Grace & Grit was actually the first NEIPA to get distro to DFW a few years back and set the bar. My friends and I used to alert each other every time stores got a fresh batch because it would sell out within a day. Local breweries started trying their hand at the style and the results were shit across the board. The first local brewer to nail the style was Matt Reynolds, a guy working for a bougie Thai place that made their own beer. Once it became known that that was the place to go for IPAs, my wife and I started going every time he dropped a new beer. It was pretty hilarious looking around the overpriced restaurant where a ton of well-dressed people were eating and then around the bar where a bunch of bearded dudes in cargo shorts were taking pics for untappd. He eventually got his own brewery open, Celestial Beerworks, which some of my targets have gotten to try. We do collabs all the time and he's an awesome dude. Anyway, been ages since I've had this one and I'm excited to revisit it!

so my two cents...ON has fantastic base hazy. M43 and Boss Tweed are my go-to draft selections around here (Arvon is starting to steal some of the frequency though). Even Greenstone, Carthorse, and Full Earth are solid examples of the style.

I think they lose their way a bit when the “variants” come out. Where-as the Whole Punch from Hitchhiker kicked you in the face with a ton of ripe mango, followed by the hit of bitterness from the hops, the Boss Tweed just comes across as a truly “hot” can of Boss Tweed with negligible fruit. My assumption is they kicked out the cans quickly so the fruit didn’t fade, but it just led to a hot mess. I have one can left that I’m sitting on to try in a few weeks.

i had a similar experience with the Strawberry Tart M43...just didn’t seem dialed in. By no means am i critiquing what ON did, as they’ve truly dialed in their bases. It just seems that as they chase those hype sales it bastardized their overall brand a bit.

Also, Hitchhiker is a true hidden gem. Their sour and ipa game are both consistent and innovative. Their taproom is welcoming and loaded with options.

I’m no expert reviewer like @TheGent but he verified exactly what I thought he’d feel.
