Hi, I am thinking about moving to the upper Shenandoah Valley and was curious about beers around the area. I know there is a brewpub in Woodstock and a few more in Winchester. I am curious about a brewery that I saw a sign for, the Mount Jackson Brewery. I looked online and found only a Facebook page. I wrote a message, but have no response. Anybody know about this brewery or who might be involved? Thanks. Rick
Welcome to BA! There's definitely not a brewery currently open by that name and I have not heard any recent news about one coming under this name. Limited info on that facebook page. My guess is it's probably a brewery that never came to fruition. Your post is probably more appropriate for the South Atlantic forum. You will probably get better responses for recommendations in the area you may be moving. https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/forums/south-atlantic.17/
Welcome to the BA site, Rick. Winchester actually has 5 breweries https://www.beeradvocate.com/place/...chester&s_id=VA&c_id=&submit=Search&brewery=Y and has one https://www.beeradvocate.com/place/...odstock&s_id=VA&c_id=&submit=Search&brewery=Y so you have some work to do getting acquainted with them. Further east in Leesburg and Ashburn are a number of other breweries that I can attest produce very good to great beers. Click on Places on the main menu and you'll get a form to use to search the BA database for Breweries, good beer Bars, Eateries with good tap lists, good beer Stores, and Homebrew stores. The Places feature here on BA is great for people who are traveling.
Thanks all the info especially that my question should go in South Atlantic, not Mid Atlantic like I had thought. I saw the sign about eight weeks ago and it was something like 'Future Home of Mount Jackson Brewery' so the company had at least found a home. The lack of info on the web is concerning, though. Never expected there to be a brewery in the area and as pointed, Winchester has plenty, so I'll be good.
Western Loudoun has a few farm breweries that are nice and not too far of a drive. Also south to harrisonburg you'll find some good ones. Welcome to the area and enjoy your exploring.
Hey Guys, found this while trying to do some research on the area. I am coming there in a couple of weeks after spending some time in the OBX. I’d love to try the best local hazy IPAs or porters/stouts. I have been to Adroit, Aslin, Ocelot etc...but I was hoping for a hidden gem local to Winchester/Front Royal area. Any suggestions? Cheers!
^^^^ In Winchester I like Alesatian Brewing, its on the pedestrian mall above Roma Pizza (you actually use their door). They typically have a few ipas on tap and a stout or porter. I usually end up there for pizza and beer when in Winchester https://alesatianbrewing.com/ Also about a 1/2 a block away is Broken Window. I like the vibe there, the staff is friendly and the building is cool. The beer is good enough, but I prefer Alesatian. Front Royal has Front Royal Brewing which I've not been impressed with, they also have the VA Craft Beer Museum a couple of blocks away. And Backroom Brewing is a short drive north of town. If you are considering Front Royal, I'd go south to Sperryville and check out PenDruid. They make a lot of interesting and unique beers using a their own wild yeast strain. http://www.pendruid.com/
I stopped in here on Sunday on my way through the area and agree that the beers are solid and the pizza pretty good for western VA. But I bought cans of the Hazy IPA that was on tap and opened one last night and it was full of floaties. Checked the bottom of the can and it was canned in July!?! My bad for not checking, but that's a long time for them to still be around. (It actually drank OK, but wasn't as good as the one on tap)
Blast from the past on this post. I hit up Alesatian when I was there in mid August. Ok beer, nothing crazy. I also went to Escutcheon and Winchester Brew Works. Brew Works was terrible-avoid. I was pleasantly surprised by Escutcheon-solid place and decent beer. I am back in this part of the world a couple of times a year and I would go back to this place again.
Anyone checked out Hawksbill Brewing, Swover Creek or Woodstock Brew House? Going to be up in that area this weekend and may stop by. The only one I've really heard anything about is Hawksbill.
I agree with schteve on Woodstock, although I haven't been there since they changed the food menu. Hawksbill is about on par with woodstock beer wise, although i think i prefer woodstock. no food at hawksbill if that matters. also depending on your group size woodstock doesnt have any bar seats, just tables. I tend to prefer sitting at the bar if solo or in a duo for the visit. Also have Box Office Brewing and Sibling Rivalry a little north in strasburg. Only been to each once, box office is much bigger with food and entertainment, also probably has better beers. Sibling Rivalry is pretty small but has a nice vibe and worth stopping if you're in the area.
Thanks for all the feedback for stops in the area last week. I ended up stopping by Front Royal Brewing, Woodstock Brew House and Swover Creek Farms. Gotta say my overall favorite was Front Royal Brewing. Just got a flight which included their newly released Sour or Sorcery Gose, Blood Orange Sour of Sorcery along with Tenfold DIPA and Knight of the Valley Porter. All were very good. Grabbed cans of Boyd's Garage to bring back. I agree Woodstock was good as well and ended up having lunch there. Really enjoyed Casey Jones Vanilla Porter. Got fish tacos and it was not warm, cold tortillas and loaded with want too much salsa on top. Swover Creek was not worth the extra drive to what amounted to a country back road and all 4 beers in my flight were pretty undrinkable. The spaces at each were all unique with a very cool vibe.
