David you make a great point. While most of this younger generation of beer consumers are gravitating towards super sweet thick sugar ladened high ABV beers,( alco-pops) I bet you they wouldn't like the OG Nelson if they did get the opportunity to drink it, it wouldn't be sweet enough and GASP......it tastes like beer :astonished:

    Cheers,

Tellin' y'all Devil's Triangle is as close as you were gonna get to OG Nelson.

They sorely need to collab on a new batch of it sometime.

I think you mean that they wouldn't like it because it "isn't a monkish freshie" or it isn't a hazy that tastes like a glass of orange juice.

Guys, just to warn ya'll in this timeline, Trump is gonna be president. I know, sounds crazy but it's true. Also, bet big money on the Patriots in the Super Bowl a few years from now when they seem to be staring down an insurmountable deficit.

I was at Alpine a few nights ago and had the draft Nelson, if that's the Nelson that's gonna hit distro then no it's not close to OG, though my memories are fading and I've probably hyped it to something in my head that it wasn't. We all probably are. We need some infinity stones so we can figure this out. Wait, you all in 2013 don't know what those are yet. They're gonna be really cool, just know that.

All the Alpine beers now have that Green Flash house flavor. I don’t know if it’s the water, their yeast strain, problems scaling up or what but it’s not good. Until they stop brewing Alpine beers at the GF factory it will never be the same. If they brewed a small batch at the og Alpine brewery it would probably be like before but also like before you would only get it at the brewery or a few places around San Diego.

True. My question is: Can you brew on the GF system without getting the GH house flavor/yeast? Assuming you have the full control on the entire process.

Who knows. Maybe if you used ABC’s yeast, trucked in Alpine mountain water and dialed in the scale up. GF hasn’t done any of those things.

My local liquor store sold singles, so I had to give it a try:

Not only is it not OG Nelson, it doesn’t taste very good regardless of what it’s called.
*edit It’s actually not that bad, but still, like whatevers, man!

Agreed on it not being OG Nelson level, but to say it's not good is a stretch for me personally. The wife had a bottle on her 2nd 6er that she asked me to sample, saying it tasted slightly sweet and had lots of floaties, to which I agreed. She opened another bottle and was happy with its taste and Nelson attributes. It's not what we'd all love it to be, OG Nelson, but in her experience more bottles have been good vs not. I miss the Rye spicy notes in this batch, but the Nelson hop attributes show but maybe not as dynamically as desired. My personal opinion

I made a correction to my post. First sip left a lot to desire, but after crushing the bottle, it was enjoyable, but still whatever’s.

I just opened an Alpine Nelson bottle (dated 7/2) I picked up an hour ago at one of my other local local shops. They have a few 6pk in the cooler. It’s definitely not OG Nelson for sure. Took a photo and the looks doesn’t look like the above photo. Mine looked a little bit more unfiltered. Maybe because of being outside in this heat and humidity? First taste was mare on bitter side with a hint of citrus. Could be the rye. But taste gets better as it warms up quick. No hint of spice. Reminds me of their last Nelson bottles. Okay for a couple bottles. I’m going to hold on to 3 bottles and giveaway the other 2. This is not drain pour. But it’s not og.

    Since there’s only 2 answers to chose from. . . .
    Nothing from me.

    I prefer the old logo. . . .
Drink Alpine, or go to bed.
. . .in this case I’d go to bed.
    Good night y’all :stuck_out_tongue:

David made me do this. Guess I couldn't wait for cans. Color is OK, its a good west coast IPA and definitely gets better as it warms up a bit. Here is whats missing IMHO, That wonderful soft tangerine note, the amazing aromatics, the spicy rye and super soft body, in other words pretty much everything that made the OG so beloved. This has a lot of red grapefruit bitterness. Not a bad beer but it ain't Nelson or getting closer. Oh well, maybe cans will be better.

    Cheers,

(Unfortunately?) I had plenty of the OG in the past. Took me some time to give up comparing the new stuff to the old Alpine. It made drinking the current releases much more relaxed. Enjoy for what it is, it's still pretty good.

I miss the strong white grape flavor Nelson beers used to have. Seems like last year the hop flavor changed to more melon, maybe more tropical? I don't know how to describe flavors, especially fruit, but I don't get the recognizable Nelson flavor i first tasted in OG Nelson from any Nelson beers anymore, except *maybe* the Cellarmaker Mount Nelson IPAs.

The good ones are still good, but different.
