    Concept:

Industrial bay brewery in suburbs that “rolls up” bay door Friday afternoon/evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays for to-go only purchases, no taproom.

New beers drop twice a month in canned format with occasional bottle releases of barrel aged beer and mixed fermentation ale. Open every Friday, Saturday, Sunday with small shop of leftover cans/bottles from previous weeks, and growler fills.

    Assumptions:

    • Beer is high quality
    • Popular beer styles (IPA, Saison, Barrel aged, mixed fermentation)
    • Market prices
    • Area is middle income suburb area
    • Area has no breweries currently
    • One flagship beer goes into distribution locally

I voted no, as for me, the social aspect of visiting breweries is a lot of times more important than the beer. Not to say I go to breweries that pump out shit beer, but I much rather enjoy times with my friends accompanied by a few beers than just walk up to a stand and buy my beer to take home.

Obviously, I do buy beer from the grocery store, but I prefer to enjoy my local spots with good company! Not a terrible idea though. I have a feeling a lot of people will vote yes.

I put yes based on the fact that this is what Trillium Fort Point was and I purchased beer there.

Would this hypothetical brewery offer tastes/samples so people could decide what to buy? If so, this is what River Roost in VT is and what Alchemist was until they started offering $4 pours a few weeks ago.

I voted yes because this sounds hypey AF

The distro beer is packaged beer to stores, or kegs to bars. If the former will any beer hit local bars too?

    And this is where exactly?

I probably wouldn't go, if the beer is really good (worth traveling for) then there will likely be lines due to limited hours. I don't do long lines for beer.

    I have not voted (yet).

My initial reaction was to vote “No” since this set-up just does not sound very appealing to me. It almost reminds me of buying something out of the trunk of a car in the back of a strip shopping center (something I have never done).

But, I took note of one of the assumptions/criterion of “Area has no breweries currently”. If you added to the list there were no other beer retailers (stores) in the area maybe I could vote yes? But I must be buying beer somewhere else already so this is unlikely to be the case.

I am sure that others will chime in with similar thoughts to the following:

One of the allures of a brewery tap room (tasting room) is the aspect of conviviality which has a value to me even if the tap room (tasting room) is non-fancy, lacks a kitchen and has the appearance of a garage.

I recognize that this business approach is a low cost (investment) approach with the goal of minimizing expenditures but I fear that this minimalist approach will have negative consequences.

I have read numerous posts in past threads where folks have opined: If you do not have enough money to do things ‘right’ then just don’t get into the brewing business. Needless to say but what constitutes ‘right’ will vary from individual to individual.

I will continue to cogitate on this business approach and perhaps come back to vote.

    Questions I have are:

    · Is there another brewing business(es) that follows this minimalistic approach?

    · If yes to above: how long have they operated this way?

    · If yes to bullet 1: are they making ‘good’ money operating this way?

    Cheers!

I voted yes due to my current options available. I do have bars/breweries I can hit to enjoy food, atmosphere, etc. So I would utilize this concept for access to cans for my home stock. I guess I see it as a nice way to get fresh beer, its a solid option to add into my current set up to give me greater access to new product.
So for me sure, I am for it.
    Cheers

Regarding area has no breweries yet. This is still a good option since it would allow folks access to high end product. Beats going to grocery store/gas station to get year old IPA.

Why the roll up door? Can't folks just walk in the man door? Do local rules prohibit having a tap room?

Just selling beer-to-go on a limited schedule isn't a bad idea (especially if the brewery is a sideline business for the owners), and could be successful. Would I go? Not if it's just gonna be a shitshow of hypelord Kyle's everytime it's open.

Forgot this is basically what Tree House Munson was. Cans and growlers only.

    Thanks for the feedback everyone.

    @JackHorzempa

I know Tree House started this way & apparently River Roost. Not claiming this will take off like those breweries at all but it does exist.

In my local area, no concept exists like this. Everyone has taproom.

This is stepping stone concept. Plan would be to expand after a few years. I’ll private message you details on that. Just wanted to open poll to see what people thought of the initial concept.

And yes @beertunes , perhaps front door would be better than roll up door! Agree on that.

Dang it - I read the title and thought 'genius!' imagining somehow that this was a 'mobile food truck like' brewery that could make appointments at specified location to brew beer for those lacking the skills/equipment

For the concept you outlined, I doubt I'd visit simply because I prefer to enjoy a beer together with conversation even if the facilities are no more than a dirt floor enclosed carport (yes, that's you Scrappy Punk Brewing in Snohomish WA)

I vote no. For me, the tasting room is a necessity to find out what I like and don't like before committing to a 6 pack or growler.

But didn’t Aslin start off with a tasting room? Below is a review via TripAdvisor:

    “Reviewed September 24, 2015

Very nice, a few tweaks needed

Less than a week after opening. Clean nano-brewery and 7 beers available. Need flights (choose 4 of 7) and they're put on a wooden plate of the state of Virginia to carry as they have 4 holes for the tasting glasses. Nice descriptions on each beer. Nice bar area and plain metal barstools. People in training yet. No information to take home etc. Walls need some decorations. The second TV needs to be on. There was music, but could barely hear on speakers. One TV was on, but no sound or closed caption. Picnic table seating and standing tables. Concrete floor, that could use some kind of astro turf or indoor outdoor carpet and will get cold during winter. The 4 beers I choose were well crafted. Some of the information written on back wall was confusing. No mention of any extra things such as joining their beer club or frequent card. Nice glass goblet of hops on table. I'll be back, but they need to do a few things and make it more informative, and add some things. I'll give them time to work out the kinks.”

I’ve been three times. The first time the taproom was open and the other two times it wasn’t... talking with the guys there, (trying to recall a drunken conversation) they had issues with local regulations. At that point, they were selling beer straight out the door in cans and they had a hell of a following.

as long as there are tastes available to sample before buying - or singles; not just 4 packs, I would likely go.
Due to family life, I don't get much time to hang out in breweries / taprooms anymore. Most of my brewery visits are more along these lines - stop in, grab a couple packs or growlers and go.

I think they initially opened with a tasting room but were stopped quickly by local authorities over a licensing issue of some sort. I'm pretty sure that has been resolved or they moved to a 'friendlier' location. The current BA page for the brewery lists 'Bar' as an establishment type.

For my vote on the issue for this thread, I voted No. I like having a taptoom. If the beer is really great, I'm over the point of going to stand in line for to-go beer.

I voted yes because I'm more of a home drinker, so I often pick up crowlers and 32oz growlettes.
