Good afternoon NBS and thanks to today's flight team captain @cjgiant for the safe journey to Nebo NC. Upon landing at Fonta Flora I disembarked and immediately tried the Whip-Poor-Whill Wit.
The Earl Grey element is a really nice touch, needs more carbonation, Now back to putting up some firewood on this spectacular weather weekend.
    Cheers all

Poured from a 16 oz can date 06/04019 into the test glass
A - Lite honey color, tepid carbonation , struggles to coalesce, thin ring is all that shows of the effort. Very nice clarity.
S - Orange peel, a bit of coriander, hint of phenol that could be off putting to some, nice grassy herbal thread as well.
T - Wit for sure, nice grain profile, orange and coriander are well balanced, the Earl Grey is a delightful touch with some pepper thread in there.
M - Medium in body, under carbonated makes it a bit slick, the start and finish are earthy and I like that quite a bit
O - The clarity and herbal elements are quite good, increase the carbonation and this offering is a home run. The Earl Grey addition is on point. Worth seeking out

    . Solid black color
...less than medium carbonation with around a medium body. Does have a slight watery feel
... aroma is milk chocolate, alcohol, chocolate milk, chocolate liqueur
...taste for the most part follows the aroma with milk chocolate being upfront. Of all things it reminds me of yoo-hoo which in part is due to watery feel
    ... it's okay but not a repeat for me,especially considering the price[IMG]

So, true story: I stopped by my "local" yesterday because I was in dire need of flavored stouts. I have enough normal imperial stouts on hand, but I really want to age them more, and flavored stouts tend to not need any aging.

I walked out with over a dozen hop bombs, naturally. :flushed:

Third up today, I'm hitting up Foreign Objects with Psychomantic Cult Workship, a 7.5% New Engla .... errr, New American Hoppy Ale, of course.

Foreign Objects long had a trend of releasing filthy-looking beers well worthy of the brewery name. Recently, however, I observed a few in a row that actually looked quite pleasant.

Sadly, this one more than lives up to the name. It's gross, with massive floaties out of suspension, eventually clinging to the side of the glass in huge colonies.

The nose is nice and lives up to Citra and Nelson, but it's restrained.

No such restraint is exercised on the palate. This is juicy, flawless, bursting with hop flavors across the board, and exceptionally drinkable. Every sip I take, I mentally adjust the score up by a few hundredths. I'm finally settled, I think, but damn this is an enjoyable IPA.

Travel? I got too much recently . Three trade shows in the past two weeks also allowed me to experience some fun recreational activities. Red Sox world series trophies in front of the Green Monster, Bahai Temple in my hometown and the Cubs vs the Giants at Wrigley Field. Last night watched the New England revolution beat the Chicago Fire and had a pretty good beer from Treehouse brewing as well

Happy New Summer in the Dark with a Beer in the City Sunday (Week 757)!
"Summer In the Dark" was a film noir festival that used to be held in Albuquerque, NM but seems to have been discontinued. 8=(

Tomorrow at 0730 (Local, EDT), my Summer vaycay ends as School Year (SY) 2019-'20 begins. It was more of a staycay this year as I had major surgery a week after commencement & then spent the Summer recovering & recuperating.

It was time well spent here at Chez Woody, allowing me to winnow through the backlog & assemble lots of brewery horizontals for each week's NBS. For insCANce, this week's foray into Asbury Park, NJ's Dark City B.C., beginning with this aptly-named beer:

@cjgiant, I did not pack my own bag for this trip. Don’t tell TSA. And I’ll agree to disagree with you on Napa Parabola. I thought there was good balance between beer and wine barrel. I also enjoyed the alcohol the barrel brought without the burn bourbon barrels provide.

On to another new to me high abv stout. Non-barreled, that is. Hubbard’s Cave makes some enjoyable flavored imperial stouts in the plus 10 abv range, and this joins the list. I find some of them to be big muddy messes and some are thick big bodied flavor bombs. This falls into the second camp.

It’s labeled 2019-2 and I poured it into my small bowl sized snifter. Dark brown. Very little in the way of thinning colors on the edges. Light tan head, lacing is more in the way of floating tan particulates. Smell is sweet coconut and vanilla over roast malt. Taste can be summed up in one word: sweet. Coconut and vanilla blend really well together, bit of slight bitter unsweetened chocolate notes on the back end. Big body, mouth watering, thicker with a slightly oily feel. Plenty of booze presence. Flavorful, strong and thick, quite enjoyable. Part of the reason I like trying their stouts is because I don’t know if I’m going to get a hit or a miss, so when I get a hit, it’s that much more enjoyable (if that makes any sense).

I got some cds by mail order this week. One was the 20th anniversary of Travis’ The Man Who, the other was Thom Yorke’s Anima. So that’s my choice for the new music with the new beer.

By the way, @cjgiant, what can we use as a flotation device in case of a water landing?

It's time for a little refreshment break from cleaning the garage on this beautiful summer Sunday here in northern NJ.

    Rodenbach Fruitage
I'm not sure what I was expecting here- I mean, Rodenbach has never come close to letting me down- but still, this beer has exceeded it. So, yeah, maybe I was fearing that it was going to be too "dumbed down" and generic for my tastes. But I'll be damned if they haven't struck the perfect balance between casual refreshment and a more sophisticated beverage. I'm loving that woody vinous quality, especially on the finish, that brisk tartness, that hit of tannins to provide just the right amount of structure, the bright fruitiness. And even that's kind of fun to parse- sometimes it's raspberries, other sips it feels like cherry or blackberry. But overall, yeah, it's an easy drinker and not on the same level as their Alexander; but it's not supposed to be. And it feels like Rodenbach made it, if that makes any sense. Lovely! A (4.4).

Mildly cloudy, golden orange body; fine and lively carbonation; very decent white head. Subtle and alluring peach aroma; peach jam; a bit of sour funk. Outstanding sour peach flavor, balanced; tart and tangy; cider. Heavy body; fizzy and acidic; juicy.

This is an incredible peach-centric sour ale, bringing peaches to the forefront across the board.
    ------------
My first beer of the day, an amazing one to start off the day while holed up within the sacred walls of the 'Fortress of Solitude' with 'The Thomas Jefferson Hour' on the radio, a stogie waiting to be fired up, and, naturally, more beer.

Flying. Man, I love the act of flying, especially in small aircraft (fixed wing or rotorary). I believe my first time was taking a brief two-seater helicopter flight around the Ohio State Fair back in the 70s. Then there was the time flying around Coos Bay in an old Cesna and briefly being given control of the plane (I had no idea what I was doing!), and one of my all-time favorite times flying in a Huey over Vandenberg AFB to observe the audio/visual crew recording a Delta II launch (I believe the pilot was trying to make me sick by screaming over the ocean and banking sharply over beach sand dunes, but I love a great roller coaster ride). That was back during my days as a comm/computer inspector on the USAF Space Command Inspector General team.

...hell, commercial flying was okay for a bit, but now, I avoid it at nearly all costs, mainly because of the packed seating and lack of amenities.

But as long as beer is served pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight, I will continue to take to the air if need be.

Then, too, a hot air balloon flight sounds like a lot of fun...

I saw your review and it does seem like maybe we got bottles from different ends of the line or something. If they do a "vintage 002," I'd probably get another bottle and give it a second chance since I do tend to like most of what FW does.

    Another one from @thebeers

    Beer: Sunday Mole Stout
    Brewery: Weyerbacher (Easton, PA)
    ABV: 11.3%

Pouring from a 12 oz. bottle into a PAA glass, this beer pours out with a slick blackness; like the original. However, this one forms a pinky worth of caramel colored bubbles for a crown. They unfortunately don’t stick around too long and don’t leave any lacing in their disappearing act.

The nose brings fudgey chocolate mixing with slight peppers, cinnamon and even thick vanilla bean sweetness. Coffee does show through, with a little less sweetness than the original.

The taste follows the nose well. Brings a thick chocolate that’s reminiscent of a chocolate tootsie pop and then transitions into a pepper and cinnamon sprinkle.Slightly roasty coffee shows itself in near the end. Almost what I would imagine those Mexican candy suckers are like, the ones coated in the cinnamon or peppers.

The mouthfeel is reminiscent to the original in the fact that the carbonation is low and makes it feel still. Nowhere near the booziness in this though, and even with some slight pepper tingle, it seems a lot more approachable.

Overall, I enjoyed this more than the original. I thought it was more balanced and didn’t have the lingering alcohol hit as a distraction.

Thanks again, Arthur & cheers NBS!

Parabola is easily one of my favorite beers of all time, and the fact that I was not disappointed at all in the Napa version may have clouded my judgement. But I seriously thought it was the best beer I’ve had in months, maybe even more than BDCS.

Good Sunday! I took a little trip to Green-land this afternoon, starting with regular Green with lunch, then upshifting to Very Green.

One month old, no signs of erosion. Everything is slightly heightened compare to regular Green. Slightly darker and easier, comparable head and lacing. All fruit aromas, again a little stronger than regular.
There was a little mustiness in the nose.
Noticeably sweeter taste without the whiff of pine that I got from regular. The citrus and tropical notes really ramped up as the glass warmed. Definite sensation of a citrus mouth coating and pineapple aftertaste. Regular Green was a little better suited to the ninety degree weather today.

Pours as black as the night with a huge, dark brown head, which won‘t collapse at all.

The beers aromas are intense - leaden by sugar coated espresso beans and a maple peak. Spicy bourbon is there as well, adding a pleasant depth, consisting of earth, oak, toffee and marzipan. Everything is very well balanced, without any ingredient standing out in particular, creating a very well working nose.

Has a thicker, very soft mouthfeel, with almost no carbonation, leaving a long lasting whipped cream impression on the palate, showcasing the heavier body of the beer perfectly well.

Tastes of toffee, on which the roasted, earthen coffee settles, which then unfolds on the palate with a plethora of sweet, wooden and dryer flavors. Both maple and the barrel add to this initial impression in the best possible fashion, lending an almost chewy, rich and oaken, spice quality. After the swallow, coffee turns drier, maple lingers on and a prominent roasted maltiness rushes over more subtle vanilla.

This is great, because it simply relies on its balance. By doing so, the beers complex flavors are able to unfold perfectly, enriching each other the whole time.
