Funny how life can be that way some times, and I'm really glad it worked in your favor. Best wishes and better health to you, and may your travels continue to take you to interesting and unexpected places for a long long time!

Welcome back! And you've really been missed around these parts, and I hope you'll be sticking around. Cheers!

Happy Sunday, NBS crew! Drinking my first-ever Weldwerks beer today, thanks to a ninja box from @brutalfarce that I was hit with a few days ago.

Citra Extra Extra Juicy Bits - Weldwerks

    Canned 8/13/19 (33 days ago)

    Synopsis:
I see now why these Bits beers are hyped. Not only does it look stunning, it’s got a thick, creamy body that coats the tongue with each sip. Super citrus-fruit nose and taste. This isn’t solely a Citra-hopped beer but it sure tastes like it. Grapefruit, orange, and pineapple dominate the taste, without any other flavors muddling things up. I want more Weldwerks now, damn it. Thanks again William!

Good luck in your newest journey. It all sounds very familiar to me, about 8 years ago. Now I'm at my college basketball weight with BP usually under control. But damn, you have shit luck with the stinging things. I hate yellow jackets, always have. Years ago I was walking home from fishing with my trusty fly rod and considered just how to get in the door with the long rod. As I was negotiating my entry, my rod struck a wasps nest that proceeded to fall down the back of my shirt. That was one of my crappiest days...Drinking and fishing are usually good companions, but not always.
Take care of yourself and stay in touch.

    A shade of Pale… Oktoberfest

Today’s beer is a brand new Oktoberfest for me. There are lots of discussion about the varieties of Oktoberfest beers with names like Festbier, Wiesn, Märzen,… and there seems to be no universally accepted agreement on how to describe the various versions. From my perspective there are two types of Oktoberfest beers:

    · Amber Oktoberfest: the types of beers served at the Oktoberfest celebration many decades ago

    · Pale Oktoberfest: the types of beer being served at the Oktoberfest celebration today

So, Benediktiner Brewery is labeling this beer as Benediktiner Festbier but as far as I am concerned it is a Pale Oktoberfest.

Below is something I found via a web search.

“Benediktiner’s premium beers are brewed following original Benedictine recipes using special brewing yeast from the village of Ettal. The beer is brewed under licence from Benediktiner Weissbräu GmbH in the town of Lich.”

    https://www.bitburger-international.com/en/distribution-partners/benediktiner/our-products/

My guess is that this beer was contract brewed by Licher Brewery which is owned by Bitburger. A bit of a circuitous thing but it really all comes down to: is the beer tasty?

    Let’s find out.

Served in my Sly Fox Willi Becher glass:

    Appearance:

A medium golden color with a BIG white head which dissipates fairly quickly.

    Aroma:

The aroma is pretty much just a malty sweetness aspect.

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with malty sweetness. A low/moderate bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

Medium bodied with an off-dry finish.

    Overall:

This beer is a tad one-dimensional but I enjoyed drinking it. It sorta reminds me of a Helles Bock.

    Cheers!

For me the original Sabrina with Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, and William Holden is a favorite. And from 1939 In Name Only, starring Carole Lombard, Cary Grant, and Kay Francis is always good to see. Forrest Gump has just about everything a great movie can have.

Good morning NBS and thanks @lordofthewiens for the question today. My favorite is Holiday with Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn and a great support cast.
@cavedave you keep focused and check in on occasion with photos and updates on your progress, I greatly value your contributions. Be well

Todays offering is from NY by coincidence, Captain Lawrence Brewing, a wonderfully constructed barrel sour.
We are off to the Kitchen Garden farms annual Chilifest. A celebration of all things Chili pepper.
    Cheers all

    Barrel Select Gold

    Captain Lawrence Brewing Co.
American Wild Ale | 7% ABV

    4.13/5 rDev -1% | Average: 4.17
    look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4

Poured from a 500 ml bottle with out any dating, into the test glass
A - Excellent clarity allows for the carbonation show, to be fully appreciated, Billowing white cap of loose froth is the first act, then a series of clinging lace shows progress. Color is golden straw.
S - Apple skins, a bit of apricot, lime, sulfur, chalk, hints of oak, round out the nose.
T - Lemon verbena, green apple, nice barrel treatment adds the slightest vanilla, and young cider vinegar.
M - Medium in body, smooth on the palate, wonderful texture. Enough acidity to act as balancing agent. Linger is on the tart side and a delight.
O - A very well executed barrel sour. balanced with near perfection. Just sweet enough, the bitter and tart roll in unison.
A date on the bottle would be appreciated.

@cavedave - wish you all the best in getting healthy. My suggestion is cycling. I started this year on a 24 speed hybrid and it's not as hard on the joints as other cardio, small hills force you to work a bit but otherwise it's your pace and you cover some real ground so it feels pretty freeing. First time I've been able to lose some significant weight also! The third small chainring in the front is key though - really makes some of the hills possible and has kept me going for sure.
You'll be missed here so hope to see you back when you're doing better!

Not much of a romantic when it comes to films, but I've always liked Amélie. Something deeply sweet about that one for me.

From France to Estonia, but with Italian sensibilities, I just had an ItaloBänger.
Sweeter even than Amélie, I found a complexity of roasted malts, dark sweet soy sauce, molasses, orange liquor, figs, dates, and a licorice note. A great dessert sipper.

    Good morning NBS
I start nightshifts tonight and have lined up six quads (one for each day) to make the transition to sleep in the mornings easier. This one I'd never sampled before, so NBS it is...
11.2oz bottle brewed in 2012, bottled 12/07/2016 (just over 3 years ago) after a double barrel treatment of wine then bourbon casks. Poured into a chalice at just above fridge temp 10.5% ABV. The beer pours hazy medium amber in color with meager khaki head. The head recedes to fluffy ring and small island of tiny bubbles. The aroma offers brown sugar, grape, cola, dried fruit and faint oak in an ever changing and complex presentation. The taste is rich chewy caramel, dried dark fruit, subtle cherry and dark candi sugar with a drying, mildly bitter, mildly oaky finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with pleasant, slightly above average carbonation. No trace of alcohol in the taste or aroma. No cloying sweetness. Overall, excellent. This is a standard bearer for the style with the wine & bourbon barrel influence interwoven so seamlessly that those flavors are lost in the Quad.

I rarely spend $10 on a single, but I thought I'd give this a try. It's a great start to the week.

@cavedave, sorry you're having to avoid beer currently, but glad you have prioritized health and family. Be sure to drop in and write about whatever. I think you'll get a pass. You and @utopiajane both inspired me to describe beer beyond good and bad, and I'm grateful.

Cheers all and enjoy the new beer in your glass today!
