I'm going to be moving to town of Poughkeepsie, NY next week. Are there any bottle shops of note in the area other than Half Time? Half time is a really nice store, but you end up paying for that polish. I'm looking for hole in the wall gems like Cable in Bardonia.

Also any breweries I should prioritize? I've been to Hudson valley, plan bee, and Mill house. Obercreek is a 5 minute drive from my new house, so I'm pretty excited to check them out.

Suarez? I’m guessing you must have been there - but just mentioning cos it’s about the same distance as HVB, which is on your list as having tried.

Not sure what Mill House is like these days. But I went once, five years ago, and had an excellent experience. Bunch of us took a train up from NYC and rode a huge 125 mile loop through the Catskills- starting and ending in Poughkeepsie. At the end of the ride we went there. Fully booked but we spoke to a guy who worked there, who was into riding - he let us stick our bikes by the tanks, and then we sat at the bar. Great food and solid beer. My good vibes etc may be ridiculously skewed since I was bonking massively and ravenous!

Yep, I've been to both Suarez and Sloop's original location. I'm on the south side of the town right next to Wappinger Falls. HVB is about a 15 min drive whereas Suarez is about an hour. That's still a lot better than the 2 hour drive from my current house so I definitely plan to visit a lot more.

I've been to Mill house once while passing through the city, but I was just getting into craft so I don't think I really appreciated their offerings. From what I remember, it's an awesome brewpub and the perfect spot to end a ride like the one you and your mates had.

    Hey @Xerlic, Wappingers guy here.

As far as shops: I frequent Half Time since they get good distro and let you do singles. But agreed, they tend to be pricy. Other decent shops in the area include Thrifty Beverage in Poughkeepsie and LaGrange, Oasis in Hopewell and Fishkill Beer & Soda. Not quite Cable’s “hole in the wall” status but most are good in a pinch. For instance, I snagged a 4-pack of Grimm Afterimage at Thrifty LaGrange today, while Half Time didn’t have it. They also do singles now (at one point they didn’t). Honorable mention for Beer World (New Windsor), Shamrock (Highland) and Beer King (Middletown) if you’re out by Equilibrium.

If you’re out and about, check the DeCicco’s markets. My work brings me to the Millwood and Brewster locations. Good selection.

For craft beer bars, not too many around. I’ll hit up County Fare or Vinyl Room, both in the Village of Wappingers. Both have a good rotating selection but aren’t afraid to charge you for it. A good amount of the restaurants in the area will carry craft. West Main, for example, in Wappingers is pretty solid. Underground Coffee and Ales in Highland has good food and a good vibe. Also allows cans to go.

As far as breweries: HVB, Equilibrium, Suarez, Plan Bee and Obercreek are the tops in the area, in my opinion. I prefer the Sloop farm up north for the vibe (and proximity to Suarez) as opposed to the new cafeteria style location. Plenty of other places you can get a good beer if you’re not specifically looking to match the Brooklyn haze scene: Two-Way (Beacon) is a good hang, King’s Court (Poughkeepsie) is up and coming, Mill House is pretty well known for food and for me the beer is alright, Blue Collar (Poughkeepsie) is alright, Newburgh Brewing is a cool space with pretty good range and food. Cousins is local to Wappingers and they do a decent dark beer, but never liked their pale ales and I don’t really dig the space personally. Hyde Park Brewing is also better for food than beer, personally.

If you’re open to going for a drive, you can always tag Clemson Brothers onto Equilibrium for some pretty good food and it’s within walking distance. Bacchus, Hudson Ale Works, Westtown, Glenmere, Rushing Duck, Pine Island, Long Lot, Orange County Hops… among others, all across the Hudson, doing good things. South of here, Peekskill, River Outpost, Captain Lawrence, Sing Sing.

    Hope this helps!

@jma1979 did a great reply. I'll just second checking out DeCicco's. The location in Brewster will be closest to you. And they do have a large bar to drink on-site as well as fill growlers/crowlers. While they are certainly not a hole in the wall, they are a great place to check out with a staff that is friendly & informative.

I would skip Blue Collar and Hyde Park, the beer at both places sucks, I feel no necessity to be kind to either of those places, their beer sucks. Otherwise @jma1979 did a nice job. I am on west side of river, so am definitely gonna second Underground Coffee and Ales in Highland for their tap list, and just around the corner is Hudson Ale Works, a solid brewery. In Poughkeepsie just west of the Civic Center is Schatzi's which has a really good tap list and solid food. And even though the brewmasters are my friends and I am biased, let me add to the recommendations to eat and drink at Mill House.

Right on. I knew there had to be some Dutchess county BA'ers hanging around.

@jma1979 Thanks, that's a lot of great info. I guess you're more than willing to go over the Newburgh-Beacon bridge for beer haha.

Thrifty, Oasis, and Fishkill Beer & Soda all sound like shops I'd love to check out. None of them appear to use beermenus, so they flew under the radar for me.

We stopped at County Fare back when we were up in Dutchess almost every week looking at houses, and we were surprised by how much they were charging. It was getting close to NYC pricing. We also checked out Dutchess Biercafe in Fishkill which was pretty good, but also a bit pricey.

Obercreek is the only brewery on your top 5 that I haven't been to, so I'll make sure to check them out. It helps that they're the closest of the 5 to my new house. I've been to many of the breweries that you have mentioned (the Hudson Valley is so great for beer), but there are also a lot that you mentioned I haven't been to. King's Court and Blue Collar I'm already planning to check out sooner rather than later due to proximity.

Thanks again for the tips and also to @mltobin for the DeCicco's mention. I've heard great things about this chain, but have never been to any of their stores.

Edit: Haha, OK I guess I won't be prioritizing Blue Collar at @cavedave's suggestion. Underground Coffee & Ale and Hudson Ale Works are on the shortlist when we make our way to Highland one weekend.

I haven't shopped there in years, but when I owned my business I used to stop at DIA in Beacon, right on 9D, and it was a decent shop. Not great, but decent. No one has mentioned it. Does it suck nowadays? I mean it used to be as good as Oasis as I recall, and Oasis got recommended.

DIA on 9D looks like it's changing hands. Coming up as a Beer World Express on Google Maps. I've never been in the place but drive past it a lot. It might be worth a look now.

Can't believe I forgot about Schatzi's. Definitely check that place out and it's right down the block from Mill House.

I'll also mention Draught Industries in Beacon, up the road from HVB. Solid tap list and food. Space is narrow and can get tight. Also in Beacon is Melzingah Tap House, more food focused but not a bad tap list either.

I'm more than willing to go west for beer! I work in Beacon / Fishkill so it's not too bad for me.

And @cavedave is right. You can skip Blue Collar and Hyde Park. With everything else out there, you're not missing much!

Welcome to the neighborhood! I’m right across the river from you in ulster county minutes from the bridge. There aren’t many bottle shop choices on your side except Half Time which is obnoxiously expensive, but they do get a huge array of beers and you can get a single of just about anything. If you’re up in Hyde park check out park discount beverage, they have a decent selection and nice prices. Times have changed but I did buy nearly a case of Vanilla Rye there when it was out years ago (over a matter of weeks just sitting there).

On the west side of the river I really like K&E in New Paltz, great selection and prices. They have maybe 8-10 lines for growlers as well. Shamrock is right over the bridge and is pricy but has a big selection, I have a love hate relationship with them. Party Beverage in Newburgh is also a favorite, and they are doing singles of most new beers now too. Long time fan of theirs.

Went to draught industries for the first time the other night and loved it. Nice selection particularly on the hoppy side and st least while we were there the vibe was chill and they were playing great old funk records including Curtis mayfield - “if there’s a hell below we’re all gonna go!” Underground coffee and ales in highland is cool, priced liked you’re in the city but the selection is great and the food is always tasty. As mentioned above you can roll in and get a can of focal banger or bissell brothers or Grimm or hill Farmstead on tap etc etc.

In New Paltz bacchus is worth a visit, the current brewmaster is putting out some interesting sour beers with occasional bottle releases, and not the usual kettle sour stuff. Kings court is intriguing and the people are really nice but for me the jury is still out. Obercreek might be a notch up from that but I need to try more from them. Decent hoppy beers, they did a coffee stout which I thought was their best effort (that I’ve been able to try so far).

I could go on and on. Good call earlier on DeCiccos in Brewster. If you haven’t done it and feel like a moderate road trip go out to OEC in Connecticut too, what an amazing spot.

Hey thanks man. I appreciate that. The Rockland beer scene is definitely strong, and the fact that IA is opening up a spot in Beacon will help with some of that homesickness. I hit up Burger Loft and Ambulance this past weekend, and am trying to squeeze in a last trip to Growler and Gill one of these nights.

My parents still live in the area, and they'll be wanting to see their grandson so I'm sure I'll still be following the scene and in the area from time to time.

There are a lot of good tips here, too. Thanks for all the recs, especially the bottle shops on the west side of the river. A buddy of mine in the Newburgh area always spoke highly of Party Beverages, but I've never heard of the other ones that you mentioned.

My wife loves sour beers, and we've been to Bacchus several times. I'm still wrapping my head around driving distances changing, and New Paltz will be a lot closer now. We've never been to OEC since it was never convenient to go, but it'll be 30 min less driving now. It'll be easier to plan a trip with that in mind.

I moved up last Friday and hit up a few spots.

We went to Schatzi's after the closing and that place is great. They had Alien Church on tap which I haven't had in a long long time. Will definitely be going back.

Thrifty Beverage..... Didn't feel that thrifty lol. Do they keep anything in back rooms for regulars? They had Grimm afterimage on their untappd menu but I couldn't find it anywhere. I probably should have asked. Maybe their untappd menu was just out of date.

Unsurprisingly, Mill House cans are everywhere. $10/4 pack for Kold One is a banger of a deal. I'll probably be drinking a bunch of it over the summer.

Obercreek is AWESOME. Really, really good beers there. Tiny, tiny space though so I'd go as much as you can before it gets too cold to drink outside.

Trying to think of places nobody has mentioned.. Crossroads in Athens is a nice spot. Some real good beers there and great food to go with it. Hudson Ale Works is solid. Arrowood Outpost in New Paltz is a must-visit. Very unique space and some absolutely gorgeous farmhouse beers to go with it. Literally around the corner from Bacchus.

Also gonna echo somebody else's mention of Kings Court -- was pretty impressed when I was there a few months ago.

I get the love. That place is great. My wife still talks about the farmhouse ale we had there.

If you hit Deciccos Exit 19 you can also hit Beertime Exit 20,exit 10, right at end then it"s on the left. It's small but has a decent cooler.

I had to ask to find the Afterimage and it was on a random shelf and not in the cooler where I might have expected. There were only 2 cans left after I got mine so it's possible they ran out and never took it off Untapped. But they were helpful and I'm glad I asked. They used to hide Grimm behind the counter and sell one per customer, but I think those days are behind us.

As for "thrifty"... unfortunately, not too many places around here are thrifty on the NYC beer prices...

I was also kind of surprised that there's is a slight markup on singles versus buying a 4 pack. Cable has me so spoiled haha.
