Are we talking Elder or Younger? There's a pretty big difference.

I have several IIPA's I'd choose over the Elder, but only one (Heady Topper) I'd choose over the Younger. Both the Plinys are still world-class IIPAs, though.

Hoppin Frog Hop Dam Triple IPA - a little bit of a different beast but I enjoy this more.

I could not agree more. I find Pliny the Elder and Head Hunter to be very similar, and in fact I prefer Head Hunter (although they're both solid). HH is currently my go-to on any given night.

I've head Pliny, Head Hunter, White Rajah, Heady Topper, Stone Enjoy By, Stone R10, Kiwi Rising, HF Riwaka, HF Society & Solitude #4 and #5, Alpine Nelson, Lawson's, among so many others.

And you know what my favorite IPA of all is?

The great IPA brewed closest to me: Kane Head High. Because among great IPA's, we're splitting hairs, and best one will ALWAYS be the freshest one you can get your hands on. Freshness is so insanely critical to hoppy beer that it's not even fair to compare them all unless you've had each one straight off the bright tank.

It was from the bottle last thursday was the first one I had...I had them open the box for me in the back. I have like 4 more which will be drank in the next week or so.

It is very good I just dont think it was as good as the week old pliny I had 11 days ago. Ive drank some of the best ipa/diipas in the last 2 weeks.

    Here is the list:

    1: Heady
    2: Abner
    3: S&S # 5
    4: Pliney
    5: Susan
6: Blind Pig/ Maine Beer co Lunch (they taste the exact same to me)
    7: Sculpin
    8: Kiwi Rising
    9: Lawsons Hopzilla
    10: Daisy Cutter

These are all very very very good beers but the two bottles of Kiwi I had were not as good IMO.

whoever said hop notch needs to get their palet checked. It isnt even close.

HH and Pliny are totally different beers. Pliny is more citrus where HH is almost like a fresh hop beer with lots of floral notes (and way more bitter). To each his own, but I would take Pliny over HH, and take a bunch of IPA/DIPA's over both of them.

    That's quite the list...

To each his own. I don't deny that I have an obsession with Kiwi hops lately. All those west coast hop varitals are so 2008...

Not a huge fan of Elder. Its on tap here in Philly often and I pass a lot on it. Younger is amazing though.

I have a fresh 4 pack of Head Hunter in my fridge right now along with a case of Columbus IPA and pale ale. I also have a few White Rajah left. Never had the Head Hunter before. In my opinion if fresh:

Columbus IPA> White Rajah.......really a different style of IPA to compare,I love WR but it can be a bit too fruity sometimes. Columbus IPA is pretty perfect if you ask me.

Need to do a taste test of all this week. The pale ale was ok but nothing to write home about. I still nee to revisit that one.

Wish I had access to all of these beers on regular basis.

    Have a great holiday

    Enjoy

Yea the only reason I was able to get half of them was my 11 hour trip to VT and back. Wish I could have stayed longer and went to lunch where there was a tap take over from Lawsons.

And it was my bday a few weeks ago so I made sure I timed my trades accordingly

I really liked Pliny the one time I tried it. I can't think of too many that I definetly liked more but I've never had anything from HF, Alpine, or Lawson's. I enjoyed Heady more but to me it isn't even real life. It's more like a cartoon of an IIPA and I mean that in the best possible way. It's like drinking pure hop flavor that somehow isn't incredibly bitter.

Haven't had PtE unfortunately, but I have to say it would have to be absolutely STELLAR to top Heady. So good.

Only thing i've had that has really competed with HT is Founders Harvest...the wet hops tasted SO fresh in that one, makes my mouth water thinking about it.

I have a special place in my heart for Pliny, and I believe it was once the best IPA around. Now, like many great champions, it has been surpassed by many beers, including, but not limited to, Heady Topper, Double Sunshine, Abner, Zombie Dust. Pliny set the bar for others to strive. I will always respect Pliny and Russian River.

I am probably bias because I live 10 miles away from Fatheads but I prefer Headhunter to Pliny. Don't get me wrong, you would have to hit me over the head with a cattle prie to get either out of my hand but HH by a nose...pun intended. Best smelling beer in the world...fresh batch out of the tap=******ed.

This is an accurate description. It's almost a myth until you have it in your hand/mouth. When I tried it for the first time I couldn't believe how ridiculously good it was. It was hard to get back to drinking anything else once I ran out :slight_frown:

What is there to discuss? You think HH is better than Pliny. That's your opinion and you're entitled to it. I prefer Pliny, but both are great. I think Boneyard Hop Venom is better than both of them.
