Short version of the story is I went to the brewstore and got some S-04 and it slipped out of the box and I found it on the floor of my car 24 hours later. The car is tinted but it was outside and not in my garage, so it got hot in there. Probably 100 degrees considering the windows were up and I didn’t drive that day

Think it’s dead or is dry pretty safe?

    Thanks in advance

Any other thoughts or personal experiences? Need to figure out if I’m committing to the hour drive to the brew store or not

You should proof your yeast. It is called proofing the yeast for this very reason.

If you see the yeast bubbling and showing signs of life after re-hydrating with warm water (about 95F) then it is good to use. Healthy yeast should become creamy, almost like a peanut butter and it will have a very distinct yeasty aroma.

    Cheers.

@Kraz Proofing also requires some sugar. There are lots of descriptions and videos out there.

You'll have to do it anyways if the yeast is dead so i would especially if your doing 5 gals or just get some bottles at the store that were bottled conditioned and make a starter.

I'm gonna be the guy that says it should be fine...dried yeast is tough stuff...freeze it, expose it to heat...the stuff lives on it its shell. No back up sachet though just in case? I always keep at least some dried yeast on hand as my plan B. @Brewday suggestion of a bottle conditioned beer would be a good plan B if you don't have an extra sachet.

Dave, I agree with you here.
And I agree with you here as well. I always have a sachet (or two) of 'extra' US-05 in my refrigerator. Depending upon the beer style this Plan B may not be ideal but US-05 will always produce beer which is better than not.

    Cheers!

I just want to point out for other newbies out there, if this had been a vial of liquid yeast it would probably be lost. Liquid yeast will start to die at 110F. Would anything be left alive? Maybe, but not enough cells to pitch for sure.
