That works for me. Way closer than JP or Salem for me.

The guys opening Brato in Brighton the coming months would probably be a bit bummed to not be the only kid on the block. But as an Oak Sq resident, give me all the breweries!

The Notch JP event had a grand total of two beers available the night I was there. My toilet tank has a bigger selection.

This might be a dumb question but I'm curious about what "open fermentation" means in this sort of context (and this has come up a lot on the lager thread in the main forum too, so I've been wondering about it prior to this Notch post).

Given how these sorts of beers taste, I'm assuming we're not talking about a coolship sort of thing where the aim is to get lots of wild bacteria and yeast into the mix. These kinds of beers seem too consistent (not to mention unfunky) for that sort of thing.

    Can anyone enlighten me?

In the traditional sense, open fermentation is the folkloric approach that's been modernized to closed/lidded for simplicity

The coolship is more along the lines of spontaneous fermentation: boils down to the yeast used/wild microbe incorporation

Open fermentation allows the yeast to be happy and healthy without back pressure. Many brewers swear it produces a cleaner beer, especially regarding lagers.

It is more of a natural environment for the yeast to do their thing. Have to be very cautious to avoid contamination but if done right it is worth it.

Anyone been to one of the Notch beer gardens at the Trustees? Thinking about checking out the one in Hingham this weekend, but wasn’t sure if these were fun/well run or not.

My wife and I went to the Appleton Farm (Ipswich) one last Saturday. It’s a great place for walking, for anyone who has never been. I think the place/space play a big part, but we had a great time and it was very well run. Great fall day with people taking advantage of the weather as well as being able to eat and drink outside in the farm setting.

We’ve also done the one at Chestnut Hill Farm in Southborough. Well run and fun as well.

I’d really like to do the one at the Crane Estate when it’s there again.

I did one early in the summer in NA and we had a blast. Super low key, but their beers are built for that kind of atmosphere. No one taking artful pictures or checking into Untappd with their lagahs. Just people enjoying an afternoon in the sun.

It was zwickel and dog & pony show on Saturday. Bonus, they were only pouring half liters, but if you brought a Notch branded liter, as I did, they will fill it. Zwickel was tasting mighty fine in the open air.
