This is kind of dumb, at least let the person buy a bottle or two. Maybe his usual go to store didn't have any. .

Do you know for sure that's what this guy was doing? So if I cannot get something at my local purveyors I don't deserve to get it?

If I wasn't a regular before an incident like that, it certainly wouldn't make me want to become one.

Did he tell the guy what the monthly requirement for purchases were so that he may one day reach the proper status?

They should have sold the dude the beer imo, I don't care if he wasn't a "regular", and what constitutes a regular anyway? But whatever, it's his store his policies I guess.

Being a manager of a local shop in Indy the way I handle stuff is I have about 5-8 regulars that I contact with limited stuff and they have the option to take one or not to. Saving stuff for the people that frequent your store week in and week out are the reason most Beer managers have a job. Just my 0.02
And for what it's worth it puts us Managers in an extremely odd situation, what do you say to the guy who you see every week who asks if you got them and you say you sold them all?
There is an argument for both sides and neither are right nor wrong imo.

Anyone who doesn't agree with the way that manager acted shouldn't be allowed to post on BA.

When a beer store gets two cases, one case, or even two bottles how do you distribute to all the regulars? You can't hook up everyone. Eventually they'll start picking favorites and it comes down to who's sucking the beer guy's D the best for some KBS. Yeah no thanks.

I keep picturing windowless bottle shops that have unmarked doors, yearly dues, members only jackets, secret handshakes and holographic member cards.

I hate it when I drive hours to go to a brewery-only release and then get told at the door to leave because they "Only take care of locals." Oh wait..

A valid argument could be made for either side... The guy should run his business as he sees fit, however the way the manager handled the "non-regular" leaves something to be desired... There are polite ways of turning someone down without being a jerk... The original quote of - "I am holding it in back for our locals, to take care of the people that regularly shop here" - basically means yeah I got it, you can't get none because I don't recognize you... A more civil approach would have been - "Sorry, I did have it in stock but it has either been sold or reserved - Is there anything else that I can help you find?" - That way you acknowledge the truth without being rude and alienating a potential customer... Just my thoughts...

The more I think about it, the more I think it must be really difficult to be a beer manager/buyer and have to deal with these situations on a regular basis. There really is no "winning", it seems like you just have to come up with a system and stick with it.
