I really don't understand why people are so adamant this rare beer chaser would have become a regular customer at this location had he received a bottle.

"Wow, you're store # 12 to give me a bottle today and definitely out of my way so I definitely should come back here for my regular beer purchases." - said no rare beer chaser ever.

I have access to a number of local bottleshops including a new one I until recently ventured into. I was looking to get not necessarily a rare bottle but one that is limited. I want into this place and asked he said they only got a case and it was all spoken for, fine. He then followed up with you should join our email list those on ths list are first notified of release and you can reserve bottles if you are on the list. I happily signed up and to my surprise it came with a discount. Two days later I received an email about a new release, responded got some reserved and he now has a new regular...managers take notice if I had been treated as such I would n very shop there again and tell everyone not to as well you can save rares for regulars and expand your business at the same time

I'm in favor of beer stores treating customers like customers and not like members of an exclusive country club. If you have it and I ask for it, I fully expect you to sell it to me. That's not entitlement; that's the free market. And yes, I might actually become a "regular" (whatever that means) if you don't have some arbitrary, invisible pecking order in place before I even walk through the door, determining what I'm worthy of buying; but I absolutely won't if you do.

More than likely I'm going to get the beer I want; the only question is who's going to sell it to me. There are probably at least a dozen great places to buy beer locally (I don't live in the middle of a cornfield), and I have a long memory for those who refuse to provide service based on a completely arbitrary, and most likely faulty, system of favoritism. Store managers take note.

Honestly, why dont they get it off the truck and put it on the shelf. Then if you go there and its there, you take one. If I am a regular, it's not because you 'hook me up' , it's because you have good prices and a good selection.

I'm impressed that this small bit of information has prompted such grand narratives about the thwarted customer's and localistic manager's respective motives. Kudos, folks, imagination is the most purely human of attributes.

I hope this story ends with all rare beers that inspire such covetousness being loaded onto a rocket and shot into the sun.

Then the question will be, who's the lucky guy who gets to ride the rocket, and is the selection process fair?

It's entirely possible that 1) the guy was new to the area or 2) had never heard of that particular store until that day, or both.

To repeat myself, if I was new in town or had never heard of the place before and got a "greeting" like that, it'd be that last time I visited there.

Well, wonder no more about my post, at least. I never hunt rare/expensive beers. Too many good beers that are easily obtainable and within my budget.

I'm thinking that if a store owner has something in stock that they're only willing to sell to a certain list of people, its probably a better move to say that they don't have it in stock, rather than say they have it but you can't buy it. That way, they take care of their regulars, but don't discourage new customers.

What about people like me... it's 25 minutes to the closest craft beer store..... and it's a small one... thirty minutes to a mid sized one... and 45 minutes to a large liquor store with a big craft beer selection...

I guess I'm really local to no one... they recognize me at the small store... but the other stores see so many more people, I doubt I'm considered local....

The rocket is automated and unmanned, making the selection process fair through its exclusion of everyone.

It will, however, inspire a bunch of Venusian beer enthusiasts to go rocket-chasing.

to prevent hoarding breweries/stores should have a significant mark up on the limited release products. The products can be put out on the shelves; less likely to have shortages. Free market, it works.

This one gave me a good laugh. This story is about me and happened at Vineyard in Plano, il. I don't live 25 miles away, I live about 7 miles away. First off Terry was great and did sell me the BCBCS, he even gave me a tour of his shop, and I purchased $40 in other beer. I'm not a "truck chaser" my friend who works for A distributor and was formally their rep infomed me of this store, I didn't know they sold craft beer until yesterday. This store will now become one of my main beer shops, as I promised Terry.

Wow, so many of you are really adamant this manager should have sold to the guy who was driving all over to scoop up the limited beer.

I guess I'm surprised because I had no idea so many of you drive all over to scoop up the limited beer.

I live in the black hole of good beer, Mississippi. I make a beer run about once a month and I go as far as Steins in New Orleans, or Roof Brothers in KY. I spend a big chunk of money when I go $200-$500. If one of these places held out on me it would be my last trip there. Even though I don't go once a week they know me when I go in. Both of these places is 5 hours away, I'm not local by any means, but I'm not just driving around looking to grab up all I can. I don't think it would be far for them not to sale it to me.
