Agreed that they're great beers but they don't have the flavor that made me love the Nelson hop back when Alpine was in it's prime. Which is why I'm not sure that brewing Alpine Nelson at Alpine would result in the beer we all miss.

I think your also experiencing a palate shift, we all are and I always keep that in the back of my mind when revisiting an old school classic. But the bottom line is, palate shift or not, if Shawn or Pat brewed the OG recipe up on the hill with the exact recipe it would be representative of the OG regardless of how we perceive it, time moves on and so does our taste buds, I'm sure I would probably say the same because of that. We all hold on to the greatness of something from our past and truth be told it's hard and quite often never lives up to those memories of /flavors or smells.

    Cheers,

I maybe mistaken but the farm in which they sourced their Nelson didn’t they sell to have the land developed so that particular Nelson hop farm no longer exists. Which means we will never ever see the OG ever again no matter who brews it or where it’s brewed.

    Changing the subject here.
So I noticed that the born on or canned dates have changed for Alpine beers. I remember they had drink by date stamped on the cans/bottles or on the packaging. The Windows Up at Total Wine had a 9-something stamped on the bottles. The Nelson bottles was dated 7-2. Looks like Alpine did the right thing in changing to born on date.

Lol. That’s what I meant Bud. Drive to hilltop. Glad they still had it in cooler. I may head to RiiP today. All depends on if the wife has plans for us.

So just did a side by side with Nelson and Westeez with the wife. Wasn't even close, both felt Westeez was far more dynamic and didn't have a prominent grapefruit element that Alpine Nelson portrayed. Not that this batch of Nelson is bad, but the Westeez is far closer to what we both wanted on a Nelson-dominate beer. Then I told her of the price difference ($13/6er vs. $20/4pk) and she said she's happy to keep drinking Nelson.

Agree with your wife. The price is adequate to the quality of the beer. It's just solid, very solid and affordable brew.

Westeez is an outstanding Nelson WCIPA - Alpine's version nowadays doesn't size up; probably fairer to compare to fond memories of days gone by.

Don't forget Nelson Slayer, another great recent ASB hazy. Really hope they have some more Nelson stuff on the way.

Only got to try it on draft on release day. At that time, I enjoyed it but had it a tier below the others for my palate and preferences.
