Hey buddy! The glass is a Sam Adams Perfect Pint (“SAPP”). Cheers!

New Beer Sunday: American Imperial IPA

Afternoon NBSers with a heads up for fans of lots and lots of citric zest and bitterness in a beer.

My preferred glass for reviewing is the Duvel glass because it helps highlight the aromas that are so important to the flavors we experience.

This afternoon’s new beer is the Crooked Stave Do You Even Zest.

My review, in progress, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/25191/274985/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors of this beer are mostly about citric zest. (No surmise given the name of the beer.) There’s orange zest, lemon zest against a background of some light tropical fruit and toasted malt way in the background. The finish is fairly long and mostly about the bitterness from the citric zest (orange and lemon) which dominate the flavors as the bitterness slowly fades away in the long dry ending. Drinkable and enjoyable if you are in the mood for zesty bitterness. That said for me it would be a “once in a while” beer when I’m in the mood for lots of citric zest so I’d have no interest in having two in a row or even more than 1-2 per week.

    Cheers, all!

Northcoast le merle Belgian farmhouse ale
    ...very clear light amber
...medium light carbonation and about the same for the body
...aroma is malt, sugary syrup, bubblegum, floral earthy
..taste has a sharp bitterness that's matched by a syrupy malty sugary sweetness. A little floral earthy taste as well
..overall it's well made, tastes ok, but a little to syrupy for me[IMG]

    Coniston -- Bluebird Bitter

    3.9/5 rDev +1.3%
    look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Dark amber body, crystal clear; thin yet rich and creamy head. Crisp and delicate malt sweetness on the nose; light caramel; some toastiness to the grain. Warm, grainy taste; dull sweetness; suggestion of honey; strong yet balanced hop bitterness. Medium body; nice residual sugar presence; crisp with a fairly dry quality overall.

This beer delivers a very fine malt-forward experience, doing an excellent job of balancing toasted grain and hop bitterness flavors throughout the taste. I can't say I picked up on the label's descriptions of "soft fruitiness with a faint hint of geranium", but it certainly brings a nice flavorful nuttiness and bitterness to the palate. And at only 4.2% ABV, this certainly could be something to enjoy throughout the day.

Next up: if I've done a pastry stout, I suppose I should do a milkshake IPA, right? Double Apricot Double Milkshake by Untitled Art, a 9% ABV fruited milkshake DIPA, and a rare non-collab by these folk around these parts.

Probably my quickest review today: sour fruited vanilla DIPA. Clear enough?

In all seriousness, all the words I could add to the above would only supplement, but not clarify, my thoughts. I'm not well versed in milkshake IPAs, so I can't do much to compare or contrast it with the style, but to me it leans toward the fruited sour IPA category, with an amazingly creamy and thick mouthfeel.

    Really enjoyable brew.

I've really been impressed with TRVE's mixed culture beers (and I'm partial to the name, naturally). Civil Society produces maybe the best NE-style IPAs in Florida, and some solid flavored porters as well, but they're above average at best. Glad to hear that this ticks all the boxes!

Tuned-In is a DIPA collaborator from Sand City and Burnished Brewing.
The murky orange can pour hosts a thin foam cap and a rich mango nose. The flavor brings waves of pineapple and guava. The hop bitterness is low to moderate. The mouthfeel is full and vey smooth. There is no hint of the high abv. This is an enjoyable DIPA.

Good afternoon everyone and happy New Beechwood Sunday, BAs. A little 50th Annual North Portland Sunday 9 mile bike ride with the family coming up has me parched just thinking about it. Luckily, I have just the right thirst quenching beer from an always dependable local source.

But first, to answer @cjgiant 's questions: A), I am openly a beer drinker. Usually 2-3 a night, 2-300 on the weekends, whenever, wherever. And 2), It's no secret I'm a glassware junkie (see below) and always look for an excuse to purchase another. But I'm not entirely pretentious. I'll drink out of any vessel and enjoy straight from the can pretty regularly. But for some reason I hate drinking straight out of a bottle.

    Baerlic-
    Baerweiser
    - 5th Anniversary Pre Prohibition Style Beechwood Aged Lager

Baerweiser looks brilliant, just as the classic it's modeled after. Straw golden, polished, inviting, clean. Bubbles swarm from within to support a picture perfect rocky and foamy bone white head. Every fraction of descent leaves a sheet of lacing behind. (4.5)

It smells like the beach. It smells like a campfire. It smells like a block party. It smells like comfort, familiarity, friends, and fun. Wet sand, damp wood, crushed grains, a drizzle of honey, dried grass, even drier corn husks. It smells like summer. (4.25)

The flavor is exactly what you would expect. Dried and crushed grains, cooked rice, a sprinkle of wildflowers, and a dollop of classic honey. That signature "beechwood" acts as the tortilla to the burrito, the baguette to the sandwich, the… you get the picture. Light, but noticed throughout each sip. (4.0)

Crisp, bubbly, sharp, smooth, easy drinking. A touch of sweet complimented by a bitter dry finish that doesn't require much searching. A slightly dirty residue demands a little lip smacking between sips. (4.0)

An ode to The King of Beers. An interesting choice for a 5th Anniversary avenue, but perfect for the upcoming warm summer days. Slightly less "cold" or crisp feeling than the American classic, but a damn fine enjoyable beer this is. Baerlic continues to knock them out of the park. (4.0)

After my official review, I gave Baerweiser a rating of 4.09

Cheers, to the King of Baers.

    Good Afternoon, BA!

I’m enjoying the last can from a great box of beers sent to me by @Buck89

    Thank you, my good man!

Southern Grist - Double Fruited Mashmallow Passion Fruit Pineapple Hill

Look: The beer pours a beautiful, golden yellow color that is translucent, and hazy. Some amber as well. There is some sediment floating around and some carbonation streaming up the from the bottom. The big, white head that formed upon pouring completely disappeared and I am left with no lacing. An enticing, and fruity looking beer on his 85 degree day here in NJ.

Nose: This beer is dripping with tropical fruit aromas. Tons of passion fruit and pineapple, driven by the former. I don’t know if this beer is brewed with wheat, but I’m getting a nice crackery, grainy aroma. It smells like one of those Tropicana tropical fruit juices you buy at the grocery store. Some lemon juice acidity.

Taste: The pineapple and passion sweetness is up front, perhaps with some added sugar from the mashmallow and lactose, but not overdone at all. It quickly shifts to a gentle acidity and tartness that lingers on the palate as lemon juice and white vinegar.

Feel: Low to medium level of carbonation.

Overall: A great fruited sour beer on a hot summer day and pretty easy drinking at 5.6%. Nothing crazy or over the top. Clean, no off flavors you get sometimes from kettle sours (assuming this is). Good all around great and nailing the fruit.

    Thank you, John!

Little later start for me today. As to the when and how? I almost exclusively drink from a glass although I'm not particular about matching styles. I drink most days. During the work week I'll have a beer when I get home from work as part of my decompressing from the stress. When I don't have to work the next day, I'll have 2 sometimes 3 depending on how early I start. I don't drink before 11 am. This has more to do with I'm more interested in consuming caffeine at that time of day. It also helps keep the amount of beer I consume each day in check.

I picked up the Sixpoint jammer mixed pack last week, so I'll be reviewing a few of the ones I haven't had before. I'm gonna start with the one that I think I'll like the least and work my way up from there.

L- The beer pours a hazy light amber with a 1 1/2 finger white head. The head recedes quickly leaving no lacing behind.
S- The nose is grapefruit up front with some wheat mustiness.
T- As expected the grapefruit is the strongest flavor present. It's a good level and gives the beer a naturally drying finish. There is just bit of salinity in the finish. Any tangerine added is lost and maybe serves to tone down the grapefruit bitterness.
F- Mouthfeel over all is light. The finish is dry. Carbonation is medium on the pour, but becomes lighter as it sits.
O-This is a really nice hot weather beer. It's light and dry and repeatable. I'm not the biggest grapefruit fan, but this was well done. If you like grapefruit you'll appreciate this one.

    Hokkaido white peach ale
    ..cloudy white peach color
..around a medium body with just below average carbonation
.. aroma is very distinct and strong, fresh white peaches, peach juice, white grapes, some malt and earthiness
..taste is sweet peach juice far from overly syrupy. White peaches, grapes, malt and a floral earthiness
..didn't find much wrong with this for a fruit beer it was excellent. The peach flavor was obvious, over and not artificial, sweet but not too syrupy [IMG]

Moving right along here. Next one is again from @strohme2 . This is something I didn’t know I wanted until I had it. It’s Presque ale from Blackrocks brewing.

The appearance is a clear burnt orange color with 2 fingers of orange tinted head which hangs around and produces awesome lacing. The aroma is interesting, there’s a lot going on it seems but nothing is overpowering or strong enough to sniff a mile off. It’s smells of orange with some lemon zest and a bit grassy. Taste follows the nose, but amplified and in a good way. There’s orange, lemon zest, some lime, and a sweet aspect that comes in on the back end. Mouthfeel is a solid medium. Smooth, sticky, and drying. Overall this is a solid pale ale and I could crush these by the pool. Thanks again Justin!

Black body topped with a relatively thin and foamy tan head. Rich aroma of chocolate and cocoa, coffee, and a bare hint of sweet vanilla. Rich flavor with the vanilla more pronounced; milk chocolate and cocoa sweetness; grain husk acridness; decent bitterness counterbalancing the rich sweetness. Heavy body; smooth and silky on the palate; heavy residual sugar heft; mostly sweet mouthfeel overall.

This beer brings some very nice deep chocolate and vanilla combinations to the palate. The mouthfeel just glides over your palate and the taste is very agreeable. Sweet and tasty.

    Hello New Beer Sunday!!!

And hello from beautiful Lake of the Woods Northwest Angle.

I'm still recovering from what happened Friday, and am still quite sore from the endoscope procedure to remove the stuck food in my esophagus. However I am still able to fish, even if I am much slower netting, which I did a whole lot this morning session.

I have a lot of pint glasses, and I am also a fan of the tulip glasses. I also drink later in the day, after work.

However, I am not working today, I am on a fishing vacation. So beer is flowing earlier than usual.

Speaking of beer, and new beer, one that is very fitting for this place.

Lake of the Woods Brewing, Warroad, MN - Blonde Ale. 5% ABV.

There is another Lake of the Woods Brewing in Ontario, Canada, and the one in Warroad, MN is affiliated with them. They just opened a couple of weeks ago and have 4 beers on tap. We brought a growler of the Blonde here to enjoy.

And I am enjoying this on this nice summer day.

It pours a nice clear golden color. The head retention is good. It had a slight hefe aroma, but this isn't a hefe (they have one). The flavor is a sweet malt that is easy to drink.

Much of the different types of glassware's appeal (to me) is how it enhances the visual appeal.

    For example,
Pilsners and other lagers just look good in a Pilsner Glass. The tall, tapered glass enhances the color, carbonation, etc.
Wheat beers just look good in a Weizen Glass. The very tall curved shape enhances the generally hazy appearance and the appearance of the tall white head.
A Guinness just looks great in a Guinness "Gravity" glass.
Dark beers and stouts just look great in the Irish pub pint (sometimes called a tulip).
Pale ales of all varieties look good in the Nonic pint.
Oktoberfest beers look great in the traditional German Maß (even the half liter one).

Visual appeal should not be underrated! (And, face it, if visual appeal was meaningless, no one would pay the price for anything from TeKu or Spiegelau.)
