To see if you can differentiate one beer from another? You know, like wine aficionados sometimes do?

Several times. It's not just wine folks who do that. Pretty standard procedure for all kinds of professional tasters as well.

Here's an example of using the blind taste testing that can help you save money as well.

    The Triangle test.

Been a part of groups recently that did blind tastings with Mexican Cake BA variants and another with the DWTD box set to see if we could discern the barrel treatments. We did not fare well overall at either endeavor.

A group of friends and I do often. Not to pick out individual beers, but to rank them by taste blindly.

This was about 2 weeks ago. Best to worst left to right.

Some we grade more seriously than others. Some we just all grade 1-10.

LOL I don't mean to seem show offy at all, its was the only context under which I had done a blind tasting. The eyes do nothing for the taste of beer and more so the nose so we did a tasting blind and had to be able to identify the style being had. It was fun. I still haven't passed my Cicerone Lv1 test yet, just the Certified Beer Server portion you have to pass first.

Lol, just picking. There’s no way I could pass a blind test, I could only give a thumbs up or down. I’m not very technical.

Did a malt liquor and AAL blind tasting once. It was a small sample but I was 4 for 4. Still proud. :sunglasses:

We used to do these with my bottle share group in Germany. We would use it as an opportunity to guess the style and to pick out things without being influenced by knowing what it was. Loads of fun. Someone actually threw in a non-alcoholic beer at one point - that was actually a tricky one.

One thing I like to do so that I'm not trying to guess what beer is in what glass, and just take them as they come, is to include a glass that's a blend of all the others. I'm usually sticking to only one style when I do that, though.

I like blind tastings a lot actually. I did haze vs Very hazy blind and surprisingly they were almost identical. I have some buddies that did a mini assassin vert blind recently too (14,16,18,19). Bias is an inherent thing that we have to deal with so it’s cool to strip that away and see what our perceptions of the beers are

All the time. As a BJCP judge, about once a month. Also do blind tastings of commercial beer about once every 2 - 3 months.

I try to do them as often as I can, but haven't been able to do it as much lately. Doing DDHFPPA, FPPA, Galaxy FP, Mosaic FP, and Enigma FP blind was a particularly cool experience. And yes, I was able to identify them all.

I hosted a blind tasting of Belgian quads last year with somewhat surprising results. Big hitters like Westvleteren 12, St Bernardus 12, and Rochefort 10 all did well as you might expect. Others like Straffe Hendrik did better than expected and La Trappe was at the bottom. The top one was very surprising...Gulden Draak 9000...whaaa? I think the sweetness may have had something to do with it, but it was still surprising, and I guess that's why you do blind tastings after all.
