Good afternoon, NBS! Posting new beer number one just in time to focus on the Giants game. Then I’ll hopefully be back with another one later.

Good to be back here after a hiatus for the past few weeks. (Not from drinking beer. Just posting in NBS.)

A huge thank you to @Joplamp for generously giving me the chance to drink my first Bottle Logic beer and a long time want.

Bottle Logic - Fundamental Observation (2018)

Look: This stout pours opaque and dark brown in color. A half finger, light brown head settles with a thick ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass. Swirls of foam sit on top of the liquid. Some legs after I swirl the beer, but no lacing. No visible carbonation. After sipping for a while all foam subsides but for a thin ring around the edge.

Smell: The aroma entices. Stout, bourbon, barrel, vanilla all present nicely. This bourbon barrel aged stout is spirit and barrel forward. The vanilla also pops in a natural and creamy way that reminds me of icing. The stout offer notes of chocolate, some dark dried fruit and a hint of nutty coffee.

Taste: This beer is meant for drinking. Not impressing. Although, it achieves the latter with little effort. Some mild sweetness upfront including milk chocolate and figs/dates. A raisinette flavor. Mid palate the sweetness yields to a slight charred wood and gentle bitterness, then returns as the warm bourbon flavor grows and eventually lingering on the finish without ever disappearing.

Feel: Medium body with low to medium level of carbonation. Semi-sweet without crossing the line into dessert territory. Though a sticky sweetness coats my lips as I drink the beer. I like this quality in big, dark beers. A lingering bourbon warmth on the palate.

Overall: There is a nice chocolatey and dark fruit stout base, highlighted by prominent bourbon, barrel and vanilla notes. This beer was not designed to impress, but it does. What I mean by that is the beer is not forced. It’s not overly thick, overly sweet or too / artificial with vanilla. I would not call this beer “hot,” but the bourbon flavor and feel is certainly present. For me, this is the happy medium. Sometimes the barrel is not noticeable. Other times it’s too woody, or the spirit is too present. This beer nicely integrates the barrel. All in all, an excellent BBA Imperial Stout with vanilla that neither tries too hard nor is it shy.

A high rDev on this beer but I don’t put much into that here. My overall rating of 4.45 / 5 speaks for itself.

    4.45/5 rDev -7%

WTF @Jimmy_Kneecaps ! This might be the weirdest beer I’ve had! [IMG]

Imperial Pastry Sour Ale!? Yep that’s what this is! Really interesting and unique, glad I got to try it.

Still not getting a ton of grape even knowing I should be looking for it although the sourness tastes more like a tannic grape skin.
I’m at a 3.97 on this one, second review.
    Thanks JT, great beer.

Yellowhammer Brewing Mic Czech style pilsner

Clear light gold color with good cap and lacing.

Aroma of sweet malt and floral, spicy hops.

Taste is fuller and richer than the scent with malt pulling the wagon and hops being the load. Rich but not sweet malt remains the main emphasis from start to finish but there is enough hop influence to keep things in balance. The hops are somewhat restrained for the style showing more floral than spice and singing just loud enough to be heard. There is a sort of caramel touch in the aftertaste but the whole remains dry. Simple flavors that work well together in harmony.

Medium full texture with balancing carbonation.

Overall it's an interesting approach to the Czech style. Not so sharply hoppy as we might expect, this one strikes me as more of a Helles with emphasis on the malt. That being said it is a good malt flavor and a balanced brew. I'm pairing it with Seafood Gumbo for lunch and in that role it plays well.

I've got a few new-to-me offerings from VT and Quebec to open on today's rare Sunday off. When you work weekends you take the whole weekend off when you attend a wedding on a Saturday. Am I right?

    16 oz. can.
    Canned 08/27/19.
Moderate to vigorous pour yields a 3/4 inch slightly off-white head over a cloudy body with some lacing. Very nice nose of tropical fruit and citrus. Taste of key lime with a bitter citrus pith finish. Lime, lime, and more lime! At first the flavor and total experience was a bit off-putting and definitely took some time to get used to. It sort of tastes like a hard lime soda. Good feel and overall, not for everyone.

    German Märzen / Oktoberfest | 5.6% ABV

    3.84/5 rDev -4.7% | Average: 4.03
    look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.75

L-The beer pours a light amber with just a touch of haze to it. The head is two and a half fingers of off white foam. The head recedes to a respectable film leaving spots of lace around the glass.
S-The nose displays a solid malt presence. No discernible hop presence is detectable.
T-On the palate the hops come more into play than they did in the nose. The malt still comes out on top in the long run, but it's still a fairly balanced finish.
F-Mouthfeel overall is medium. Carbonation is medium. Finish is wet.
O- This is a decent, Oktoberfest with a balanced finish. It's a little heavy in the mouthfeel which combined with the carbonation impedes it's drinkablility. Ok for a tick, but their are better easily available versions.

New Beautifully Smoked Beer Sunday (slash Saturday)

Ok, so I had this beer yesterday and was going to give it a review next to its (presumed by me) brother, but conversation at the brewery ensued and took me away from the review. My brief thoughts were put forth in WBAYDN:
So, I liked Port City's Rauch Marzen enough thto get a Crowler of it, which will be opened and reviewed today. Let's see if my thoughts from yesterday (I actually got as far as the rating, a 4.24) hold up:

As you can see, I am following up by comparing this with Port City's Oktoberfest, which I am going to call the "base beer" even though I do not know for certain there is any similarities in the recipes. I'll argue that if you were at Port City you might be trying to decide between these two similar beers, so a comparison fits, regardless.

Both bring a decent head in this pour. The Rauch Marzen is darker (even after accounting for the difference is glass sizes - more of a medium brown than the amber of the regular Oktoberfest. The head on the Rauch beer looks a little more beige than the off-white regular beer. I actually think the Oktoberfest is a little bit more enticing with its more obvious clarity.

The Oktoberfest has a toasted malt, light caramel nose and a light caramel, slightly fruity, then mildly earthy flavor.

The Oktoberfest's scent was not too strong, so it's not a surprise that the smoke overtakes the nose in the Rauch Marzen. That said, it isn't an overpowering note - it almost as if they turned up the toaster dial to "dark" from "medium light" to make the Rauchbier. The smoke seems also to bring a hint of that fruit I got in the base beer's taste. Definitely an upgrade in smell.

Like the nose comparison, the sweetness from the opening taste of the base beer gets dampened by the smoke. Also like the nose, the smoke is not the only thing that can be distinguished. A more earthy set of flavors overall, the beer goes from darker toast to lightly smoked beef jerky to a long since put out campfire. There is a lighter thread of some sort of light fruit acidity that helps cut through the smoke and earth tones.

The feel of the Rauch Marzen is a little more flat than I recall from yesterday - perhaps the difference between fresh and Crowler pours. I don't get quite the same metallic note today - but there is a little something that seems more of a near acrid smoke note. This is only barely distracting.

This Rauch Marzen here has a nice amount of smoke that does drive the beer as a whole without running it over. If this is a slight variant of the Oktoberfest, the similarities aren't obvious, though they are noted when I sip them side-by-side. That said, the smoked beer comes across a little more as a brown than the lighter Marzen.

So I'm back from my hike after that early morning Zonker Stout. Along with a light lunch, I'm quaffing this one.

    Trillium - The Fens

Had this near Pittsburgh, PA from a 16oz canned 2019-09-17. My overall score is 4.21

    A - Very hazy golden-orange with a massive 4-finger pillowy-white head that lasts-and-last with great lace.

S - Ripe pineapple, orange, papaya, hop bud dankness. Just a hint of malt.

T - Orange flesh and zest, ripe pineapple, moderate pine, rye cracker. Yeast and aspirin. Finishes with citrus, hop bud dankness and reasonable bitterness.

M - Medium body and light-medium carbonation. Substantial yet soft

O - Another fine NEIPA. They sure are masters of this style although my personal preference is more West Coast.

Good afternoon NBS, have some grading to do while I watch the Eagles, but first a beer. I was not able to make it up to Tired Hands before their Oktoberfest sold out, but @CanConPhilly did get an extra can for. This is another great lager from Tired Hands’ Trendler series.

16 oz can poured into a pint glass

A- A clear golden straw with a fast fading white head.

S- Toasted malts, touch of caramel malts, balanced earthy hops, touch of light fruits.

T- Toasted malts, sweet bread, caramel malts, touch of light fruits, some earthy hops.

    M- Smooth, medium body.

O- I was hoping it would have some more caramel malts, but still a well brewed Oktoberfest.

    Good afternoon NBS
I thought I had a Brazil tick here, but not sure now. This was actually brewed in Canada by Cervejas Premium Do Brazil which I don't see listed in BA at all. I may have lucked out as this beer tasted way better than the reviews of the Brazilian version sounded. Thanks multinational conglomerates for making my Sunday beer enjoyment exhausting...
    The beer:
12oz bottle coded J048 1543 poured into a pilsner glass at fridge temp 4.7% ABV per label. The beer pours bright light straw yellow with off white head. The head recedes to a thin cap and leaves a little lacing. The aroma is faint with light malt, grain and very slight lager yeast. The taste is grainy malt, with a touch of sour, a tiny bit of grassy hops ending with a mildly bitter (barely vegetable) finish. The mouthfeel is thin bodied, highly carbonated and mostly dry in the finish. No glaring off flavors or flaws. Overall, ok, as a German Pilsner. It would be very good as an AAL, but I'm not sure there are any brewing adjuncts used in the production. Tastes like maybe all 2-row barley.

Ok then. The website listed on the bottle www.eurobrews.com seems to be out of commission, so I'm at a loss to describe how this beer landed at my LBS this week. I'm going to place a note on my review that the beer I sampled was brewed in Canada and move on. Cheers all & enjoy the new beer in your glass today!

Bayrischer Bahnhof - Berliner Style Weisse With Oats

I’ve never had the “oats” version of this beer before. B United’s canning initiative shows no signs of slowing down. This beer is a very pale clear yellow with a slight hint of green. Carbonation is very low. Smells of acid. Tastes of bright acidity, lemon, crackers, white bread. I couldn’t tell you how different this is from the normal version without doing a side-by-side. Perhaps this has a more oily feel, but the primary driver for experiments like this is certainly getting an extra sale due to ticker culture.

There are lots of Octoberfest themed events happening here. I am much more interested on two other developments locally. First, Bierkeller is doing beer gardens on Tuesdays and a few Saturdays. Secondly, our neighborhood wine store had to relocate and just reopened. It has a good selection of interesting moderate ABV beers, all refrigerated, and three rotating beers on tap. I picked up my NBS beer there yesterday, Munkle Brewing Co. Munk Pils.

This beer doesn't appear on their website. Most of their beers are Belgian styles except for a porter and this pilsner.
After the chill haze lifted it had perfect clarity and a healthy white head. There is an Inviting biscuit and light grassy aroma. It is crisp and dry with light floral notes.
Another good beer from Munkle. I am looking forward to visiting the brewery in November.

This was posted in error and I did not realize it until it was to late to edit or delete. The rest of the post goes like this
This beer is Twin Elephant Brewing's answer to that question .Megustalations is an American Session Adjunct Ale. It's brewed with German Pilsner and Irish Ale malt, Added to the grain bill are Jasmine Rice, Flaked American Corn and flaked Barley. The hops used are Crystal and Mt. Hood. This beer looks like an AAL except the head is much thicker and longer lasting. There is a mild and pleasant floral aroma. The taste is also mild and pleasant mostly malt and a bit of hop bitterness. The mouthfeel is AAL light and the finish is off dry. Overall a well made beer that most BMC drinkers would enjoy.
