We did, love NO. But it’s changed since our last visit, zero jazz and blues. Mainly rock and power drinking 22 year olds with hand grenades. Did find a Zydeco club and it was great. Frenchman St is the only place right now that still traditional. It’s sad they allow the bums and drunks to lay about anywhere they fall, just bad for business.

Yeah . . . we saw some of the same. We did see a roving jazz street band on Bourbon.

Ah, doing a tour of famous places from classic beer labels, huh?

(I heard the cabin on the Celebration Ale label is available for rent on AirBnB, but can never find it to get a res...)

That sucks... but the food's still great, right?

Well, that's better --- and harder to find than blues and jazz outside LA...

The Charbroiled Oysters at Acme are well worth all by itself. First trip to the Pelican Club, also a real winner. I love Zydeco, it’s a very local kinda folk music I suppose.

[IMG]Sorry the sound didn’t hit on Imjur, it’s on my pics. No clue

Felt I should update...and I just noticed that my wife and I took exactly zero pictures together at Cantillon earlier this year.

I do remember those smokestacks saying Jax. Then, long ago, they were already becoming derelict. I don't know much of Atlantic Brewing out of Charlotte, but I have a very nice bottle. It seems to be an interesting brand that was around for a while. It was a good package and I would've tried one in a heart beat....

Well, as you likely know, the Jax/Jackson Brewery is still there, right on the Mississippi, renovated as a shopping mall and a pretty prominent sign but no more smokestack.
The more famous brewery vertical/smokestack-ish sign (next to the smokestack), in NO is now the Falstaff one - recently renovated IIRC, and now part of an apartment complex.

Kinda weird that Pabst, which owns both labels, doesn't do more* with the defunct brands - I mean, there's nothing Pabst likes more than free advertising. Just have MillerCoors put the same beer they likely use for many of the brands in bottles or kegs labeled Jax or Falstaff for the local (and tourist) market... (* Yeah, I vaguely recall a few one-offs they've done maybe with a local brewer w/Jax?).

Yeah, I've never found much info on the Atlantic Brewing Co. (aka Atlantic Co., Atlantic Beer Co.) which appears to have originated as the Atlantic Ice & Coal Co., headquartered in Atlanta but with outlets all over the south. They operated a brewery in Atlanta, pre-Pro, and then built or bought other breweries after Repeal.

The brewery in Charlotte (closed in '56) was one of five they operated. Others were in Atlanta (1955), Chattanooga TN (1941), Norfolk VA (1949) and Orlando FL (1954) - (closing dates). Their other brand was Steinerbru and, originally, after Repeal the Atlantic brand went by the name of Atlantic Old South. Pre-WWII their advertising, and labeling for their Atlantic Ale, featured a black waiter - most would consider it racist today (certainly racially-insensitive) but not much different than the still existing brands like Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben.

In the mid-50s they went with a plantation scene for the cans with a slogan of "The Beer of the South". As noted above, it appears that the Charlotte brewery was the last one to close. Pretty sure I've read that some of that gutted plant's equipment was shipped to Alaska - but there doesn't seem to be an Alaskan brewery that started or even still existed in the '50s.

The brewery is still right there with a restaurant right by where you board the Natchez.
