Happy New English Oatmeal Stout Sunday!

Pretty nice day here on the Western Slope, at the trailhead, 84, sunny, some big clouds. Having a very tasty brew, need to find another bottle. This is the best one from this brewery for me so far. A very nice sipper, creamy/silky. Nice to see it around here.

I agree. I thought the name was very odd for a NEIPA, and you comment on the script font is spot on.

If you ever get the chance, or if you could ever convince that lazy ass, good for nothing @aoampm to send you one, their Black Pearl is awesome. Mixed reviews, but when my buddy shared one with me a couple years back, it blew me away.

Hello, NBS friends. I hope the weather where you’re enjoying New Beer Sunday is as nice as it is here in Northern Indiana, because it is a picture perfect summer day.

In response to the original post from our fearless leader @cjgiant, I am a planner (as the oldest of 5 kids), so I’m usually a week or two or five out in planning my NBS beers.

Until I come here on Sunday and see something I have tagged for a couple of weeks in the future and I move it up because I like to see contrasting reviews in the same week for the same beer.

Otherwise, I try to focus on things most here can access and stay away from “Whaleville” unless that territory is represented by something like a BCBS variant that is relatively accessible.

In other words, if I luck out and trip across a KBBS, I probably would not present it here.

But I will present stuff from Lagunitas (beer #1) and a Sierra Nevada/DFH collab (#2). Oh yes indeedy do.

This beer pours a hazy golden straw color and has the most beautiful foamy white head imaginable. There are fruity/piney hop notes on the nose from the base Centennial/Chinook hops, and the Citra/Mosaic/Cashmere hops add dank notes and something that reminds me of Juicy Fruit chewing gum.

As I was ambling through the olfactory senses portion of this review, I was wondering to my beer nerd self if the Citra/Mosaic dry hopping was going to fit the iconic base beer hop profile, because Citra and Mosaic hops are both heavy “Alpha Male” hops, and Centennial and Chinook hops like their moment in the spotlight, too.

On the taste, the Citra/Mosaic hops indeed take the lead, and they play pretty nicely with the base hops, but they’re the slightest bit distracting. This tastes great, but not as great as the original, IMHO.

It is still worth seeking, though, and I’m glad I picked up a 6er. Cant wait to try the rest of them.

Not sure if his allowance would cover the shipping. I know mine doesn't for a return package. Maybe I'll just have to plan a Hawaiian vacation - costs about as much, I think, but I'd be in Hawaii.

Ironically, I could almost copy and paste the last part of your response about the beer @Wasatch posted a couple posts above yours.

    Level Beer
    Neon Swimsuit
    - Summer Ale

For a summer beer, Neon Swimsuit is average looking at best. Light orange and cloudy with a wispy white foam head that dissipates and leaves little lace.

Smells a bit like an old school slightly skunked pale ale. Citrus zest, a touch of pine, even a bit of spaghetti sauce.

The first thing noticed in the flavor (for me) was a muted diacetyl butteriness. Blended with a caramelized honey and some skunky old lager hopiness. All together just weird flavors yet somehow they work!

Slightly slick along with being undercarbonated, this beer manages to pull of a refreshing quality but just barely. Balanced, favoring sweet.

This beer is a bit of a mess. Not exactly what I'd reach for during the dog days of summer, but I can think of worse. All in all, just an average beer which saddens me as Level has been on their game lately.

    3.26. Cheers.

Another Canadian beer to try. Pretty fresh date, 5/23/19. This was awesome. Great rocky head retention/thick foamy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, mango, honeydew melon, blueberries, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, and pine hops; with moderate wheat, cracker, white bread dough malts; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium-high carbonation, light-medium body, and fairly crisp/clean finishing. Creamy/grainy wheat, some sticky hops, and light resins/rinds in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing lingering bitter dryness, no hop astringency. Amazingly smooth/soft, not aggressive, not watery for 4.5%. Tastes like 100% Simcoe, maybe some Columbus as well. Very juicy, vibrant, and fairly dank/earthy hops; with a great clean pale/wheat malt backbone for the ABV. Minimal residual sweetness with crisp dryness. Loved it! 4.15

Rusty Nail is a gem. Hoping to hear wether or not @WesMantooth agrees in the near future. Maybe he'll be nice and share it with @SomethingClever , but I doubt it. I sure as hell wouldn't.

This beer pours a rich mahogany brown with a full tan head. Beautiful beer, and it leads into a beer with big maple aromas and what I’m assuming is birch (though I’m not aware of a “birch aroma”) that is very organic and earthy.

The maple is up front on the taste, but it is actually the rhythm guitar to the fantastic lead guitar lick offered by that organic, earthy note from the nose. It’s a little spicy, it’s a LOT oaky, to the point that you’re wondering where the vanilla notes relinquish control to the maple and vice versa.

I wish I had a campfire, a dozen or so NBSers, and a keg of this beer so we could solve all the world’s problems, because this beer is at that level, IMHO.

Glad you didn't feel the same of me - like you're pouring good beer down the sewer. Not that I'm calling... ok, yes, apparently I am, metaphorically.

Probably the best beer I’ve have from Treehouse’s curiosity series. Reminds me a lot of Very Hazy, which I had for the first time a week or so ago on draft. Delicious DIPA! Hope it becomes a regular.

New Beer Sunday: Russian Imperial Stout

Evenin’ NBSers, with an alert for fans of the big and bold who may not have tried tonight's beer.

After a busy and complicated day (which looks as though it may be repeated next week), this evening’s new beer is the 2018 Sierra Nevada Narwhal. Many of you already know this beer but for some reason this is the first time I’m getting around to trying the Narwhal. (Still haven’t figured out why SN would name this beer after a small whale with one of it’s two teeth so long it is sometimes called the unicorn of the sea.)

My review, which may be revised as I drink more of the beer, is here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/140/86149/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors of this RIS are almost entirely about the dark roasted malt. There’s lots of dark roasted malt complexity that includes a bit of licorice, a fair amount of chocolate, a bit of coffee, a bit of dark stone fruit and a bit of smoke. The light bitterness is from the dark roasted malt and gradually fades away in the back of the palate. This is definitely a sippable and enjoyable example of an RIS that I’ll definitely be trying again. There’s also a good chance I’ll be doing a compare and contrast between this RIS another, perhaps Old Rasputin.

Music on the player this evening is from a collection of songs that were part of movies.

    Cheers, all!

    Great review of the beer.

I do remember noting that I would like more from the body, and that it’s a bit thin for my preference. But for the porter style I didn’t want to knock it too much. I thought it did good staying in that classification throughout, something I can’t say for all “porters” being brewed.

    Cheers! :beers:

My first ever anniversary beer from them. This was mind blowing amazing. Deep crystal clear ruby/brown color, great rocky head retention/spotty soapy lacing for the ABV. Aromas and flavors of huge caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, coconut, toasted oak, raisin, plum, prune, cherry, fig, date, apricot, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, and brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of licorice, molasses, rum, juniper, spruce, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, peat smoke, oak char, leather, tobacco, cinnamon, peppercorn, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Light herbal, grassy, peppery, roasted bitterness; and bourbon, rum, gin, oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full body; very creamy, silky, velvety, bready malts; light slickness, sticky hops, chalky roast, and oak tannins in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing lingering bitter/tannic dryness; no cloying, acrid, astringency. Dangerously smooth/soft. Mild increasing warmth of 12.7%, and lingering barrel booze. Absolutely killed it with this strong ale. Perfectly balanced between rich malts, fruity yeast, and barrel presence/integration. Light residual sweetness with lingering dryness. WOW. Insane balance between all the styles in the blend. 4.47

I’ve got a Rusty Nail that was generously sent to me from @TheGent that I JUST about popped after reading these.

But who am I kidding, I don’t need another big beer tonight...

But I’m very much looking forward to that one!

You’re now the second Indiana contributor that has posted this beer. Hopefully I see it soon. It sounds delightful.

Hello NBS. I’ve had a glorious day thus far. While the wife is doing her thing, figured this is a good time to try something new and share my two hoots.

Beach Grease - Pistons & Palms Pilsner
    [IMG]
On tap at local pizza press. 16oz serving from tulip glass.
L: golden straw yellow with complete transparency. About a half finger of head from the pour with lower end of moderate lacing. Singular streams of bubbles string up from the depths of the glass contributing to the frothy white ring that resides around the perimeter. As a package (and on this warm day), it has me salivating.
S: very grainy on the nose with hints of citrus and black pepper.
T: quite nice. Citrus at front, with lemon being the major player. Grain flavor provides the undertones with honeysuckle/lemon finish.
F: light in body and light to medium in weight. Moderate carbonation.
O: nice tasting for a hot day and enjoyable. Can’t go wrong. A touch sweet for how I prefer my pils, but refreshing nonetheless.
