We arrived in Maine a little after 1am today and will be here for the next week. It’s been a year since we moved, and it’s good to be back. Looking forward to seeing old friends and catching up on the small-town gossip. I’ll be seeing my old golfing buddies and will be playing in the Member-Guest tournament, only this time as a guest. Midweek we’ll have a mini family reunion at my sister’s house. I’m trying not to overschedule ourselves because, after all, it is supposed to be a vacation. I will definitely be trying some new beers. Other than Sam Adams we don’t get New England beers in my part of New Mexico.

I expect that one of more of my new beers will make their way to New Beer Sunday. Perhaps you would like to join us. It’s very simple, actually. Just open a new beer, drink it, then tell us about it. Tell us how it looks, how it smells, how it tastes, and how it feels in your mouth, then give your overall impression of the beer. Repeat with other beers as often as you think necessary.

    Enjoy the day!

    Cheers D.

Nice start as always. After about a year there has to be quite some new gossip to catch on. That’s what older folks do here too. Who’s passed away, who’s been ****olded by his wife/hubby and all that stuff. Can’t wait to be that older « get off my lawn » geezer.

Oh and more on topic... it’s quite the mission for me to find a New Beer here for today, I’ll see if I can find something.

Happy What "New" Beers Have We Here Sunday (Week 750)?

My recovery from my prostatectomy surgery CANtinues on. I was pretty much housebound this past week, venturing out on Tuesday & Wednesday only because I had some really pressing errands. My bugaboo is & has been inCANtinence, which is why I warned upCANming amputee-dude to be careful about what he wishes for/jokes about - the Beer Gods have a twisted sense of humor!

My mother, back east from CA, had invited me to stay with her, but I respectfully declined. I had moved out about a decade ago after having enough of her as an absentee landlord + there is NO television over there! 8=O I have been watching (primarily) 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup & Pittsburgh Pirates baseball with the 2019 Tour de France now starting & I CANnot imagine NOT being able to do so.

I am also reading James "Devil Dog" Ellroy's latest novel, "This Storm", having borrowed it from the library during one of my outings.

Speaking of outing, I am not LGBTQ, but I like Broadway show tunes & I really dig colors & décor. I was "outed" by a Navy buddy ~ 4th of July 1990 until everyone realized that my knowledge of color swatches & interior décor had led to a weekend-long (ahem!) orgy with me as the pivot man! My fellow participants were the unattached members of a wedding party whose planning I had been the CANsultant for at the bar that I frequented. He walked in on us looking at carpet swatches, heard me holding forth & stormed out. He was recounting this tale on M morning, characterizing me as "the gayest straight guy that I have ever met" as I stumbled in for quarters, unshaven, unwashed & smelling of musk, having been JUST dropped off on the pier by the ladies, riding in their late-model CANvertible Mustang, much to the quarterdeck watch section's stunned amazement. This took place in Portland, ME, just to bring us all full-circle, eh, doc?

I bought this bottle the night before my surgery at The Brass Rail Deli in Campbelltown, PA, owned by a fellow former Navy Storekeeper (SK) & his wife! I had planned to drink it during Pride Month, but time kind of evaporated on me until now. Without further ado:

Well, THAT was certainly one way to kick off the day! I CAN't promise that the rest of the day ill be as exciting, but I CAN tell you that I get VERY excited about the prospect of a train of aluminum cylinders lined up in front of me!

    Good morning NBS!

I eventually found a new beer to try for this Sunday which is by the way the first rainy day since we arrived here for our vacay.

Can’t say I’m overly excited about this year Tour de France nor I am about the final of the Women’s World Cup which should be won by the US team. Not that they didn’t play well, quite the contrary but I didn’t like much the whole WC and the referees and « VAR » decisions...

    So here’s my new beer:

Lindemans Kriek, and its 375ml of lambic fruit...

Poured into the only beer glass available here, left a three inches white/red foam fading slowly.

On the nose it’s incredibly full of cherries. Quite pleasant and you can feel in advance this is going to be really sweet on the palate...

And on the palate the cherries blow you away! Very strong flavor of cherries and others fruits. Very smooth, low ABV at 3,5% which would make for a fine summer refreshment.

Overall, a pretty fine lambic, in a different style I enjoyed as much Cherry Chouffe and Kasteel Red. I don’t normally really dig lambics like other folks who don’t all like very sweet beers but I recognize a good one when I sip on one...

    Cheers.

Good day New BSers! It's starting out as a eponymous Sunday here in the mist-shrouded paddies of NW PA - weather rumor is we may have up to 72 hours without rain over the next 96 hours - everybody's filling their bath tubs and buying Walmart out of bottled water to prepare for the drought. Doc, thanks for today's start - enjoy your visit home - yinz haven't been gone long enough to see big changes.
    Today's New Breakfast Beer:

Received from @jdell15 in NBS BIF #9. Reviewed 7/7/19. Thanks Jacob!
Can undated other than “2018” on the front of the 12 oz can. Stored at 42 degrees and served at 54 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 62.6 degrees.
    Appearance – 4.
First pour – Dark brown, clear.
Body – Dark brown/black, opaque. When held to the light, still opaque.
Head – Large (Maximum 5.1 cm, aggressive center pour), tan, medium density, average retention. Slowly diminishes to a five to seven mm crown and a rocky cap of varying thickness.
Lacing – None. Not unexpected with a 10.5% ABV brew (Marked on the can).
    Aroma – 4 – Predominantly cocoa
Flavor – Flavor begins with grape and cocoa, quickly becoming slightly vinous with cocoa as the aftertaste. No coffee, bourbon, or rye, but surprisingly some ephemeral black cherry appears. No hops, no dimethylsulfide, no diacetyl.
Palate – 4 – Medium, almost creamy, soft carbonation.
Impression and interpretation – 4 – While I’d normally drop the rating by 0.25 points for having no date, since this is an American Imperial Stout and has the year (2018) as part of the label I don’t feel that it is critical since the hops are minor players in this style of beer. The cacao nibs predominate both the aroma and flavor. Overall, a decent Impy stout.
    Rating 4, rDev -6.1%.

New Beer Sunday: Herb and Spice Beer

Mornin’ NBSers and fans of trying something unexpected in a beer. Also thanks to @lordofthewiens for today’s start. It’s definitely interesting to consider the concept of taking a vacation from retirement. ()

Our forecast here today is for mostly sunny, high in the low 80s (with a “real” feel in the low 90s). In addition, for about the 4th day in a row we’re expecting a round or two (or more) of scattered thunderstorms moving though in the afternoon.

This morning’s new beer is Deschutes Botanic Ale and has an interesting combination of flavors.

My review, still in progress, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/63/135274/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors are quite complex in that while there is juniper, lemongrass, coriander and black pepper up front, the toasted malt puts in an early appearance and then recedes to let all those ingredients to show. Then the herbs and spices begin to fade and up comes some slightly citric, herbal bitterness. I’m sure there are some other things going on here that I’m missing, especially in the long dry ending. Overall I’m mostly enjoying trying this beer and will probably will try another but beyond that I’ll not be seeking more. Nonetheless I’d say it’s worth a try for a complex, well made Herb and Spice beer.

    Cheers, all!

    Bottled 10/19/18 and 10.05% abv

A gentle pour results in a substantial, surprisingly frothy, cream colored head that never dissipates. With the pop of the cork, and the audible fizzy carbonation I never would have guessed that it would have an oatmeal stout, almost nitro like head. It sits on top of pretty burnt orange opaque body.

It smells like oak and grape must with white wine and some apricot and pear. A light sourness as a backdrop. While it smells very nice, it isn’t really pronounced either. I have my nose buried in the glass.

A solid tartness right up front in the flavor. A lot more than it led on. It has depth to it. Not a sharp, or hit and run type of sour. Then some zesty light fruit. Like fermented pears/green apples, honeydew melon, musty oak, and finishes with a lingering apricot. There is a raw flavor throughout that is more noticeable in the finish. I wouldn’t have been able to put my finger on it without reading the label, but it is definitely a honeycomb taste.

The body is a bit heavier for a wild ale. At least for anything I’ve had. It doesn’t quite come across as syrupy, but definitely creamy and full. Dry finish and not overly carbonated to take away from the flavors though, so a nice balance.

The more I drink it, the more I get a bit of orange and some darker fruit in the aftertaste. Very interesting and enjoyable beer. I would highly recommend trying it if given the opportunity. Thanks Phil!

Morning all! Thanks for the great start, Doc, and welcome back east!

Just finished a breakfast which included the first "black" trumpets of the season. I used quotes because we actually have three varieties that are quite similar, and emerge at different times of season, and this first one is not really black, but a dark apricot color, and is the most deliciously fragrant of the three. Was gonna wait until tomorrow and not share the woods with weekenders, but this batch of trumpets and eggs has me itching for more.

If the beverage store lets me in with my stinky woods clothes on I will be back to join y'all with a new beer after (hopefully) a successful stroll through the beautiful woods. See ya inna bit.

Welcome, all. I have some outside lawn, etc., work to do before I have a beer. I have one picked out. I don't normally post music with NBS (that seems more like a WBAYDN thing...), but for today's beer, it is asking for a musical selection or two.

So, here's a hint - can you tell me the beer? Winner gets... my congratulations!:

    Believe I'll start with this . . .

The first half of the can poured slightly hazy (I could see my fingers on the opposite side of the glass) but when things settled and I poured the second half the tone shifted to a turbid light gold color. Large white cap and lacing.

Aroma is a melange of citrus/fruit, lemon, grapefruit, pineapple and something like peach.

Taste presents a firm hop bitterness at first but that quickly resolves into a complex whole that manages to be both brightly hoppy and balanced at the same time. By mid palate I'm getting more fruit than citrus and the beer finishes on a high dry note.

    Medium texture with balancing carbonation.

Overall this beer comes across as having full bodied flavor without a full bodied texture. Almost light yet bursting with flavors that are complementary each to the other.

Welcome back, Doc! We are also in your home state staying a week on Long Lake in Bridgton (family friendly, perfect little beach for a 3.5 year old) before heading north to Liberty (a bit more rustic, deep water). We have our grandson with us this week. The jury is still out on whether it was a good idea. So far he has gone swimming and fished off the dock, baby sunfish so far. He spotted three loon and right now is watching a family of geese. Took a picture yesterday at Pigs Fly and it looks for all the world like he has a beer with a straw...big glass of apple juice!

I will have a new beer tonight. Its looking like it will be Dark Matter from Barreled Souls
