I like KBS and most of Founders' malt forward beers. I stopped buying them after the racism/discrimination suit. I am sure I'm in the minority (no pun intended) on this, but that's my contribution to Founders languishing on shelves.

Quick, over simplfied partial answer: When it appears on BA beers of Fame List.

Or, in retrospect, one muses, "that went from hype to legacy pretty quick, huh".

Yep, and a potently good measure if we could figure out how to capture that moment in the form of data.

It's been said and will repeat it--you have defined the concept of hype.

I have had just about every KBS release and definitely every CBS. Sure some variation but remain great solid brews the only major change has been availability and the parallel rise of competition.

The fact that you find disappointment in its increased availability is your issue, not the beer's.

If I remember correctly, you were a big Nelson fan? I can whole heartedly say that I have never reproduced that experience after the original Alpine sold out ( with a few cases driven cross country by a someone who visited his brother her in NC from San Diego). It was singularly that great to me.

I would go the the proverbial ends of the earth to reproduce it. I am. confident it would hold up.

I have heard that the original brewery is brewing it again but yet to find someone who has had it to let me know how good it is.

To me, variants destroy a beers legacy.

Once they come, the regular version is never seen as the same.

The only thing that I am disappointed in is watching great beers gather cobwebs.

    #1. Its not 2013
    #2. You live in California

My point is time doesn't stand still. And rarity still drives what gets thought of as "legendary". Disagree, would you call Sierra Nevada Pale Ale legendary? I would, but I not basing that on having to trade for it, more on how influential it was, including on many of the brewers that many of us admire.

And you live in California, with all the great local beer being produced, how could you be surprised that people are passing up KBS. The clear recent trend us toward small batch local beer.

    Welcome California in 2019

Outside of Bottle Logic, I cant think of a local brewery that brews Stouts as good as CBS or KBS. I think people definitely buy those two beers here, but it’s just that Founders has brewed too much in my opinion and oversaturated the market. They are also too pricey in my opinion. Cheers.

So this is a guy I would love to have beer with. I promise I could get you excited about beer again, and we could start with SN Pale Ale.

I thought some of the BA speedway variants, like Islander Joy, were pretty great. MT does some interesting things, had some Horus, this year that wasn't bad, but hey, it is subjective. Don't get me wrong, I won't pass on KBS or CBS. But to claim BL is the only game in town that can compete with Founders, is probably not the majority oppinion.

This thread is an interesting read but this post kind of made me laugh. 2017 CBS is still sitting on shelves here, I know at least 2 shops that would love for this guy to come buy some bottles.

I think what founders is doing with KBS and CBS is actually building their legacy. They haven't ruined the beers (KBS definitely has batch variation, as you will get with any product that relies on ingredients like coffee and chocolate and time in a spirit barrel. They blend spirits from different barrels for a reason it's a very variable and unique product) they are still great products and they are now fully available. They have production/allocation issues to sort out but I think a big part of whatever legacy a beer like KBS has will involve its relative availability.

Now, you wanna talk about ruining a beers legacy. What did those clowns at GreenFlash do? There was a time when GF bombers/4 packs were a staple of my beer purchases. And if they still tasted like they did originally they would still be staples in the fridge (in all fairness I haven't gotten up the gumption yet to try the new new GF stuff, fool me once and all that jazz). I never had OG alpine beers but I haven't really been impressed with any of the ones I've tried post GF and old heads assure me they lost a few steps. So I would say that's a truly ruined legacy
Whatever Stone is doing these days also feels like a sullied legacy..."You are Not Worthy...of buying our legendary, trail blazing beers, just this derivative garbage we made spitefully chasing a new beer trend." Just sell me some fucking Old Guardian and bring back actual Ruination

I think you destroy your legacy when you change the recipe.

Yes, I’m looking at you, Zombiedust.

And thanks for the musical inspiration, @chipawayboy!

Great thought! And is it possible that as we age, our taste buds change too, which may affect how we perceive the beer?

Some of is a money factor and (I hate this acronym) FOMO. Do I pay $24 for a 4 pack of KBS? A beer that I've had several times. Or do I spend $10 on this new beer I've heard good things about? An $7 more on this other hyped beer? Hmmm...$17 on 2 new great beers or $24 on a great beer that I've had before.
