Odd Side Wet Hopped Citra Pale ale. This was fantastic. Lasting fluffy head retention/thick foamy lacing the whole glass. Aromas and flavors of huge red grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, lime, peach, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, honeydew melon, guava, berries, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, and pine hops; with moderate cracker, white bread dough, toasted biscuit malts; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body, and fairly crisp finishing. Balanced creamy/bready/grainy malts and sticky/resinous/rindy hops in the mouthfeel. Moderate increasing bitter dryness; no hop astringency. Very smooth, pretty refreshing, not overly aggressive, minimal warming 5.75%. Fantastic Citra showcase. Extremely vibrant, juicy, dank, and earthy hops; with a great balanced bready malt backbone. Minimal residual sweetness with crisp dryness. Will buy another pack. Loved it just as much as the base beer, but it feels more resinous, dank, and earthy here. 4.26

De Molen - Cease & Desist

This beer has a really tacky label stating how it used to be called Rasputin before another brewer threatened them with legal action. For me, this label is a bad look. This beer is 5 years old but the label says to enjoy within 25 years. Glad I made it on time.

It’s an opaque near black stout. It’s essentially still. Smells of cherry pie and alcohol. It doesn’t taste remotely fresh but it’s drinkable. Tastes of licorice, alcohol, black cherry, and molasses. It’s sweet and a little tart and there’s some bitterness to make it all work. It’s OK for what it is, but not worth the money for me.

A bit of background before I dive into this one: Prairie Paradise.

You see, I've tried it before, I'm almost certain of it. Whether a sample or a split bottle, I'm not sure, but it's in my memory bank that this is not a new beer.

Yet ... I had it listed as a Want here, not reviewed - and not even logged on Untappd (which is my go-to if I want to track a brew that I don't feel I can give a fair rating due to sample size, personal inebriation, or whatever). So .... this is definitely a clean-slate review, whether or not I've sampled it in the past.

And holy damn, what a beautiful beer! It reminds me of Ten FIDY, itself damn near perfect in appearance. This .... might actually top it in that category. Without exaggeration, more than 30 minutes after the pour, this thing still has about 1/2 a finger of firm foam refusing to quit. I'm reminded of a simple quote from The 5th Element: "Perfect."

As far as the nose and the flavor, I can't even rate this as a flavored stout, as the coconut and vanilla are both mild and entirely complementary. This is really all about the stout base, and it's thick, chewy, chocolatey, mildly sweet, and wonderful.

This is just damn good. I can only imagine that other raters expected more coconut.

Prairie does massive high-ABV stouts perhaps better than anyone else in the game right now, overtaking Evil Twin in my regard. Obviously a huge part of their portfolio involves flavored stouts, but their ability to craft a phenomenal, huge, thick, and flavorful malt stout base is really what drives their beers, and the additives are just that.

    Cheers!

    16 oz. can.
    Canned 10/10/19.
Moderate pour yields a 3/4 white head over a very cloudy body with sticky lacing. Nose of subdued tropical fruit and sweet citrus. Taste of tropical fruit, orange, and tangerine. Feel is a bit soft and finishing with a light citrus pith bitterness. Cheers to Joe for a beer I can get behind!!!

Big Lake Cotton Candy Haze. This was excellent. Lasting rocky head retention/thick foamy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big pink cotton candy, vanilla, tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, honeydew melon, blueberry, raspberry, gooseberry, citrus peel/zest, wood, peppercorn, and pine, hops; with moderate wheat, sugar, white bread dough, light biscuit/toasted malts; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body; creamy/bready/grainy malts, some sticky/resinous/rindy hops in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing bitter dryness; no cloying/astringency. Very smooth/soft, zero warming 5.5%. Awesome Citra/Mosaic showcase. Very juicy, vibrant, and fairly dank/earthy hops; with balanced cotton candy sugars and pale/wheat malt backbone. Light residual sweetness with lingering resin dryness. Perfect balance between cotton candy and NEIPA character. Nothing overwhelming or artificial feeling. 4.03

    Okay, here goes nothing.

Haven't submitted a review yet. Not sure if my phone is up for it. This is Reuben's More-ish IPA. Moreish is a UK term generally applied to cask ales. Thia tastes nothing like a cask ale or an English IPA, but I thoroughly enjoyed it despite it being consumed while watching Lamar Jackson gash my Seahawks into defeat. It's fairly light and crisp, mouthfeel wise, but drinks with a sharp, citrus forward assertive hop flavor. Kinda old school, really, in a good way.

Now I'm about halfway through the latest variant of Iron Goat's hazy series.

Pushing Up Hazy's Vol. 5 has added strawberry juice and vanilla, but both were added with a light touch, so they complement rather than dominate the base beer. This is VERY drinkable stuff.

    Cheers!

Glad to see a review of this beer, which seems to be mostly derided on this forum. If I see it, I'll definitely try it.

I don't know if I mentioned that I'm a bit torn in the WC ... because I, too, am a Cardinals fan. I think it would be great for the Nats to win their first world championship, but if the team that swept my Cards lost at the hands of the best team in baseball .... well, I think I'd be OK with that. :grinning:

    Should be great either way!

    Final beer of the evening...

I'm done with the Southern new beers, so now to a favorite brewer of mine:

    pFriem Family Brewers
    Jammy Pale Ale

    IBU: 32
    ABV: 5.4%

Look is pale straw yellow with a tall, billowing, thick white head. The head has good retention, taking its time dropping while leaving plenty of lacing down the side of the glass.

Aroma is strong; evident as soon as you pop the cap and start to pour. Lemony grapefruit citrus, a little pine, berries.

Taste starts out like the aroma: citrus, a little pine. The berries assert themselves in the middle. The finish is piney and mildly bitter. This beer has a few months on it as I am tasting, so take that into account ("Bottled on" on the label is blank, but this is a summer seasonal that I picked up in September on a trip to the west coast, and am drinking it in October). The taste is not as fruity as I was expecting, it is more toward a traditional APA. But a quite well done APA.

The bitterness lingers into the aftertaste.

The feel is smooth with moderate to thin body. Appropriate carbonation.

Overall, a very nice, refreshing APA.

Happy Sunday NBS players. As a devote Mets fan I can't help but say that I hope they all lose. That said, it's not often it sucks to be Bryce Harper but this has got to be that one time. The team that casts you aside opts for the series while you're rich but dumb ass sits home drooling. Another busy day and we'll see how long I can keep these going.

My new beer today is Hop Palace, a milkshake ipa w/ lactose and dry hopped w/ mosaic, cashmere, & simcoe. The brew checks in at 7% abv, and of course no canning date.

A golden amber color on the pour with murky clarity and a huge head of white foam- way over-carbonated. The nose reacts of hops and malt. I get a little grimace from the nose in anticipation of the off-flavored beer. Big forced hopped presence on the first few sips. A bit of a chemical after taste. Limited and muddled fruit notes of lemon and orange. Moderate mouthfeel that really doesn't drink all that creamy despite the style claim. Lactose is rather not noticeable. Decently drinkable at best but that chemical hop flavor carries out throughout each sip.

Overall, this is just bad. I'm no brewer but if I put stuff out like this I would simply be embarrassed. I'm at a 3 at best,

DESTIHL Cranberry Criek. Excellent sour. Great fluffy head retention/spotty soapy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big sour/tart/tangy cranberry, red cherries, fruit skin/pits, lemon, lime, orange, peach, pear, apricot, melon, red/green apple, red grape/wine, hay, straw, and grass; with moderate wheat, cracker, white bread dough; lighter notes of peppercorn, musty/lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tart/sourness, fruit tang/tannins, and light spiciness on the finish. Medium-plus carbonation, light-medium body, and fairly crisp finishing. Balanced creamy/grainy wheat, lactic, acid, and fruit tang/tannins in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing acidic/tangy/tannic dryness; no pucker/astringency. Very smooth, pretty refreshing, not overly lactic/tannic, zero warming 5%. Awesome balance of juicy/jammy fruit and Lacto complexity; with a great pale/wheat malt backbone against acidity. Minimal residual sweetness with crisp acidic/tangy/tannic dryness. Loved it, no complaints. 4

Happy I Am Drinking New Beer of My Own Free Will This Sunday (Week 765)!
I apologize for joining the party so late in the day. My buddy, Samm P., hosts a blowout party on the 3rd Saturday of every month at his manse in Gulph Mills/KofP, PA & he has extended a standing invite to me since its inception.

When I first attended in Febrewary 2018, I had no idea as to the depth & breadth, plus it being a hike from Lancaster, I would stay overnight & then he & I would go to brunch/lunch on Sunday morn before I would board the train to come home. It has since morphed into my coming in F night, staying over for two nights & coming home.

The crowd is as eclectic as they come, ranging from young'uns as early as ~ 21 y/o to us oldsters. Samm is a VietNam-era USAF vet & Chef Tom is ~ his age, followed by yours truly at 54 y/o & a bunch in between. Beer is brought & opened with little to no thought as to rarity, style, et al. Homebrew, kvass, cider & other fringe beers like mead are also known to show up.

F night was good for both of us as Samm's Yankees won Game 4 & my Pitt Panthers held on v. Syracuse & we prepped the house as well as pregaming from the garage up-for-grabs reefer.

Sa was less so as his Yanks bowed out after a valiant late-innings effort & my adopted Wisco lost to the Fightin' Illini. 8=( Inna meantime, we had an executive chef, a yoga guru, a PPV **** star, a band (!), cigars, mead, costumes & a whole host of crazies in attendance, including yours truly. If you are planning to be in the greater-PHL area on the 3rd Sa of the month & would like an invite, HMU!

Today's parting was such sweet sorrow. Samm had never been to a Mad Mex for a Gobblerito (SW-style turkey with gravy, stuffing & mashed potatoes in a burrito wrap) before, so I CANvinced him to acCANpony me. 8=) Extra gravy & extra cranberry sauce later & he was stuffed. Me? I ate every morsel! I walk or take the bus everywhere so I am burning calories like a champ. He dropped me off across the street at Whole Foods (Wynnewood), where I CANtinued to imbibe before the SEPTA regional rail to Paoli, where I would transfer to Amtrak going home. Our farewell was "I hope that I DON'T see you next month!"

Why? I am again running for public office, this time for School Board, having failed in my two previous bids for mayor. If I am elected, there is an in-brief that Saturday which would preclude my attendance. 8=(

Last week, I FINALLY made the final segue from Platform into/onto Free Will, but just like now, time was against me. I had planned to be home 2 hours earlier, but when SEPTA was delayed, Amtrak overtook them & I found myself stranded at TJ's in Paoli. Ha! Stranded. Believe that!

Well, time for my meager offering of this week:
