I’ve been re-reading a lot of my old books. In one of them the protagonist’s wife had given him an Ipod for his birthday, and he was trying to figure out his top 100 songs to put in the Ipod. I don’t know about you, but it would take me forever to choose 100 songs. I can do my top 10, however. Please bear in mind this is a malleable list. It can change from day to day, with other songs being added and some deleted. At any rate, as of July 21, 2019, here are my Top 10 songs (in no particular order):

    Night Moves (Bob Seger)

    Glory Days (Bruce Springsteen)

    Running on Empty (Jackson Browne)

The Lonely One (Amazing Rhythm Aces)

    Satisfaction (Rolling Stones)

    Somebody to Love (Jefferson Airplane)

Come a Little Bit Closer (Jay and the Americans)

    Landfall (Jimmy Buffett)

    My One and Only (Adele)

    Goldberg Variations (Glenn Gould performance)

What’s in your list? As you ponder that question, maybe you’ll drink a new beer and maybe you’ll tell us about it. After all, you’re already using your brain for something, and it should be easy to write down a beer review.

    Enjoy the day!

I think we would get along just fine when it comes to music, @lordofthewiens. I love most of those songs. Although, I don't think I could ever come up with a top 10 list. I'm watching the last episode of Stranger Things. I wonder if I have a new beer in the fridge.

Edit: The answer is - yes. I have a new beer thanks to @JayWhitson. It's the GABF gold in 2016 and the WBC silver in 2014. Very enjoyable.

Pours a clear straw color with a foamy, thick, white head and sticky lacing.

The smell is lemon and yeast/bread. It's really nice.

The taste is very grainy and bready with banana. There's no spiciness.

The mouthfeel is medium/thick body, medium carbonation, with a long, banana finish.

    Overall a very enjoyable beer.

I was about to comment on the current book I’m reading but quickly realized that is not the theme of today’s thread.

As 1AM comes and goes I don’t have enough energy to post a top 10 song list. Currently, I’m listening to Beth Hart / Joe Bonamassa. I plan to post again here “tomorrow” and hopefully by then I can contribute to the top 10 song discussion.

For now, this beer is courtesy of the veritable @jhavs from the Sloppy Seconds BIF.

    Tree House Brewing Company

    Candy Shop

Imperial Milk Stout | ALC. 9.4% BY VOL.

Look: The beer pours from the bottle void of color. Viscous. A tall, three finger head forms. Light brown. Densely packed bubbles. No visible carbonation. Opaque. Enticing lace coats the glass.

Smell: Cold brewed coffee. Creamy with a slight acidic coffee note. Coffee yogurt. Milk chocolate. Nutty. No indication of 9.4%.

Taste: Up front is a sweet hazelnut, milk chocolate flavor. Nutella remains and goes dry. Mid palate: Dry cocoa and acrid espresso flavor. The finish is long, dry, nutty and slightly bitter. Roasty. Some toasted bread.

Feel: Moderate level of carbonation that drinks silky smooth. Lips are coated with chocolate sweetness, but the beer finishes rather dry and pleasantly bitter.

Overall: The name Candy Shop suggests “dessert stout.” This beer hits that spot while also drinking like a roasty, toasty, slightly bitter stout. Excellent beer. No indications of the 9.4% ABV.

Doc, I am going to do you one better & NAME THAT BOOK! Broken Prey by John Sandford.. "AmIright or amIright?" asked Ned Ryerson.

The fellow in the upper-L corner is the man that my late-Pops referred to as his "pseudo-Uncle Raymond", making him my "pseudo-Great Uncle Raymond. As a ChANdler, I have been reading mystery & detective stories since I was a wee lad, beginning with "Encyclopedia Brown" & "Sherlock Holmes" & working my way through the classics, into the pulps & remaining contemporary since then. In high school, they offered a semester-long course in "Mystery & Detective Fiction" taught by Mr. Pap (William "Bill" Papavasillion, R.I.P.) & I not only raced through the curriculum, but Pap & I would exchange paperbacks. Speaking of paperbacks, Hard Case Crime has a series of new & reprinted books that feature original covers meant to evoke the pulps.

As to a Top 10 list, that is tough since my musical tastes are so variegated. My 'rents were into classical & jazz, I was a rock & roller from an early age & the Navy introduced me to C&W and Rap. I am writing a thinly-veiled fictional autobiography entitled "You've Had a VERY Good Life!" & I frequently imagine what the soundtrack to the movie (dream big) would be like.

In keeping with your inspiration & my seCANd paragraph, here is one that I really dig, whether John Cale's original version or the cover by Siouxsie & the Banshees, plus someone did a nice job with the pulps:

My first beer of the day is a CANtinuation of the past couple/few days when it has been oppressively hot & humid & I have primarily been drinking Lagers, especially Pilsners to keep cool without falling out:

Mornin' NBSers with a thanks to @lordofthewiens for the start this morning.

No new beers again this Sunday as our relatives visiting from Europe have done their planned road trip and are now hanging around here for a few days before they fly back. That means some quiet times getting caught up and introducing their youngest one to some local sights and sounds.

However, that will definitely be done slowly and leisurely with lots of cool liquids and mostly indoors since it's expected to be a cloudless bright sunny day here with very high temps (Currently it is still in the low to mid 80s with a feels-like in the low 90's :flushed::grimacing:).

    Cheers, all!

    Alexander Graham Bell & beer!?!

Last week I discussed a beer from Big Spruce brewing located in Nova Scotia and today I have another of their beers: The Silver Tart Sour Raspberry Wheat Ale.

Big Spruce seems to like long names for their beers.

If you would like to learn more about Big Spruce I would recommend that you read my post from last week.

On the back of the can:

“The Silver Tart is a kettle soured American Wheat ale we developed based on a recipe for a raspberry shrub contained in the notes of Alexander Graham Bell. The tartness from the kettle sour is balanced by the sweetness from the raspberries we condition this beers on. It’s a perfect summer quaffer. Sláinte!”

Also, there is a list of ingredients: “Water, Organic Barley. Organic Wheat, Organic Raspberries, Cascade Hops, Yeast.”

Now, how many of you know what the connection to Alexander Graham Bell is here? To my surprise I learned during this vacation that Alexander Graham Bell lived in Nova Scotia for a long period of time; below is from Wikipedia:

“By 1885, a new summer retreat was contemplated. That summer, the Bells had a vacation on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, spending time at the small village of Baddeck.[129] Returning in 1886, Bell started building an estate on a point across from Baddeck, overlooking Bras d'Or Lake.[130] By 1889, a large house, christened The Lodge was completed and two years later, a larger complex of buildings, including a new laboratory,[131] were begun that the Bells would name Beinn Bhreagh (Gaelic: beautiful mountain) after Bell's ancestral Scottish highlands.[132][N 20]”

There is a museum about Alexander Graham Bell in Beddeck, Nova Scotia but unfortunately due to time constraints all that I saw was the outside of the buildings and the lobby of the main building. I wish I would have had time to do a thorough visit. Well, let’s visit an Alexander Graham Bell inspired beer instead.

Served in my Big Spruce glass:

    Appearance:

A pretty pink color with a BIG head that has a pinkish hue.

    Aroma:

    Wow! BIG raspberry aroma here.

    Taste:

An enticing raspberry flavor accompanied by a pleasing tartness. Low-moderate bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

Light/Medium bodied with a spritzy mouthfeel.

    Overall:

I think this beer is very good. A wonderful beer for a hot summer day.

Good morning, NBS friends and family! I've got a bit of an experiment on my hands today.

I ran across this collaboration pack at my "local." I've never had anything from Sun King, but all four beers of this 10th anniversary pack are with different breweries, all of them well known and quite good, so I figured: worst case, I'll try four different beers.

Nice selection, too: an IPA, a fruited sour, a Brut IPA, and a Baltic Porter. Since it's early, let's start off with the fruited sour: Highway Queen, a collaboration with Cigar City.

Described as a "sour ale with raspberries, cherries, zinfadel grapes," right off the nose, I'm thinking Gose. Not sure if there is any sea salt, but there's a very light funkiness and rustic wheat going along with the tangy fruit tones - and very little in the way of tannic or vinegar sourness. All three fruit are present on the nose in about equal strength. A touch of vanilla, perhaps from oak.

(Post note: I don't know if this is officially a Gose, as the can doesn't say, but that is how it is classified in the BA database, so it looks like I'm not the only one who got that impression!)

Much more sour on the palate, but really driven by intense raspberry notes up front, supplemented by the grapes. After the initial tart shock has kind of worn off, there's a very mild rustic funk, along with grainy wheat; the raspberries return with a slightly sweet kiss of flavor minus the strong tartness imparted up front.

Not getting much of the cherry; I feel like it's adding to the overall profile, like in a fruit punch, but they don't really stand out. The unique semi-dry quality of zinfadel grapes definitely manages to stand out against the raspberries. You have to dig deep to draw out the oaky qualities, but once you notice them, they complement the overall tone quite well.

While at first it comes across as moderately-to-highly sour, it only takes a couple of sips to adjust - and this is not a vinegary-sharp American sour. The sourness is in line with a Gose, albeit high for the style (as is the 5.7% ABV), and seems to be mostly driven by the fruit - and again, there's no evidence on the can or packaging that implies this beer was brewed to fit the Gose style, specifically.

Crisp, lip-smacking, and not quite as crushable as Gose can be, but also a much better example of a multi-fruited low ABV sour than many other commercial attempts I've tried recently. This doesn't come across as a mess, in other words.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/20672/418837/?ba=Roguer#review
    3.77 / -4.3% (2nd review, 4th overall rating)

I'm borderline 4.00 in flavor. I do not see any reason to rate this to style as a Gose. Instead, treat it as a sub-6.0% fruited sour. Definitely an enjoyable beer, and a good start to my morning.

    Cheers!

It appears that the imperial coffers at the Lickinghole Creek estate have gotten a little bare, so we no longer enjoy our Russian imperial stout from Pappy barrels, but a more generic "Kentucky bourbon barrels" for one year.

Lest ye get any ideas, I will still crush any uprising with a flow of darkness that will bring billowing storm clouds of brown that will not leave your sight for what seems forever. Sheets of liquid will block you attempts to see through our rule, and the memory will stay on the inner walls of you memory to block out any further thoughts of rebellion.

My forces will bring devastation to the people who don't follow my rule of the land. Fire and brimstone will mar the low areas, with the smoked char of your weak attempts to gain strength are smote. The suffering you endure will result in the astringency of your tears lacing the sides of your nose.

I will ravage your lands, leaving you with the taste of my dominance as punishment for your defiance. The bitter sting of your burning homes will fill your senses as you wish for an elixir to give you relief from the reality of the vengeance I bring that you have brought upon yourselves. But to show I am a forgiving and loving leader, I will offer a pittance of unsweetened chocolate to those who bow down and swear allegiance again to the realm. For I am strong, I am bold, and I will not relinquish my rule, to anyone.

Lickinghole Creek's Enlightened Despot is one of a series of imperial stouts (Russian and American without much clear differentiation on this site) that carry names that speak of heads of state: Great Commander, Supreme Leader, Heir Apparent, as well as a few takes on the Despot name. Their Virginia Black Bear RIS might be the base for a bunch of these beers, though I may be assuming too much to think that beers with the label art featuring the beer shown here stem from that base.

The site here also indicates that the beer was aged in Pappy van Winkle barrels, though my guess is that was only the initial release (in 2014, it seems). This version does have the barrel mix with the char to produce a strong woodsy bitterness behind the more obvious char. There's just enough residual sugar to give the impression of an unsweetened brownie at times. The bourbon itself is pretty well integrated, or perhaps somewhat masked, by the base beer until the glass warms. Then, it plays a high note to the roasted malt base until the end where its heat and spice sneaks through and lingers a little.

Watching The Open and sipping the rest of this glass. Top ten music lists and desert island discs are always hard to compile, as others have indicated. Many of us could do top ten pop, rock, metal, jazz, classical, etc. and think trying to mix them would be quite frustrating.

Does anyone here think they would not get completely sick of their 10 favorite songs if that was all they had to listen to? Luckily we have access to a wide variety of music that we hopefully can find something that fits our mood. Cheers!

As my review ran a little long (actually, perhaps short by my standards), I figured I'd tackle our illustrious host's (@lordofthewiens ) intro separately. :grinning:

I couldn't possibly narrow a list down to 100 songs. Music is incredibly important in my life. At any time, I've got 8000-9000 songs with me, across various genres (not just brutal metal, but .... lots of that, too), and I frequently swap out entire albums. My CD collection alone - physical copies, not just digital - exceeds 1500, which is where I stopped counting. I'm constantly finding new music on YouTube and via streaming in my car.

I do have a personal list of top 10 nearly perfect songs (or albums), but that's not quite the same - much like movies, an imperfect song may still strike juuuuust the right chord with you, personally.

So I suppose, if I had to pick 10 songs, I'd start with the artists I can never walk away from, and from there, pick a single song. That's at least one approach. Other than #1, these are in no particular order.

Beethoven - Ninth Symphony (hands down #1)
Alice in Chains - No Excuses (love the hard stuff, but man .... this song is nearly perfect)
Type O Negative - Anesthesia (tough call to forego their earlier work)
Opeth - Bleak (makes my list of 10 nearly perfect songs)
Steven Wilson - The Raven That Refused to Sing (hardest artist to narrow down to one song, hands down)
    Pink Floyd - Hey You
Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize (kind of cheating here)
Samuel Barber - Adagio for Strings
    Billy Joel - Goodnight Saigon
    Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath

Man, some incredible bands left off the list, and some tough darn choices. Not a very heavy list, either. Great topic, doc! (And @cjgiant : no, with this list, I would never get sick of them. )

At Flying Fish a special seasonal tripel, is delicious treat, and represents why I visit brewers.
    a) Dark amber body, mostly clear, with lingering, pearling, lacing head.
    s) Ton of lumber, both fresh sawn and bourbon laced, with wild yeast.
    t) Follows smell but adds complex caramel, butter, toffee, that's tempered with pepper against the sweet storm.
    f) Thicker feel, candied without cloying.
    o) I'd buy more of this. Try 24.

I rate this higher than Ba-ers. Thrilled to be first review.
    a) A spring saison look.
    s) Fresh, lemony, rare smell.
    t) Tuned lemon, saison, yeast & pilsner to perfection.
    o) Saison is strong suit for Cape May - the fresh ingredients matter.

    **Salt & Sea | Flying Fish 4.04/5 rDev +2%**

If anyone is going to get a salty gose right, it's a shore brewer, might as well be FF on Jersey Shore (or close 2nd, Carton Digger)
    a) Lofts a big white head over a slightly hazed golden body, but it's lost quickly due to salt and fruit additions.
    s) Strawberry, lime, salt air. (a bit too much strawberry for me)
    t) Follows aroma with bigger punch than its light ABV - great food beer! In this case with diced chicken breast over home grown salad of mint, basil, cilantro, first tomatoes with pickles, garlic, grapes. Yummm.
    f) Bright, fruity, crisp.
    o) As good a salad, cold protein, seafood beer as it comes in summer.

pleased to add, taste and review.... imperial blue pale ale - wheat and lactose base - low ibu.
a - true to blue milk , blue no 1.
    s - solid apa aroma
t - out of this world with the fruit dominant among the varied hops
f - thinnish and cannot help but think of sky blue ice pops thinning further.
    o - good once.
Blue milk, also known as Bantha milk, was a rich blue-colored milk produced by female banthas. Sentients drank it, and also used it in ice cream, butter and yogurt. It was notably available on Outer Rim planets such as Tatooine Lothal, and Lah'mu.

Greetings fellow NBSers, gonna hit the woods today, even though y'day in the hills was still too dry for shrooms, and the heat was brutal. Gonna give it a shot in a moister area I know, even though it's lower elevation, and probably hotter. Was a wreck after an hour y'day, probably won't make it more than that today. Def. gonna be thirsty.

Those who have the willpower, acceptance, and forgiveness to be my friends in real life know the love (life long consuming obsession?) I have for writing poetry and lyrics, and my worship of the works of Bob Dylan and Robert Hunter. No surprise some "favorite" songs chosen here today are lyrics driven. Ten picks, though not top ten, something I wouldn't be able to narrow down. Maybe top 1,000 if I had a while to think about it.

Axis Bold As Love - Hendrix
    Working Class Hero- Lennon
    Wooden Ships- Kantner/Crosby
    Box Of Rain- Hunter
    Suzanne- Cohen
    The Iron Man- Paxton
    Ringing Of Revolution- Ochs
    Tangled Up In Blue- Dylan
