiskey barrels. Today’s beer partially resembles that one.

First off, this is a skimpy 8.45oz bottle. The extremely high price of the bottle means that this beer was close to $2 per oz... that’s probably the highest price per oz I ever paid for bottled beer for home consumption. It’s ridiculous (just like me). It makes the very expensive JW Lee’s Harvest look like a bargain (and I certainly like that beer better).

The beer is a gorgeous red/chestnut color. It’s practically still. The alcohol jumps out at you, but it’s smooth enough to not be off-putting. Body is thinner than expected. Tastes of oak, brandy, berries, and a touch of caramel.

The best thing about this beer is the color (the pic doesn’t do it justice) and the worst thing is the price. It’s a decadent beer.

Poured into a 13 oz Foam Tulip glass canned on 6/26/19 not sure of the ABV but seems around 8% and drinks way easier than that. Pours like a glass of pineapple oj with a finger of sticky white head that leaves thick streaks of lace with excellent retention. 4.75

Smell is guava, papaya, pineapple, tangerine, and just a hint of grapefruit rind. 4.75

Taste follows juicy as it gets guava, papaya, pineapple, tangerine, and very mild grapefruit this is really tasty. 4.75

Mouthfeel is bigger than average, soft gentle carbonation, sticky but not dry, and it is crazy drinkable but I can not tell you what the ABV is. 4.75

Overall this is just an amazing NEDIPA that I would say could hold its own with all the greats around the country. Impressive....4.75[IMG]

I’m a fan of the smaller bottle for a high abv beer. But it seems like they still priced this as if it was a 12 ounce bottle? $2 per ounce must be on the upper end of things right now. Utopia of course is higher, but can’t think of anything else that has surpassed the $2 threshold (not counting secondary prices).

New Beer Sunday: American Pale Wheat Ale

Mornin’ NBSers with an alert for folks looking for something light, refreshing and drinkable during the heat of the day. Also thanks to @cjgiant for this morning’s start.

Today’s weather is expected to be a mix of sunny and cloudy with the highs in the mid 80s. This will be a nice change from several days of 90s temperatures with occasional showers, sometimes quit heavy.

Drinking habits? Well, I mostly drink about 5-6 beers a week and mostly in the evening after dinner (except on Sunday when I'll be trying new beers). I've been focused on beer for the last few years and so seldom have wine or spirits anymore.

This morning’s new beer is brewed for summer drinking and is from Yards in Philly. Called Summer Crush it is a new beer for this brewery as well as for me.

My review, almost finished, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/user/beers/?ba=drtth

Designed to be a summer refresher, the aromas/flavors of this Wheat beer are not intense but rather are gently full of lime zest, orange zest, a bit of wheat, some light tartness, a touch of sweetness and just a bit of earthy bitterness towards the end. There’s also seems to be a bit of fruity esters from the yeast. The mouthfeel is light and smooth. I'd say this beer achieves it’s goal of being a refreshing summer thirst quencher. As such I’d say it’s drinkable, fairly enjoyable and I’d be happy to have more than one on a hot summer afternoon. (Say a day like today is going to be.)

    Cheers, all!

    in price & ABV
    The review:
16oz can stamped 02/11/24 (best before?) poured into a snifter at fridge temp 12.5% ABV. The beer pours mostly bright medium amber in color with orange/red highlights and khaki colored head. The head recedes to a thin cap and leaves a little lacing. The aroma is sweet brown sugar & caramel with just a trace of bourbon and oak. The taste is more semisweet caramel, Maris Otter malt and lighter amounts of earthy hops, oak barrel, vanilla and bourbon. The finish is mostly dry with low to medium bitterness and a touch of alcohol heat. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. Overall, very good. Never cloying, with real English malt and the barrel is not overdone. I'm not sure how long this one sat in the cooler at the store, but it's a fall or winter release & could have more barrel influence when fresh.

I love English barleywines, but don't love ATG. I have passed on this for years, but finally bit the bullet at $9/single. The barrel is so subtle it neither adds nor detracts from an excellent base. That skews the value to unfavorable. I wish they would sell the base beer at a reasonable cost (and date it!). You can vintage date a barleywine, but not Citra Ass Down?

In reply to @cjgiant's opening question, the when for a married father of two teenagers who works a 12 hour swingshift, is whenever opportunity presents & I don't have to drive. I love a simple AAL in the afternoon or a barleywine at 8am.

The how is more involved. I created my account here almost 5 years ago. I had just started to pair glassware with beer. Thanks to @Lingenbrau & the GOTD, my glassware collection exploded to 120 plus over the next few years. I have some go to's for certain styles, but look the rotate some of my obscure glasses through as well.

This post has rambled on enough. Cheers all and enjoy the new beer in your glass today!

    Rum Barrel Coconut Porter...
Black-bodied beer with translucent brown edges, produced a fairly brief tan head of foam in a nonic pint... Aromas of chocolate and rum most apparent on the nose... On the sip, molasses, chocolate, chewy coconut, rummy pineapple, and a bit of coffee char on the finish, although the drying effect is minimal... Medium-weight, smooth, some sticky molasses, some dry wood... Delivers as advertised, though I don't know if a rum barrel-aged porter is a go-to kinda beer, it certainly was enjoyable enough... 12.2% abv...

    Cheers...

I don't drink a lot of beers at once but prefer to sip and savor the flavor, aroma, appearance of a beer at a time. Last year I rated over 300 beers and I felt that was too many. I have cut back and am focusing on quality beers ( rated 4.0 or higher on BA) and Whalez.

Beer Glasses? I am as serious about my beer glasses as I am my beer. I was born in Germany while my folks were stationed there. Beer was very prevalent ( well, duh!). I inherited a tremendous collection of German bier glasses. I always try to match my beer to the proper glass.

My New Beer Sunday beer is Oude Geuze by Drie Fontinien Armand & Gaston. Not a typical beer style for me.

Caged and corked bottle poured into a tulip glass

Solid two finger off white dense creamy fluffy foam cap, torrents and waves of strong carbonation on the pour with numerous active streams, settles to a dense layer with great retention, some lacings over a hazy golden orange. Exceptional

Aroma is tart, crisp apples, slightly lemon

Taste is tart crisp apples, lemon citrus tang

Tartness lingers firmly in the middle of the tongue, almost tongue curling from the tartness, low sudsing

Good beer, again, not my go to style but I would definitely recommend and try this one again

    Good morning lurkers, learners, lamenters
of bad beer and lauders of good beer.

I’ve got a yellow curry chicken dish in the crock pot and a ton of debris to clean up from yesterday’s flash thunderstorm.

But first, a 2019 Firestone Walker Napa Parabola in my glass.

Look: The beer pours black and opaque with some dark brown around the edges when held to the light. A beige head that settles down to a thin layer across the top of the beer, with a lot of lacing along the glass. The lacing eventually disappears as I start to drink the beer. No visible carbonation. An inviting Imperial Stout.

Smell: Dark chocolate, milk chocolate and cocoa. Heavy on these qualities. Leather, dark cherries, raisins, black pepper. The ABV is noticeable as with Parabola.

Taste: Up front medium milk chocolate sweetness, with dried, dark fruit including raisins and figs. There is a spiciness mid palate with cinnamon and black pepper. Followed by more bitter cocoa and dark chocolate and where I think the wine barrel begins to influence the beer. Mid and back palate. The wine barrel takes the base beer which is sweet wire to wire and bitters and dries it out a bit. A woody bitterness and dry quality on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Parabola. Thick feel with low carbonation. Nicely coats the palate with some sticky sweetness on the lips.

Overall: An excellent addition to the Parabola family. As I’ve found with others (except the scotch which was an unwanted smack in the face with Islay single malt) the treatment is very well integrated. This would make a great food beer. Better than Parabola because of the dry and bitter finish, which could nicely withstand some sweet BBQ or a rich Ribeye steak.

An excellent job taking the Imperial Stout and creating an entirely different drinking experience while making is equally, if not more, enjoyable. A world class stout and my favorite Parabola.

Well, 02/11/24 better not be the canned on date. When brewers go past 2 years for a best by date, they’ll likely use years in multiples of 5 (I’ve never heard of a brewer doing it differently). So, a safe bet is that your beer was canned this February since I don’t think they were canning this beer in 2014.
