The northeast is finally getting into stout season (kind of). What are your favorite stouts that are easily picked up from the local bottle shop? For me, I usually rotate between Bell's Expedition, Founder's Breakfast Stout and Dark Horse's Plead the Fifth.

This is a relative shelfie - but just so happens that a local store has had (slightly premium priced) Sump and Abraxas for a while. And I seem to be the only one buying. Picked up a Sump last night. So good. I’m definitely an FBS fan too. And l guess it’s not unreasonable to say KBS is now (or at least about to be) a shelfie. And although (like the perennial stuff) it’s not cheap, Prairie stouts are a go to. Also picked up ET Our Version Of The Trending Danish Dream Cake the other day which I enjoyed.

Not sure if all of this stuff qualifies, but all store-bought with no hoops to jump / no waiting / no special timing.

I thought Storm King was really, really good last year. I almost always have some FBS around. Xocoveza is another easy one to find.

If we are talking about reasonably priced stouts that come in 12 oz/16 oz formats, my list is pretty short:

    SN Narwhal
    Old Rasputin

Yards Love Stout and Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout are two of my favorites. Also, not exactly a stout but I've always loved Smuttynose Robust Porter. It's close enough.

Is Victory still (2019) producing this beer?

    Cheers!

I thought Storm King was seasonal now since last year? Hope they still make it, that beer is a good value stout.

Yeah, this is what I was going for. Stuff that you can get away with drinking during or after dinner or something on most nights and still function. Just looking to broaden my go-tos. I wish I could drink Prairie stouts every night during the colder months, but that'll add up so quickly.

I looked too, no sign of it anywhere. Well, I enjoyed The storm king I had in 2018. That’s a bummer.

Founders Porter is very bold and robust so the porter/stout distinction is pretty irrelevant. Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter is the same way.

Others not mentioned that are labeled as stouts:
    Oscar Blues Ten Fidy
    GD Yeti
Founders Imperial Stout is coming back this year
Weyerbacher Tiny (if you dig the Belgian yeast)
    Great Lakes Blackout Stout
    Voodoo BBVD
Most of the Clown Shoes stouts are good
Bells' Java and Double Cream Stouts

This is the answer to the question for a daily drinker stou-rter.

Agree with many of the recommendations above. I'll add Allagash Black to the list. Perhaps not the easiest beer to find, but Whole Foods usually carries it over the winter months. It's one of my favorite beers regardless of season. Smooth with hints of chocolate, coffee, and raisin on the palate.

BBCS is the beer that got me into American beer. Maybe I’m just not looking for it so much these days, but I feel like I don’t see it around that much. I stopped at three stores on my way home tonight - all of which have decent selections. And all of which have several (in one case extensive) offerings by Brooklyn. No BBCS at any

You probably already know this, but it's a seasonal whose annual availability window begins in October, which we only just entered. I'd expect that you'll have little trouble finding it soon.

It sounds like you have a thing for dark shelf beers from Michigan. When you add Founders' Imperial Stout and Porter to this list, and Bell's Kalamazoo, I do, too. Wisconsin, Illinois, and Minnesota aren't exactly slouches in this department either.

Perhaps it's due to the especially harsh winters or some competitive regional synergy, or both, but the Upper Midwest has produced an inordinate number of malt-forward masterpieces.

Awesome beer. Brooklyn Brewery did a ten year vertical tasting of it a few years back for New York City beer week. One of my most informative drinking experience.

They treat as a winter seasonal. Takes awhile to get distributed in Brooklyn. Come December, it’ll be in every grocery store. One of the few beers I don’t mind with shelf age.
