Had a tulip at Big Fatty's in White River Junction, Vermont. Hazy straw colored with big white head. Smell was of lemony barnyard funk and grassy fields. Taste added a nicely sweet taste to the above with a dry finish. Mouthfeel was briskly refreshing. Even my non beer drinking wife found it pleasant.

New Beer AND Brewery Sunday #2

    Big Sky Brewing

    Ivan the Terrible Imperial Stout

This beer is courtesy of @JayWhitson

It’s the 2017 vintage and I’ve never had it fresh.

As for football, I’m watching the first NFC East game of the day. My team will be playing in the second divisional matchup later this afternoon!

Look: Black and opaque with a light brown, densely packed head. No visible carbonation. A curtain of lacing is left behind as the two finger head from the initial pour disappears. As I drink the beer down there is no lacing left.

Smell: Milk chocolate sweetness and cocoa powder. Earthy and roasty malt aroma. Soft bourbon aroma with some vanilla. Faint meat. As the beer warms up a hint of alcohol shows pleasantly.

Taste: Up front notes of dark chocolate, milk chocolate and slightly sweetened black coffee. Mid palate the beer turns dry with toasted bread and some pithy citrus bitterness. Delicious.

Feel: Low carbonation and dry. Smooth and soft feel. Very light on the palate.

Overall: For 9.5% this beer is insanely drinkable. It’s a really excellent stout. No flavor additions, but chock full of flavor! I truly love a straightforward stout with no added flavors that delivers on all aspects.

The Brew Kettle - Oktofest and White Rajah in Cans

I just moved from Eastern to Western PA on the outskirts of Pittsburgh. While there are plenty of great beers to be had around Pittsburgh, I was excited to be closer to Ohio to be able to get some brews from The Beer Kettle. The other day, I drove 75 minutes into Youngstown, Ohio and procured a few of their beers, including Oktofest (new to me) and some White Rajah in cans, which was just released on 2019-08-27 for the first time.

    The Brew Kettle - Oktofest

Had this today from a 12oz canned on 2019-08-20. My overall score is 4.11.

A - Clear amber with a short light-tan head that drops quickly leaving almost no lace

S - Cinnamon raisin bread. Floral

T - Toasted raisin bread with not-very-sweet pear preserves, earthy spice with a touch of pepper. Good balancing bitterness. Dry finish.

M - Medium body and medium-high carbonation. Smooth at first, then crisp. Refreshing

O - A nice twist on the style. I'll have this again.

While I've had White Rajah numerous times previously, I was psyched to be able to try it from the can. The one I had was delicious but there was a peculiarity about the six pack as you'll see in the photo. Several of us had a sampling and weirdly, one of the three pours (not mine) from the same six pack was much darker than the other two and didn't have the same flavor. It wasn't as fresh tasting and had less citrus and floral flavor and had more malt flavor. What in the world would be the cause of this? I'm speculating that during the new canning process on 2019-08-27, they mixed in an older batch along with a new batch from a different bright tank. Anyone have thoughts on how this may have happened? They all had the same canned on date on the bottom of the cans.

Boulevard Chill Vibes Sour ale with Cucumber ( Gose ), 4.25 ABV, 4.07 overall

Pours bright, effervescent & gold with one finger of pearl colored head. Some head retention, zero lacing

    S: Cucumbers, grassyness

T: Follows the nose, also picking up a little lemon, mint & dryness up front. Tartness, cucumber, a little saltyness & lemon as this warms. Finishes dry with a slight lemon sweetness/tartness & a faded salty cucumber

    MF: Light carbonation, medium body

Love the flavor, drinks too easy, they could've released earlier in the Summer & I would've bought a ton

    Hey everyone what's going on?

Great weekend, I've been out hop picking and adding to secondary, and also drinking some tasty brews.

Much fun, some decent weather for once as well.

Lots of tasty brew out there, and a stroll in the neighborhood long overdue produced some fine goodies.

So what's new for our hero today?

Peekaboo with Mosaic IPA - Astro Lab Brewing

Poured from the crowler into a Spiegelau IPA glass.

Man I still hate pouring out of crowlers, but even so the beer gives a good visual impression. Supper creamy head at first, with a big soft white glow. Thick reaching and creamy four finger controlled head. Lots of retention and cling, thick chunks of pill lacing and swiss cheese bubbles and mountains abound. The body color while in an opaque quality, still has a nice glow, giving off an orange amber shine slightly.

That aroma is pure mosaic, dank pineapple as I like to call it. Large earthy nose, mixing with a tropical pineapple presence, and a touch of spicy quality going on as well. This is giving to mouthwatering pleasures for me it seems. That spicy component seems like another addition, perhaps this isn't a SMASH beer, but I could be wrong. Whatever was done there's a little more hop variety on the nose to me that makes for a real pleasurable feeling.

Palate brings the right notes. Juiced up body with a big washing tropical flavor on first sip. Aims a little wet slightly, but the flavors in the mid palate punch out even to more earth, pineapple, and some real big tangerine is cropping up in the mix here. Aftertaste has a bit of faint flour mouthfeel fine grain quality, but has an excellent spicy tone that is sweetened with an orange character as well. Muted pineapple, which for me is a plus, rounds out for a mixing fruit smorgasborg like quality to the IPA.

Excellent brew, Astro Lab sure keeps bringing the hops that's for sure.

    look: 4.25 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25 | BA Generated Score: 4.23

    Cheers!

Greetings everybody on this fantastic Sunday! I'm so jazzed about the upcoming Giants season starting later this afternoon; we have a lot of young raw talent on this team, and it's going to be a real pleasure watching them develop into what can be something special.

And also, my tomatoes are finally starting to ripen. Yesterday I had what was probably the best tomato I ever grew, a big juicy beet red, sweet and succulent heirloom beefsteak sonofagun, and tonight I can't wait to put some of those nice thick slices on some freshly grilled burgers. It took a bit of time, but these are worth the wait.

Today's first beer comes by way of Japan:
Otaru White, from the Hokkaido Brewery.

On the plus side for this one is how it's made with a tremendous sense of restraint and delicacy. There's a well-woven spiciness about it, and it's impossible to tell what's from the yeast and what's from any possible spice additions. It's also gently fruity, something akin to yellow plum flesh- it's even got that slightly tangy quality. But on the down side it sure could be drier and crisper; the residual sugars are combining with the fruitiness to give an almost grape soda-like feel overriding everything else about the beer. It doesn't rise to the level of obnoxiousness, but I'm still not so crazy about it anyway. Ultimately it's just a pleasant and forgettable B- (3.3).

A very hazy IPA that appears to be a juice bomb. The aroma is fantastic and the grapefruit strong. The grapefruit comes on strong and is really nice. A very smooth and creamy mouthfeel. No bitterness at all. This is a really great example of a juice bomb I read about on these pages. Canned on 07/15/19. Poured into a fancy glass I bought special for these 16 ounce cans that is a Bell's Spiegelau. Works great for IPA's. Special Thanks to @TheIPAHunter

Pale yellow body, mildly cloudy; thick, sculpted head. Strong fruity aroma; peach and pear. Mild cereal grain base flavor infused with an estery backdrop; light bready sweetness. Medium-light body; smooth and soft on the palate; slightly warm; nice balance between low-key sweetness and light dryness.

The strong peach and pear aroma almost seemed off-putting, thinking it would bleed over to the flavor, but the taste was nothing but classic pilsner delicateness and subtlety, strong on the light malt character and nicely complemented with the hop bitterness and mild flavor. This is a most satisfying lager, and I look forward to drinking many more bottles of this beer as time goes on.

L-The beer pours a hazy yellow orange with a 1.5 finger off white head. The head recedes to a thin film with legs of lacing around the glass.
S-The nose leads out large with mosaic. It's somewhere between catty and garlic. The intensity is medium high. Once you adjust to the hops you can pick up some of that mustiness I associate with wheat in the malt bill.
T- The taste here diverges from the nose. The first sip gives you a little fruitiness. You get a little grapefruit flesh and some pith. A touch of the cattiness makes its way in at the back of the sip, but it is mild.
F-The mouthfeel overall is medium to medium full. Its soft and silky clearly showcasing the wheat and oats. Carbonation overall is light. While the finish isn't dry, it still drinks remarkably well.
O- Just a really well put together IPA. It shines in the feel, but is complex enough to keep things interesting.

    3 Fonteinen Perzik Geel

Pours a glowing golden color with no real head to it.

Smells of sun ripened peaches, wildflowers and smoked peach piths.

Offers a lower carbonation with a pleasantly light and silk mouthfeel to it.

Tastes of wood bark, wet basement and rich, ripe peaches. Turns dryer and sweeter then at the same time, with a more pronounced, citraic tartness on top. Finishes sweet with pith accompanied sweet peaches among a calmer, dusty tartness.

Intense and tasty beer. The younger lambic defines the flavors, while the peaches are just insanely prominent, complex and intriguing, establishing a well working sweeter counterpart to the sourness.

Oblivious a New England IPA by Dutch brewery De Moersleutel (6.5%).

Pours a hazy golden amber, peach coloration with a small, foamy head. Smells of light biscuity malt and tropical/citrus hops, with overripe tropical notes of mango and passion fruit dominating, as well as some orange.

Taste is s good balance of sweet'ish biscuity malt, juicy tropical hops and somewhat zesty citrus hops, with notes of mango, passion fruit, papaya, orange and tangerine, with just a hint of herbal dankness coming through as well. Finishes with a light bitterness and hop bite, as well as some overripe tropical/citrus notes lingering in the aftertaste. Soft mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

A good, quite juicyand tropical NEIPA that has those "overripe", sort of rubbery, fruit notes to it that I'm really not a big fan of personally though. De Moersleutel is just one of those breweries that make amazing stouts on a consistent basis, but their IPA game is just not quite there. It's not like this is a bad beer, far from it actually, it's just nowhere near as good as their excellent stouts.
