Last weekend my wife and I drove out to Las Angeles to watch over our grandsons while their mother took a course. She is a single mom and she didn’t have anyone to watch them. There wasn’t any way they could be left alone while she attended classes, so she enlisted our help. We were more than happy to help out; she doesn’t get much time to herself.

So we found ourselves at the hotel with two grandsons ages 9 and 13. It’s always good to see them. At the same time there was some trepidation on our part. The boys are spirited (that might be a charitable description) and tend to fight a lot. The older one delights in teasing his younger brother, often to the point of tears. We decided to try to keep them as separate as possible, and to keep them as busy as possible.

The hotel room had bunk beds set up, so they weren’t in the same bed. There was a big swimming pool, so they could splash around and we could watch them while we had some libations.

Our first excursion was Universal Studios. We were there for 10 hours and the boys loved it. For me it’s a little difficult standing in line for an hour to get a five minute ride, but the kids rolled with it. At least there was beer available. We returned to the hotel for dinner al fresco and more swimming.

The next day was a Hollywood tour, then a visit to Ripley’s Odditorium. Again, not my cup of tea, but a lot of fun for the kids.

The surprising thing for my wife and I was that the boys did not get into a single altercation. Maybe they’re maturing, but we had a great time with them and look forward to doing it again.

While we were in Las Angeles, I was able to try several new beers. This could be your opportunity to try a new beer, and to tell us about it. You know the drill by now. Describe the appearance, aroma, taste, and mouthfeel. Give an overall impression. Pictures are always appreciated, as are comments on other posts.

    Enjoy the day!

Wow how cool to see NBS this early! Sounds like a great time with the kids, Doc! Always bugged me too that my kids acted better for their grandparents than for the ex and me.

I'm just getting a cup of coffee and making ready to hit the woods below The Trapps (this is a view from above where I pick)
Left over rib eye with saute'd chanterelles in a chardonnay reduction, and a bottle of Guinness Extra also is on the b'fast menu. Life she is good.

Hope to find a bunch more chants, found a bag of 'em yesterday in a different area. Tough season here, quite dry, but no complaints. I do well no matter the weather, and I totally credit it to always giving away many pounds of what I find. Hope they let me in the beer store, I even can't stand my now very ripe woods clothes. Luckily ticks hate them too!

See ya inna bit with a big thirst for sure, and hopefully a new beer to cure it.

Good morning Doc and rise and shine NBS.

Thank you for the usual positive start of the thread, as the news coming from El Paso, TX and Dayton, OH are... heartbreaking.

I love LA too. I visited the Universal Studios/Hollywood/Venice and enjoyed the city overall back in 2012. Los Angeles is no doubt a great city if it wasn’t for its horrendous traffic...

So today in my glass is something I have been waiting for for some months now. The new Duvel Triple Hop Cashmere. I’m excited to try it after I read some very good reviews from a couple of Euros WBAYDNers...

I just poured it into its Duvel tulip. As I write this the head and foam has faded almost entirely but as you can see and it’s typical of any Duvel the head was tremendous. It also pours a pretty golden color. Onto the nose now...

Smells lemongrass and some hints of lime and apple. This is a nose friendly beer so to speak and I feel this is going to be a winner to the palate as well.

Taste follow the nose and the flavors of lemongrass, lime and green apple are predominant. Considering its heavy 9,5% it’s a very well balanced, non boozy beer and I love it.

Overall: We’ve got a winner this week, and you are very much encouraged to purchase it, it has only two reviews and eight rating on BA (before I log in mine) so it’s safe to assume this beer hasn’t crossed the Atlantic Ocean yet. Definitely worth it, probably one of the top notch Belgian IPA to this day.

Cheers and see you maybe for a second round. Leave me a seat.

    Good morning NBS
I'm off work for a few days as of 6am here. I saved a new to me tripel to review this morning.
    The review:
11.2oz bottle with 09-01-2020 printed on the bottom of the label poured into a tulip glass at fridge temp 9% ABV. The beer pours mostly bright honey colored amber with quick building off white head. The head recedes slowly to a nice cap. Spotty lacing. The aroma is mild and yeasty, but more barnyard than phenolic. The taste is semisweet ripe fruit and banana with the pale malt coming through mid palate before a drying mildly bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with above average carbonation and a dry finish. Overall, very good. Nothing earth shattering, but nothing wrong either.

I hope to be back after a nap if family activities provide time. Enjoy the new beer in your glass today BA!

Good morning New BSers! Well, it's a dry day here in NW PA, thus far. Mrs. Lizard and I just returned from a two-week driving tour of the areas of New England we had not previously visited - VT, NH, ME. That cuts me down to three states I haven't yet visited - HI, ID, NV, although the cost/benefit ratio means I'll probably not make HI before the termination of my beer-cation years.
Doc - congrats on successfully entertaining the grandkids! I personally think grandparent/grandkid relationships work better than parent/kid relationships because grandparents don't try to fix their (perceived) failures through the kids.
Well, today is the first Sunday back and I'm celebrating with today's NBS entry:

Received from @jdell15 in NBS BIF #9. Reviewed 8/4/19. Thanks Jacob!
“2017” printed on shoulder in nearly microscopic yellow numbers. Stored at 42 degrees and served at 54 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
    Appearance – 3.75.
First pour – Dark brown, slight haze.
Body – Dark brown/black, opaque. When held to the light, still opaque.
Head – Small (Maximum 1.5 cm, aggressive center pour), brown, fizzy, medium density, gone in a few seconds leaving neither cap nor crown.
Lacing – None. Not unexpected in a 15% ABV brew!
Aroma – 4 – Vanilla, rum. Moderately strong and lasts.
Flavor – 4.25 - Rum, vanilla extract, chilis, wood (but more like poplar than oak, i.e. less tannins and vanillin), very weak coffee, no coconut, no hops, no dimethylsulfide, no diacetyl.
Palate – 4 – Full, creamy, soft carbonation.
Impression and interpretation – 4 – No head, no lacing, burns (alcohol + chilis) all the way down but ignites a curiously mild gastric warming. Flavor is overpowered by the heat. Otherwise, pretty good.
    Rating 4.09, rDev -9.9%.

I continue to think Prairie Artisan is an over-rated brewery, at least in terms of the BOMB! stuff - it seems to me that the goal is somewhat of an endurance test - how much chili can you stuff into a beer and still have people drink it. I dropped out a long time ago.

Smell tangerine, apricot, mango, and grapefruit rind. 3.75

Good morning, New Beer Sunday friends and family! I'm in town this weekend, so I'll be joining you all once again for my favorite thread. :grinning:

I did hit the streets yesterday (no, not with a red handkerchief, you sickos), knocking out a 5k - exactly one week after last Saturday's marathon. I don't want to let my progress go to waste, and if I decide to ever run a second marathon (if), I've got a goal, and even a target date in mind.

Today's focus, however, is an impending family visit: my mom is coming up for a few days, bringing the kids with her, so I'm pretty excited about that! Nothing quite as exciting planned as @lordofthewiens had in store with his family, as I'm not taking off work while they're here, but just seeing them is good enough.

Anyway, you're not here to catch up on my personal life: we are all here for new beer! And boy, do I have a doozy this morning. Continuing a trend where he sends me beer that I should, by all rights, have been able to more easily get my own hands on (plenty of New England firsts when I lived in New England, for example), @JayORear sent me a couple of cans of perhaps my most highly anticipated beer in a long time: Bamburana. Surely, this can only disappoint, right?

Ummm .... in a word, no. In two words, hell no.

In six words: oh my gawd what the fawk?

That's literally what I said out loud (with only my dog around to hear) when I took my first big whiff (hints of brandy were all I got during the pour). I'm not the first BA to describe this thing as unique, but at the risk of sounding unoriginal, this thing is fucking unique.

The Amburana wood staves add a character similar to that in Cigar City's Xbalanque Huna variant, but with more strength and spice - perhaps it's the way they meld with the double barrel aging, or the added fruit. Whatever the cause, this thing smells like every delicious dessert you've ever imagined, all at once (well, every savory and sweet dessert; there's no citrus or berry here; keep it focused).

The taste is equally impressive and wide-ranging. Both barrels are present; neither are dominant. The fruit is noticeable; Amburana and oak are noticeable; the heavy amount of roasted malt provides a consistent base throughout the sip.

The feel is less full-bodied than, say, Ten-FIDY, FIS, or Speedway Stout, but it's unbelievably gulpable - not only a word I just made up, but a tactic one should not attempt with a 12.2% ABV stout! This thing is dangerously delicious and easy to drink - think Heady on steroids. And a completely different style of beer. Whatever.

Rating this thing is difficult, because it does what it does tremendously well ... but there's virtually no analogue for it. The closest is, naturally, Xbalanque, but this thing has added fruit, is double barrel aged, and at least according to the can, no added spices. It's a different beer.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2681/382422/?ba=Roguer#review
4.6 / +2.9% (cracks my top 50, which is pretty damn tough to do these days)

Perhaps what blows my mind the most is that, for most breweries (Cigar City included, with DBA Huna as an example), this would have been an extremely limited release: brewery-only, anniversary edition, high price, no distro. Think about it: a 12.2% imperial stout, double barrel aged, with fruit added, and aged with Amburana wood spirals. That sure as hell sounds like hype/trade/whalez bait to me!

Instead, this was released in four-can packs with relatively wide distro. It reminds me of BA Ten-FIDY: Oskar Blues could have made that thing damn limited, and instead they made it widely available, and somehow made it exceed everyone's sky-high expectations.

Well done. Very glad I have another can to revisit later on.

Thanks so much yet again, Jay. For those who don't know Jay (he's a frequent visitor but rare poster on this thread), he embodies everything to which a BA should aspire. He really taught me the ropes when I was new here. I've established my own reputation, in my own right, over the last 6 1/2 years (holy shit, it's been that long!), but if I hadn't had such solid mentorship and friendship from Jay and others (like Corey, Jeff, Dave, Jack, Maria, and too many others to mention, honestly), there's no way this community would still hold such a place in my life.

Cheers all, and while I hope (but honestly doubt) you have something equally mind-blowing in your glass today, more importantly, I hope this forum - and this thread, in particular - brings you joy and camaraderie.

A Helles of a good time!

What is better than a Helles on a hot summer day? Two Helles beers on a hot summer day.

I have had a number of beers from Von Trapp Brewing (Dunkel, Vienna Lager, Pilsner) but for the first time today I will be drinking their Helles beer. I will be conducting a side-by-side taste test along with a longtime favorite of Sly Fox Helles Golden Lager.

    Sly Fox Helles Golden Lager

Let’s first discuss to old standby of Sly Fox Helles Golden Lager. Sly Fox Brewing opened up in 1995 and in my opinion they really came into their own when they hired Brian O’Reilly as their head brewer in 2002 (not that the beers were ‘bad’ prior to then). Brian just seemed to have a great touch in brewing lagers such as Helles, Pilsners, etc. Even though Brian has left Sly Fox to be a co-owner of Mainstay Brewing his many years at Sly Fox has left a great heritage of brewing knowledge and talent at Sly Fox Brewing. Below is how this beer is discussed on the Sly Fox website:

    “Helles Golden Lager

    German-style Lager

    11.4 OG18 IBUs4.9% ABV

Sly Fox Helles Golden Lager German-style Lager

A German-style golden lager brewed with imported German Pils malt and Saaz and Hallertau hops. This light-bodied beer offers a gentle, dry finish. A perennial favorite in the Sly Fox pubs and our brewer's go-to session beer.”

I recently spoke to the manager of the Sly Fox Brewpub (Phoenixville, PA) and he informed me the Helles is the number 1 selling beer for Sly Fox. This is quite a noteworthy feat considering that the majority of craft beer drinkers seem to go gaga over super hoppy beers, barrel aged beers, pastry stouts,… these days.

    Von Trapp Helles

As I already made mention above I have had a few Von Trapp lagers already which for my palate varied from excellent to good; basically in this order – Dunkel, Vienna, Pilsner. I have high hopes they can brew a quality Helles as well.

Below is how Von Trapp discusses their Helles on their website:

    “Golden Helles

    4.9% ABV 20 IBU | 6-Pack Bottles | 12 oz.6-Pack Cans

From the German word for “Bright”, our golden lager displays a floral hop aroma with a bready malt balance. Traditional in style, Helles is brewed with pilsner malt to produce a dry, snappy finish while Perle and Tettnanger hops create a spicy, herbal hop aroma. The result is an incredibly clean, yet complex, lager.”

Well, all of this typing has worked up a powerful thirst; LET’S DRINK!!!!!

Served in my Spiegelau Lager Glasses:

    Appearance:

Sly Fox Helles Golden Lager: Straw colored with a white head.

    Von Trapp Helles: same

    Aroma:

Sly Fox Helles Golden Lager: There is a Pilsner malt aroma of sweet-ish but some breadiness as well.

Von Trapp Helles: Mostly an herbal-like smell but there is a bit of bready malt in the background.

    Taste:

Sly Fox Helles Golden Lager: The flavor follows the nose with sweet-ish Pilsner malt flavor. There is a low-moderate bitterness.

Von Trapp Helles: The malt flavor is more prominent here (compared to the nose). The herbal aspect is more in the background. There is a low-moderate bitterness.

    Mouthfeel

Sly Fox Helles Golden Lager: Light-medium bodied with a dry finish.

    Von Trapp Helles: same.

    Overall

Sly Fox Helles Golden Lager: Very Good.

Von Trapp Helles: Good to Very Good.

I enjoyed drinking both of these beers but Sly Fox more closely represents what I think a Helles should be with the malt aspect being front and center.

    Cheers!

It's funny you should say that, Mr. O. I used to trade for Bomb! back in the wax-cap days - it was the only beer that I'd had before, that I would still seek out in trades, I loved it so much (I'm the #1 Bomb! consumer on Untappd, even though I started drinking it before I joined the app .... ).

Buuuut .... I don't feel it has that much heat, especially now. One of the things I loved about Bomb! was the moderate heat and wonderfully green vegetal notes from the ancho chilies, and it's something I feel is sadly lacking ever since their distro went so much wider. I definitely don't find it overly hot; many, many spice beers carry much more heat, while still being palatable (not everything needs to be Habanero Sculpin :grinning: ).

That said, the Bomb! series is still clearly an over-the-top lineup, and quite on purpose (the OG Bomb! started as a joke according to the brewers). Sometimes, there perhaps is too much going on - but for me, too much heat is never the problem.

    I knew I liked you.

To me, Bomb! changed when Chase wasn’t an influence on it anymore. (Because for a little bit after he sold PAA, he was still around. But then he left altogether after starting American Solera)

And it’s not been the same since. The peppers are muted compared to what they used to be and don’t offer that green vegetal note anymore. (Which I think separated it from a lot of other pepper stouts)

    Cheers my Bomb! friend.

Bamburana was the first in a loooong time. I bought close to a case and I am having so much fun handing them out just to hear the reactions of friends, family, and co-workers. Hello NBS! After last week, when @cjgiant & @Lingenbrau were hyping up this beer, I’m going to try it this week. (Just kidding guys, it’s been on my wishlist for years)

Sent from the generous gent. @TheGent

    Beer: Rusty Nail (2018)
    Brewery: Fremont (Seattle, WA)
    ABV: 14.5%
    [IMG]
Pouring from a bomber bottle into a whiskey/tumbler glass, this beer pours out like a stream of coffee. It forms in the glass black with a bright brown highlighted rim. It wanted to form a crown of caramel bubbles on the pour, but never could muster it.

The nose carries in a bourbon barrel that wants its presence known. It shows dark fruit; raisins, dates and plums alongside a dry oak, light leather and vanilla tannins. The cinnamon is at the party, but deciding if it wants to dance yet.

And with one sip, the cinnamon jumps off the wall to dance, providing an ever so slight spicy tingle. It doesn’t take long for the barrel to come back in with its dark fruit. Loads of chocolate paints the background and stays throughout. I think the licorice adds to the overall taste, but it’s not something that would be picked out if not noted. The only time I’m able to tell it’s there is maybe on the finish with a little lingering candy sweetness.

The 14.5% ABV seems like an 8 or 9%, it’s very soft and subtle, which is very impressive for how evident and prominent the barrel is throughout. It’s very well integrated in there with no booze showing through. Cinnamon bark provides a nice, slight tingle throughout. I would put this at medium bodied, and if it was a little thicker my rating on the feel would be perfect.

Overall, this isn’t a beer that is going to obliterate your mouth with flavor. It sits back, and slowly shows you beautiful aspects throughout its entirety. Very well made, balanced & integrated. It honestly reminds me of something Bells would make. In the sense that, it might leave you wanting a little more of a certain aspect at given points, but it definitely won’t leave you saying it wasn’t perfectly balanced.

Have I “Craig’d” this post yet?

Huge thanks Anthony for the chance to try this!

Cheers NBS, I can’t wait to see what you bring to the share!

I've been fortunate enough to have a bunch of those "a ha!" moments, most recently with Bamburana, but also recently with Fremont's The Gauntlet - my #5 rated beer of all time. Other "a ha!" moments for me include: Enjoy By, Westmalle Tripel, BCBS, Bomb! ... not sure if there have been many others, really.

It's a shame, too, because - like you - I really felt those peppers made Bomb! stand out, and not just from heat.

Thankfully, Mexican Cake seems to still carry plenty of heat without being overwhelming, and it's not that difficult for me to get shortly after release (although no variants). Most recently, I had a beer over in Missouri that was made with jalapeno and serrano peppers, and while the BA and Untappd ratings were super low, I freaking loved it - because of the heat, and all of the pepper flavor (serranos are among my favorite peppers for flavor).

    Cheers!

    look: 4.5 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.75 | overall: 4.5

Jet-black body; thick, creamy head; sticky rings of foam step down the glass. Outstanding olfactory blend of caramel, vanilla, cocoa; a sense of dark roasted coffee. Exquisite flavor mixture; heavy sweetness immediately turns into a mild cherry flavor and bourbon barrel presence; milk chocolate and cocoa; dark roasted grain char; finishing with a cherry and chocolate sweetness. Heavy body; thick and velvety; sludgy; amazing residual sugar texture; alcohol heat counterbalancing the overall sweetness.

What a monster of a beer! The brewery has done a fine job of balancing the flavors and mouthfeel elements. It is always a pleasure (and a rarity) to have such a high ABV beer sporting a luxurious and lasting head. It's a cliché to note beers as having depth, balance, and complexity, but, damn, if this beer doesn't meet those descriptors. Outstanding!
    --------
It is always a pleasure to discover an incredible newly released beer.

I don't know to what extent Avery Brewing Company distributes its beers, but for any fans of Oskar Blues / Cigar City's 'Bamburana' or Prairie's Bomb! beers varieties or even Goose Island's BCB beers, or Founder's breakfast stout offerings (and I'm sure there are other like-styled breweries and beers that I failed to mention), should seek this one out.

What a rich and robust beer, and with an ABV that can definitely gently toast your brain pan.

Yes, indeedy. Lovin' me some high octane, barrel aged mind juice this beautiful Sunday morning...
