Going for one night in Pilsen to hit Pilsner Urquell. Any beer bars, other breweries or restaurant suggestions in the area? Appreciate it!

there used to be a guy in a white smock who would walk up and down the train platforms selling half-liter bottles of fresh urquell out of a wooden wagon. always bought from him

seriously, tho, the tourism office might have some good suggestions. last time I was there was 15 years ago, so mine are likely out of date. one place was an old communist holdover out one of the main avenues in the western (residential) part of the city. found it using a communist era map that had mugs representing official taverns. beer was US $0.10 a half liter. good times....

you'll have a good time and find some great places I'm sure. if you see "pivo man" at the station snap a pic for us.

Paging @gavinbrooksbank - I'm sure he hold me that he told me that there is a pub near Pilsen station that sells unpasteurised Urquell. I hope so, off there myself in November.

yes mate, theres a pub called Na Parkanu only a short walk from the brewery which is one of the only boozers that sells unfiltered urquell. (most if not all of the tankovna urquell is unpastuerised)

I was in Plzen a couple of days ago. I would recommend a visit to the Na Parkanu pub. If you are hungry and enjoy duck I would highly recommend the duck confit.

Below is something I recently I wrote in my trip report of my visit to Plzen:

“After the completion of the tour we decided to get some lunch at Na Parkanu Pub:

At this pub they also had the unfiltered/non-pasteurized PU on tap so we all ordered a 0.5 liter glass to drink with our lunch. This beer was very good (just like at the brewery).

I’m planning a trip to Prague next month and was thinking of going to Pilsen. I wanted to visit the Pilsner Urquell brewery, but they insist on reserving and paying on their website.

This isn’t really an option as I might decide not go, because I only have 3 days in Prague.

    I have some questions:

Is it worth going to Pilsen without going to the brewery if I only have 3 days in Prague?

Is it worth going on a Sunday or will places be closed?

They have said there is an outside chance get on a brewery tour without reserving if they have space. Has anyone got on the tour like that? I have would prefer a tour in English, but doing it in German would be fine.

    Thanks

I took a tour of the brewery when I visited Prague a few months ago. We took the train from Prague to Plzen and we did not reserve tickets. We walked from the train station to the brewery and purchased tickets there - the next tour that was in English. They conduct several tours a day so if you are flexible on timing I would think you could purchase the tickets the day of your visit. After the brewery tour we had lunch and walked around the city to see sites (underground, church in the square, synagogue, another pub visit,...) and then took the train home to Prague. It was a very nice day visit.

A PU brewery tour is worthwhile IMO.

    Cheers!

If you decide not venture to Pilsen but still want to tour a brewery, I had a great visit to Pivovary Staropramen.

I walked there from Old Town and really enjoyed their tap room.

You are going at a quiet time of year, so I think you will be ok getting a ticket on the day. The tour is definitely worth going on.

Pilsen is a nice place but if you only have 3 days in Prague and you haven't been there before, maybe stick to Prague this time and go to Pilsen next time.
