Hey, I'm travelling to Portland/Seattle in October from the UK for a week and am looking to do an Ultra Marathon that is near Tillamook on the 2nd day.

My query is, should I look for accommodation in Tillamook so I can spend a bit of time there or is it really only De Garde that's worth the trip? (so get there and then get back to Portland to properly celebrate the race there?)

I was planning on spending a day at the coast anyway but not sure where the best places to visit are really and might just do that later in the week.

    Thanks for any advice.

Go back to Portland, there's nothing in Tillamook but cheese.

As a local, I always make a beeline back to pdx after a visit to dG. However, if you've never been, I would recommend hitting up the Pelican outpost in Tillamook. Also, it's a bit of a drive to get up there, but I would still recommend heading up to Astoria and visiting Ft. George and Buoy. It's a pretty drive, Astoria is a cool little town, and the beer at Buoy and Ft. George is quite decent.

    Have fun.

From an ultra runner to another, there’s not much else out there other than DG. The drive out there and back is enjoyable though.

BTW, what race are you doing out there?

ah, the oregon coast ultra! i wish i could have signed up for this years race.

I'll go ahead and say all the people who have responded above are crazy, or i'm crazy, because I could think of so many reasons to stick around Tillamook for one night. if you are down to camp, it's really an amazing stretch of coastal camping. I've always wanted to bike pack from Astoria through Yachats... one day. Plenty of established campsites, yurts, and cabins. Tillamook has Cape Lookout (reservations better made in advance). If you want more specific recommendations, DM me.

Thanks for the tips, its actually the Elk-Kings 50km trail race in Tillamook that I am planning on doing. I think the thought of going out drinking in Portland after doing my first ultra is more appealing than trying to find something to do.

I'll certainly head back out to the coast though at a later point, just need to decide where!

I’ve done the Oregon Coast 50K and highly recommend it - the course is fantastic and Yachats Brewing is across the street from the start/finish.

Elk King’s course looks legit. Ran a Go Beyond race this past May at their Stumptown 50K in Forest Park - they put on a good race. Between Go Beyond, Rainshadow Running, and Daybreak Racing you cant go wrong in finding a great course around Portland.

Yeah the ascent put me off, I am doing Berlin Marathon 2 weeks before so not sure my legs would cope with 2 peaks!

I genuinely didn't plan to do one. Wanted to see Portland anyway but then just happened to look at local races and bingo! Beer and running is my perfect holiday so this is the jackpot!

You should definitely stay on the coast since you'll already be out there and will still get to spend time in Portland...there are so many beautiful places to stay within an hour of Tillamook.

If you want to stay within 15 minutes of Tillamook, look for a place in Oceanside. Netarts is nice too and a little cheaper than Oceanside. Load up on all the good local nw beers while in Portland or Seattle and drink them on the beach!

I like Pacific City a lot too but it's about 30 minutes away from Tillamook and probably more expensive. It's so much fun trying to run as fast as possible down the sand dune!

Hi again, just revisiting this as my trip starts this weekend. 1 more question, is De Garde really worth the visit or am I likely to be able to get their stuff in Portland in places?

If you want de Garde bottles you have to go to Tillamook. The only other spot you may find bottles is at Arch Bridge Taphouse in Oregon City (they currently have four bottles listed as available on their website). It's unlikely you'll see de Garde on tap around Portland - occasionally Belmont Station or Beermongers, but those are usually special events.

As far as is it worth it...that's much harder to answer. I'm a huge fan and would say yes, but if wild is something you just drink if it's there and it's not something you love, it's probably not worth the trip. Very difficult for someone else to answer that.

Oh, you can probably find the Spring or Summer Amusement bottles (Block 15/de Garde collab) around Portland. Belmont Station has both according to their website and I've seen them other places as well.

Completely agree with this statement, but would expand on it a bit.

Arch Bridge almost always has bottles of de Garde available, but selection and number of bottles can vary wildly. I've seen them have as many as 8 different bottles and as few as two. I would also add that dG fruited sours seem to be extremely popular and tend to sell out fairly quickly when AB gets them in. It's also not unusual for AB to have something of theirs on tap, and on occasion they may even have a limited release bottle or two that is only available for onsite consumption.

That being said, if you're a big fan of dG stuff, it would be my recommendation that you visit both dG and Arch Bridge. No matter what Arch Bridge has on offer, you almost certainly will be able to obtain beers at dG that won't be available at AB.

    Have fun.

Do you like airplanes, clams, and dairy products (in any combination)? Then DG/Tillamook worth the (relatively, in American terms) short drive. It also locates you nicely to Astoria, and points south (Twist wine [owned by the sister if the Big Man at Russian River] and Pelican, both in Pacific City). If you're not likely to get back soon, go to the coast.

General non-beer-related reminder that if you haven't been to the Oregon coast, it's colder than most people think it is. Probably similar to the coast in the UK. There's a common misconception in the US that all our beaches are like southern California or Florida. In October you're probably looking at temps in the 50s, bring some layers.
