Well said. Local pride has a serious hand in play with breweries that do great due diligence and find a perfect demographic (locale, with a local story attached), possibly make good enough beer, and thrive. Natty Greene Brewing Co. here in Greensboro is a perfect example. They started in the early 00s in the old part of downtown just as a massive series of investments re-invented the old urban center and now the remainder of many city wide areas. Natty Greenes was named after Nathaneal Greene, a Quaker general from Rhode Island that altered the course of The Revolution. George Washington sent him south to change our history to NOW. Greensboro is named for Nathaneal Greene. The battle of Guilford Courthouse was the last battle of The Revolution before the surrender at Yorktown. Natty Greene brews mostly OK beer, is popular, brews some damned good beers, and is beloved by the region. They also won a big lawsuit brought by the modern "Redcoats".... Timing is sometimes perfect.

This happens a lot, even here. Sometimes the business decisions are baffling to people outside the business.

Perhaps, but mediocre is in the eye of the consumer. Cheers.

What is mediocre beer? I have been to breweries called mediocre that were brewing styles that were not NEIPA, sour, or barrel aged, but nailing those out of fashion styles. The beers were spot on, I got what I ordered, and it was just a well made beer.

Another thought - breweries are a business. They make what sells to the public in volume to stay solvent.

I was just there last year, first visit since they first opened. If you're in that area I'd make the 10 minute drive to old nation.

Plenty of that going on around Albuquerque.

Once you have your production facility set, relatively low risk/low cost to open that second and third locations.

Well you can open ANY taproom near a University and it will make money.

Even Swill, Swill Light and Swill IPA would sell.

Hard to know unless you see the books... could be a move to salvage a failing business for all we know. If one is looking at losses and a failing business and investors who are already $50k/$100k/$250k in... do you double down or fold?
Depends on if investors can be convinced the failures of the business are related to location, business model, or other factors.

Point: I wouldn’t assume an expansion is necessarily a sign of business prosperity. Could be quite the opposite.

This sounds like a headline straight from The Onion. "Mediocre Local Brewery Opens Second Location - Sells Haze Bombs for $24 per Four-Pack."

Regardless, some of the bigger chains are mediocre, including chain breweries. It shouldn't be surprising, really; craft fans may not be enamored with those breweries, but if they can put out a decent lager and a decent porter, they could still sell at volume on draught.

Any idea if they contract brew at all? That could be a source of income that wouldn't fall under their name.

When you see a business that expands against all odds - maybe money laundering?

I’d assume if brew pub 1 is failing there’s no pub 2. So...while you might not like their beers it looks like many do. I’d assume they’re making enough money that expansion is deemed necessary. Unless the guy just wants to set money on fire of course. There’s a few brew pubs here where I think the beer sucks, they’re not expanding, but they’re always busy as hell, and they are very successful. So i’m in minority here, same with AALs, they sell , what we think are mediocre others love. More of them than us.

Exactly. Who decides whether a beer is mediocre?

I think this may be what is going on, invest in spot #2 and then decide whether to close original location. Must be nice to have play money to make more money (guessing this is the case as well but maybe there is a large bank loan..who knows). Also in the new spot, he probably got a good deal on lease/purchase of the property space because a really poorly run brewery that didn't even last a year there. The other 2 relatively new breweries literally next to this new spot are thriving fine at least in terms of foot traffic and they both make respectable quality beer IMO (and ratings and buzz from locals alike). The brewery in question I'd slide as the 3rd rated beer maker amongst the new neighbors, but with some food trucks, bands, trivia/Karoke night Sunday beer yoga (whatever the draws 'em in) nice vibe in the taproom they should do fine.

Review beers independently yourself, then check ratings on social media to check for consistency or not to your own opinion. If hundreds of people and yourself in best attempts at giving unbiased reviews say the beer is mediocre, its probably mediocre.
