When I was Indiana we all hated on Sun King because their prices are high and their beer isn't that great. A lot of places charge a high price but at least some of them have a good reputation. It all started when Grapefruit Jungle (one of their IPAs) got decent reviews on here. Now it's a big release every year and they charge an absurd amount for it.

Agreed. The folks on this website usually have some respect for the OG brewers, but on Facebook, Twitter, etc. you have the attention-seeking bros and bro-ettes posturing to the crowd and things get bad fast.

EDIT: So, like people will post #linelife photos of them at some 2-year old brewery getting some milkshake IPA that might explode on them, and then comment on a post about Victory about how bad Victory is.

There's one here on the shoreline that is always packed but people openly admit that they go there for the ambiance and the scene not the beer itself, which is meh compared to other options in the state.

I live in Greenville, SC. I think people here would buy mule piss on draft if they knew it was locally brewed, or if it had a Clemson University logo on it!!

In real life? None. But I'm not that plugged in to the beer scene in my little world.

Obviously here in the BA.com world, there are several breweries that get $h•! upon, but the one that stands out in my mind is Samuel Smith. I didn't get why until visiting England myself, but I at least get it now. I'd still suggest Samuel Smith's beer isn't that bad, but there's definitely better in the English pale ale world.

Does anyone care to place a wager on my answer? I don't speak for the community; however, I speak for myself. I might actually have one of their overrated IPAs this evening in the WBAYDN forum. I can already sense my disappointment. Haha!!!

That maybe right seeing how the owner also owns the pizza place next door.

Nice. I know where to take all of my Beer Karma to place bets. I'll talk to the 1 and only guy sitting at the corner in the taproom with the little black book.

Granite City is a unique beast. The wort is made in Ellsworth, IA, then shipped all over the country to the "brew pubs" where some "brew manager" dumps in the yeast. They have patents and special allowances to do this. I have had a decent time at some of their locations, but you can probably imagine the limitations and inconsistencies this business model creates.

Interesting. I was in Bloomington around this time from '08-'14. I thought Sun King had a good to above average reputation--known for very clean beer. They won some awards early on for their Scottish (Wee Mac). Led the way on the can revolution. They also had a happy hour at the brewery where you could sample a pints worth of beer for free (or more if you simply used your DDs tokens). One of my first ever trades on here was to someone who wanted a bunch of Sun King stuff. Grapefruit Jungle debuted, I think, in 2013. It was/is expensive and probably overhyped, but I never thought of their regular lineup as particularly expensive. It was moreso just boring and I was pretty quickly tired of Osiris taking over so many taps.

Detroit - Atwater comes to mind first. Not a bad brewery by any means(now). They improved quality last few years, and got a new head brewer. I think the notorious reputation carried on through the recent years, and people just did not care to try most of their new recipes.

Honestly if I had to offer up a sacrificial brewery to the thread that craft beer folks murmur about negatively, I would have to add Hopparazzi (right around the corner from Bottle Logic) to the list. Their beer is marginally ok homebrew at best with nothing dialed in and it seems like they want you to celebrate their efforts rather than give constructive criticism, and they have a fan base of surly salt o the earth types who tell you to go back to whatever brewery you came from. It's like an episode of the twilight zone there. No offense to the owners and staff as a whole but bad beer is bad beer even if you're a really nice guy.

I went there once. Their sours were syrupy sweet. Nice people, though!

Bend: Probably Cascade Lakes (old, boring) or Craft Kitchen & Brewery (just bad).

10 Barrel of course gets shit on but it's not because of the quality of the beer.

For my own community, I'll reply with anecdotes, or whatever:

    1. New kids on the block that are un-established (give them time): Makers, Elation
    2. Established breweries that don't immediately follow trends: Coelacanth (has a huge following though)
    3. Granddaddy/oldtimer brewery where most brews are meh, and that's it: O'Connor (there, I said it)

Man, I want to bite right on that hook, but I love the growing beer scene here near to Everett, and I think people should just try'em all and see what THEY think. If I dump on a brewery or two that I think is really quite bad, then I increase the chance of someone never trying them and that place closing.

Rent is too high out here and places of all kinds close all the time, places I liked but just not enough to go back to more than once in a year then they're gone when I'm about to.

Those places I could respond to appear to have repeat customers too and I'd hate to be a part of taking their favorite hangout (their Cheers - for those old enough to get me) away.

I will rate a place I visit and help contribute to the community in that way, but I try to find the good in each place as well.

Aww that's too bad I've actually been to the Gilded otter years and years ago on a road trip through Vermont. Their stuff wasn't amazing but it was good and the location was nice. I still have the glass!

    Chicago, IL: Mikerphone.

They've somehow become the go-to reference for hype driven pastry stouts, hazy IPA's and kettle sours...and bad release strategies and poor reactions to infected beer.

Plenty of other breweries do ALL of the above in this city, but for whatever reason they have the "kick me" sign on their back...and they certainly haven't always been impeccable community pillars (see: we will finally acknowledge our oxidization issues...now that they are solved!).

Keep in mind, this is only among the hyper nerdy Chicago folks (like me) who obsessively talk about beer, especially on this site.

They seem to be doing fine financially, so I doubt they care at all.

There's an old saying: "How do you make a small fortune after starting a brewery?"

    "Start with a large fortune."
