I just learned that Hop Stoopid from Lagunitas uses synthetic hops. I would think that fake hops would be good for mega malt bombs, but shouldn’t IPAs use the real deal to get hoppy enough? How can they even pull this off?

Which other brewers out there are faking us out??

It is hop extract, not fake hops. And they are open about it, so not faking anyone out.

Edit: why am I even responding? You're kind of a troll, but the threads do end up being amusing, so carry on I guess.

I use hop extract in Tombstone very frequently and am very happy to tell anyone that cares that I do so. If you think it’s inferior, that’s your problem... you’ll miss a lot of great beers if you decide to avoid hop extract.

They allow CO2 Hop Extract in German beers.

    They still make Hop Stoopid!?

Or is it just more old stock?

The date is unreadable so we'll never know!

I couldn’t tell you, I’m still boycotting Lagunitas from that whole “can” comment/stance fiasco years ago. Guess he looks pretty stupid now in today’s canning craze. Karma is a bitch.

Please define "fake hops". Laboratory developed, hop tasting, chemicals? Like how 7-11 has "prime rib" flavored potato chips?

Help us answer your question by clarifying.

Can someone please educate me on hop extract? Just as long as it isn’t GMO, I’ll probably be ok with it. Lagunitas/Heineken can still take a hike though. Heineken is the worst beer on earth, while Lagunitas Julian dated is just straight stupid.

I believe you meant to say Julian dated is Stoopid. And I second the fact that the ink Lagunitas uses disappears at the first blush of condensation on the bottle.

Many brewers, even tree house, use hop extract for bittering as it provides more consistent results.

It would seem to me that a professional brewer in honkey answered your question, it’s how he makes his living. End of discussion, this thread was closed at #3. Even I’m piling on, but seriously honkey stated clearly and simply what the deal is. So you can really shut this down there’s nothing else to discuss unless the merits of extract need to be examined.

Hop extract and hop oils have both also been used for flavor/aroma hops recently in the USA and have been used for a long time in Germany. Barth Haas released a super critical co2 hop extract for Citra and Mosaic (and maybe others, not sure) which I’ve been using for whirlpool hop additions. In addition to consistency for bittering extract, the “clean” bitterness is, in my opinion, a superior quality.

I'm pretty sure you're aware of this already, but I think it bears repeating for others who are not: Ballantine used to use hop oils for their India Pale Ale several decades ago....I'm sure @jesskidden can provide a lot more insight and details about its history

EDIT: a little blurb from craftbeeracademy.com
IIRC they used Bullion hops back then...Carton Brewing recently did a great job of kinda re-creating the recipe for "Inside Our DNA" (it used Bullion hop oils, it was oak-aged and also used the old Ballantine house yeast, the one we now know as Chico...I guess "Newark-o" didn't have the same ring to it)

The New York Hop Extract Works, in the heart of central NYS's hop growing district, opened in 1873, 20 years before the ad above - so, someone was using it... According to local history, even as the NYS hop crop declined, the company remained opened by using Pacific Coast hops but the company was hit hard by Prohibition and eventually closed in 1930s.

Other companies continued to offered the product - even during Prohibition (Horst).

Any brewer using "synthetic/fake hops" (which don't appear to exist) today would be violating the FAA Act and TTB current regulations, which state that a legal "Malt Beverage" in the US must contain:
Do you also boycott Dogfish Head and Boston Beer Co.?

Totally different in what was said by Sam and the claims laid by Tony who sort of blasted all those who had the audacity to can. Sam's was more of a mission of where he wanted his brewery to go, not what others did or didn't do.

But I get your point.....and I don't drink much if any DFH anymore either.

Guys hops are flowers not stuff that comes out of a bottle. What’s next, barley and yeast extract? I’m not sure how I feel about this whole GMO thing but I definitely want that out of my beer. Beer should be pure and organic not something scientists do in a lab with weird stuff in it.

    “What’s next, barley extract?”

Maybe I shouldn’t bring up the topic that malt extract is an ingredient that could be used to brew high quality beer!?!

    Cheers!
