The past couple weeks have been frustrating, because I’ve been dealing with a bureaucracy. When we filed taxes for 2018 we paid taxes to Maine and New Mexico, since we lived in both states during the year. A couple weeks ago we received notice from New Mexico that we owed additional tax. We were supposed to get a credit for taxes paid to another state, but New Mexico disallowed that credit. As I looked through our return, I realized I had not sent a copy of our Maine return with our New Mexico return, as required. My first thought was why didn’t you notify me of the problem, instead of simply denying the credit. Then I thought all I needed to do was refile with the necessary paperwork. So I called the state tax people. After running the phone tree gauntlet, the person I spoke with said that was what I needed to do. Done.

Then I got another bill from the state with more interest and more late fees added. Rather than go through the phone tree again (they are a royal pain in the ass), I drove downtown to the tax building. The nice person there told me that it takes at least 4-6 weeks to evaluate an amended return, and to just ignore any more statements from the state (at least until I get the final word on the amended return).

This small contretemps got me thinking about drinking a beer. Not just any beer, but a New Beer. And not just any New Beer, but a New Beer on Sunday. And not merely drinking this New Beer on Sunday, but writing down a review of said beer. I think I will do exactly that, and I encourage you all to do likewise.

    Cheers!

Hops are not listed from what I have searched but I would image Citra to be in this one. I also get some lemony notes as well, lemon-drop?

Regardless I have to admit this brew is pretty damn tasty. Nice little New England style IPA from a brewery I never even herd of.

Body is on the lighter side of med while being smooth.

Bitterness is inline with most NEIPAs.

    Cheers and Happy NBS!

    This is their Bliss DIPA

Wow Im really impressed by this one. Really digging it. Comes off much more danky and herbal then their IPA but it drinks much more dynamic then that. Def get those tropical notes on the flavor for sure. Very smooth DIPA with no harsh bitterness at all. OMG this is a crusher!

    Thanks for the start!
Sorry to hear about your paper work troubles. I like to think of the legal world as having only two dimensions, front and back, which I call the paper world. But dont forget that YOU operate and live in three dimensions and 2-D is ONLY a subset of 3-D. So I invite you to grab a new three dimensional brew and take a break from your troubles on this NBS!

Thanks to @lordofthewiens for kicking this off. Enjoying a 2019 Wet Hop IPA out of Tombstone Brewing Co. Another fantastic beer from @honkey as always, loads of flavor and fresh hops just bursting at the seams.

A: Hazy deep gold with a rich foamy head and lots of lacing.
N: Picking up grapefruit/resin, mango, pineapple, and citrus.
T: A nice mix of citrus and tropical. Getting that grapefruit/resin feel then a clean and bright tropical splash to bring this full circle.
M: Clean and easy to drink, low bitterness and zero ABV feel.
O: An exceptional Wet Hop beer, bursting with hoppy goodness and very balanced. Another killer beer out of Tombstone.

Howdy, NBSers! Just got off the late shift, saw Dick's great (or unfortunate:flushed::grimacing:) start, so I grabbed the newbie waiting in my fridge and popped the top:
Southern Star's Texas Golden Bock, a "Hill Country dark lager" according to the website (aka, competition for Shiner Bock?), 5.26% ABV, 18 IBUs

It's listed here on BA.com as both retired and a German maibock FWIW.

Not knowing how old my can is, I like it very much. It's grainy but not overly so with enough toasted malt flavor to give it some depth. The mouthfeel is arguably perfect for a quaffer, light and crisp but just heavy enough to be filling. The aroma gets real sweet as it warms, fruitcake and apricot kolaches and lots of sweet bread, but if it's too sweet, it also isn't a mushy malty mess of caramel and creamed corn — aromas I run into when a poorly constructed beer experiences full malt takeover.

It's got to be old (6 months to a year+). There's no date on it anywhere. But it's pretty good. I'd love to see if the Hallertauer Mittelfruh hops offer any balance in a fresh version.

I've got loads of unwinding to do to start my weekend but no new beer. In fact, that last dram in my bottle of Redbreast 12 may be calling.:stuck_out_tongue: But here's to another great NBS ... I shall be watching its career with considerable interest.

    Cheers!

    New Beer Sunday: German Helles

Mornin’ NBSers with a report for folks in SE PA about a local beer that has improved my first impressions of a fairly new local brewery. Also, special thanks to @lordofthewiens for his early start up this week.

The weather here today is expected to be mostly sunny and warm with a high temperature in the mid-to low 80s. Perfect day for taking care of some items from the “honey-do” list.

This early morning’s new beer is from Workhorse Brewing in King of Prussia, PA. They are a fairly new brewery to this area and I looked at their NEIPA last week. The beer was a bit of a disappointment for me not in that there was some bitterness in the NEIPA but rather there was a moderate citric zest/resinous bitterness that was not harsh but that seemed far forward and to persist for far too long. So this morning It’s time for a second new beer from Workhorse, their Helles. With this beer they are redeeming themselves in my view.

My review can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/54022/379573/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors are gentle but filled with bready malt and some light floral hops with some spicy herbal character. The flavors are clean and crisp, subtle and inviting. Much as we’d expect from this style. This is definitely an enjoyable, drinkable beer and it would be easy to have more than one. I certainly won’t avoid having another, and I recommend giving it a try if you enjoy the Helles style.

    Cheers, all!

    Allagash Truepenny

The brewer calls this a “Belgian-style pilsner” but I wouldn’t take that too seriously. This beer is a pilsner with a little bit of “wild beer” blended in. Allagash always likes to make sure that their stamp is on every kind of beer they make.

It’s clear and golden. Smells of honey. Tastes of honey too, along with pilsner malt. Starts with a peach candy flavor and finishes dry with a herbal bitterness. After drinking this, I learned that the “wild beer” was a beer made with their house brett. Allagash’s brett contributes a lot of pineapple for me. I guess this was probably the source of what I called “peach candy flavor” above. That makes sense, and I’m a little surprised by how much it came through. Guess I was expecting the process to be slightly more gimmicky than the result. The end result is a delicious and unique pilsner. Can’t wait for a second impression.

@TongoRad , I think you’ll want to try this one.

[IMG] Poured into a 16 oz Nordic pint glass canned on 9/05/19. Pours a very hazy orange yellow with a finger plus sticky white head that leaves thick streaks of lace, with very solid retention. 4.5

Smell melon, papaya, pineapple, tangerine, and some mild grapefruit rind. 4.25

Taste follows ripe honey dew, papaya, tangerine, pineapple, and a very balanced and pleasant shot of grapefruit. 4.25

Mouthfeel is a solid medium, soft gentle life that coats the entire palate, extremely crushable, but still drinks flavor and size like over 6%. 4.5

Overall this is real treat, when you make a session beer this big and tasty, you deserve a serious pat on the back.

    Hello New Beer Sunday!!!

Welcome all to my favorite day of the week, and no, it's not because it's my weekend. It's because this is the day to set up and try new beers.

Today, I decided to enjoy this beer in "proper" glassware.

Mornin' Latte from Toppling Goliath Brewing.

Yes, I poured it into a giant coffee mug.

This coffee beer has it all. The coffee is really powerful, but it is also mellowed out by the lactose, and chocolate. Just one hell of a combination, and a great way to start the morning.

Poured into a big coffee cup, because, why not.
Pours quite dark. I'd guess the head is 1 finger. Nice tan colored. Frothy. Some lacing on the coffee cup as the head dissipates.
The nose is really rich with coffee. This coffee is backed up with chocolate, and a hint of lactose.
Taste - Bold coffee, that lingers throughout. I get the chocolate more up front, and the lactose more on the backside.
The body is thick. The lactose provides a bit of a creamy feel .
Just a total amazing, and solid beer. Totally awesome.

Yes, I'll be back for more later. I've got to drink down my supply of new beers, because I'm going to be hit hard tomorrow.

Pours black with a thin tan head that leaves some blotchy lacing, no visible carbonation. Smells of chocolate, cinnamon, roasted malts and coffee. Tastes of fudge, coffee, cinnamon, dark roasted malts, vanilla, raisins, smoke and an extremely mild pepper flavor in the background. Full bodied, moderate carbonation and a creamy mouth feel, very mild dry finish.

Happy New Back to the Beer Future Sunday, Part 4, Mission I, (Week 762)!
Taxes! Grr. I feel like I have less & less income very year & yet I am paying more & more! The House has recently introduced a bill here in PA for property tax abatement & I hope that it passes, although I am not holding my breath.

Speaking of bureaucracy, here is one from a few years ago that STILL grinds my gears: Here in Lancaster, we went to a single-hauler trash disposal system since too many Lancastrians at the time were renters and were not contracting to have their trash picked up. Fair dinkum, except that it is a flat fee & so now, I pay the same as a single dweller as does my neighbor with a wife & three kids! 8={} Then, a few years ago, I got slapped with a "failure to properly sort recyclables" fine! 8=O You know from reading on here that I have a tiny carbon footprint: I don't drive, I don't even own a car, I gather discarded aluminum for a twice-annual recycling run, I get plastic out of the gutter & into recycling bins. Long story short - I am religious about recycling & want to argue this fine. Okay, but first I must pay the fine & THEN have it adjudicated! 8={} By then, a picture of the offense was posted along with the case # & when I looked at it, my house (736) was NOT even in the picture! It was the apartment building next door at 738! Sure, I got my $ back, but sans interest, NO apology, nothing. THAT is why I drink beer!

The TARDIS is all revved up for another week of revisiting NBSs of the past as I close in on one that will be so massive as to take several days (NOT protracted over weeks).

My first of the day hearkens back to Week 726 as The Taxman cameth (sorry, Doc, but you broached the subject) in the form of @jkblr 's box o' goodies. I somehow overlooked this one until today:

2nd Shift's black noise, canned back in july. i've never had port barrel anything before so this is uncharted waters. looks like a good stout in the glass, minus the sticky foam. nose is just like the regular black noise, lots of chocolate-y malt goodness and a very earthy backdrop, but theres a slew of dark fruits stinking up the glass and im enjoying that quite a bit. flavor follows and its solid. a little warm in the throat but quite drinkable.
i love 2nd shift a lot and you should too.

I saw a beer kinda like this last week, it was labeled as a white ipa, I’m thinking it was from Edmunds Oast from Charleston. The white part scared me off, I don’t really like the funky profiles from these kinda beers, but id give some latitude to this brewer everything from Edmunds Oast I’ve had has been terrific.

Good day New BSers! @lordofthewiens, thanks for the start and sorry to hear about your tax troubles - have a beer! Another overcast day here in New Braunfels - hope it clears up by 1100 when we'll be at 5 Stones enjoying fresh local beer. If you're gonna be there, I'll be the guy in shorts taking notes and displaying alabaster legs. I really need to review that place - it's really relaxing and low-stress.
Well, today's New Breakfast Beer is:

$ 13.96 (Including tax and discount)/375 mL (12.7 oz) corked and caged bottle ($ 1.10/oz) at Spec’s, DeZavala Road, SAT. Reviewed 9/29/19.
Stamped on front of label “Bottled 05/01/18”. On room temp shelf at store, stored and served at reefer temperature. Final temperature unknown but sipped over half an hour.
    Appearance – 4.
    First pour – Yellow, clear.
Body – Yellow, clear, effervescent. Second pour releases a few large floaties.
Head – Average (Maximum six cm, aggressive center pour), off-white, high density, short duration, diminishing to a five mm crown and complete cap. Second pour generates a one cm head.
    Lacing – None.
Aroma – 4 – Brettanomyces funk, a little acid, and some generic citrus, not specifically tangerine.
Flavor – 4.5 - Begins with a mouthful of pucker-power from the Lactobacillus lactic acid and the oak tannic acid, followed by a bit of remaining tangerine. No alcohol (6.2% ABV) flavor or aroma, no dimethylsulfide, no diacetyl, no vanillin.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, dry, lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation – 4 – Decent wild ale using one of the more innocuous members of the citrus family. Well balanced and tends to have some fruit flavor remaining, not just a Brettanomyces drink.
    Rating 4.15, rDev+2.5%.

    Happy New Beer Reprise Sunday.

I wasn't joking when I said I couldn't wait for a second impression. I decided to open a second one and see if I perceived it differently. This time, the brett character was much more in the background, and the grainy and hoppy quality took over. Still a nice beer even though the second glass felt more routine.

    @TongoRad
A "white IPA" would be really different from this beer, but yeah, the inspiration has some similarities. The beer you saw was probably like a Belgian Wit but with an American IPA hopping approach. This Allagash beer is very much a pilsner. If you get Allagash, don't be scared off by this one.

Think I’ll venture into this virtual barroom this morning, just because I want to give some attention to a Chicago brewery that is making New England IPAs as good as, if not better than, most East Coast brewers. When I had Grid by Hop Butcher, I thought it was Tree House quality. Bughouse Square is not at that level, but it’s not too far behind. I’m not going to rate it today because my nose is slightly stuffed up and I can’t get a good read on the aroma, but damn, this is still one tasty beer. The best thing about it, however, is the fact that it’s not too over the top, like a lot of brewers think New England IPAs need to be. It’s got plenty of hop juiciness, but there’s a mild bitterness on the back end that counteracts it. It looks great, I remember the first can I had of it earlier this week smelled great, it’s got a well rounded and big bodied feel to it, and it’s a damn tasty beer.

I stopped at my second favorite beer store this week (glass pictured below, if you’re in the Southwest Chicago suburbs, check them out), and since they always have three to four Hop Butcher beers on the front wall, I knew they would have this one. I’ve seen it on BA a lot recently, so I really wanted to get it. My only regret is not buying two or three four packs.

    Happy NBS, beersavants.

Good morning, all! Thanks to @lordofthewiens for today's opening. It's times like those that make me consider faking my own death and dropping off the grid. The fact that I know next to nothing about living off the land jolts me back to reality - or as close as I ever get to it, anyway. Time for a new beer.

Over in the thread about a herd of spotted cows visiting the New Glarus brewery, some idiot :flushed: went off on a tangent about Spotted Cow being referenced in the linked article as a farmhouse ale. I'd always thought it was a cream ale; the brewer, however, says otherwise. I didn't even know about Spotted Cow Grand Cru, a Belgian saison which NG calls an imperial version of its flagship beer. I vowed not only to revisit Spotted Cow, but also to track down its big brother. Since Prairie du Chien, WI, is only a few minutes away from Elkader, IA, I took a little side trip before the Zwanze Day festivities yesterday and managed to score my whalez within thirty seconds of walking through the door at Stark's Sport Shop. (Coolest liquor store ever. They have a fantastic selection of craft beers, wines, and spirits, and you can also buy a boat, a rifle, and/or a fishing reel while you're shopping for your alcohol.) I'll be back later with Spotted Cow Grand Cru, and maybe a few notes on the original. Cheers!
