Rochester Mills Double Chocolate Milkshake Stout. Awesome sweet stout. Lasting rocky head retention/soapy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, vanilla, toffee, cream, butter, fudge, nuts, biscuit, and dark/brown bread/crust; with light notes of licorice, dark fruit, smoke, char, herbal, wood, grass, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light pine, herbal, woody, grassy, roast, charred bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very creamy/silky/bready malts, light sticky hops and chalky roast in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing lingering bitter dryness; no cloying, acrid, astringency. Very smooth/soft, minimal warming 5.75%. Awesome balance of rich malts, lactose, and cocoa nib/powder/butter flavors. Light earthy hops and fruity yeast. Light residual sweetness with lingering dryness. Loved it! 4.13

#3 is moving to a more seasonal beer:

    Bell's Best Brown Ale
    ABV: 5.8%
    IBU: 34

Aroma is sweet brown sugar, slight toasted malts, caramel.

Deep reddish brown, rising bubbles, topped with a tall, thick, creamy light tan with streaks of darker tan head. The color glows garnet red with a backlight. The top becomes uneven and rocky as it recedes, leaving very thick head remnants (too thick to be called lacing) down the side of the nonic glass.

Taste is toasted bread, hints of sweetness without ever becoming sweet, with very mild bittering in the middle, which fades toward the finish. Some coffee-like flavor, but not quite there. Hops add a bit of spiciness to the mild bitterness. The finish is mid-way between sweet and dry, with the caramel and toasted bread malts taste lingering on the tongue.

Body is medium, toward the substantial side, good mouth feel from the carbonation.

Overall, an excellent brown ale. The hops and bittering are nicely balanced by the toasted bready malts. Very well done.

    L: 4.25 | S: 4.0 | T: 4.25 | F: 4.0 | O: 4.25 | BA rating: 4.17

A busy but fun day here in middle TN. Full disclosure: I drank this beer a few hours ago but I got too caught up in the Titans-Chiefs game to do a proper post. Wow that was a great game and I'm grateful for the many gifts that the Chiefs gave us...

Anyway, this beauty is but one of the many fantastic beers that @FlintB sent to me yesterday as part of the SAVAGES BIF. Brian was incredibly generous. I've had a few Speciation beers and this one caught my eye immediately:

The proper glassware is also courtesy of @FlintB. A great looking beer with a hazy, vibrant yellow color and a very small fleeting head. The aroma and taste lined up very well. This one was quite tart up front with citrus notes: lime, lemon, and subtle orange. The barrel brought a funky vanilla oak aspect, and the coconut added an interesting dimension to the beer with a chewy sweetness that complimented the fruit. It was in a sense like a fruity cocktail but without the sugary sweetness. Something that would be dangerous on a hot day outside. The feel was medium bodied with bright carbonation and a dry finish. Quite easy to drink and highly recommended. Thanks again, Brian!

Good morning and happy New (Mystery) BIF Sunday, BAs. Today is reveal day for NBS BIF, Malignant Yard Sale version, and considering I'm on a little mini vacation, I couldn't think of a better time to enjoy a mystery goodie from @thebeers .

Spending the weekend at our cousins cabin in Government Camp, OR. It's a pretty awesome and cozy place nestled at the base of Mt. Hood and a very short drive to Trillium Lake where we took in some amazing views on our little hike.

And of course, had to have a trail beer also courtesy of @thebeers . Went with the Tired Hands, Helles Other People, and you can read that review >HERE< if you'd like.

But now it's time for what New Beer I'm drinking currently...

    Mystery Beer-

I can only assume this is from Tired Hands as it comes in a similar looking 500mL format as another beer sent, with an identical plain green bottle cap attached....

The appearance screams Saison, but who knows? Belgian Wit, American White, Rustic Farmhouse… Either way, it pours a clouded straw yellow and glows overall. The fizz from the pop of the cap relays into a pillowy mass of bone white foam that plasters the glass with ease during it's slow descension. (4.5, assuming Saison)

One sniff and no doubt, Rustic Farmhouse/ American Wild Ale. "Barnyard funk", woody, peppery, and lightly soured aromas. Green apple skins fade over lemons and damp hay. (4.25, assuming American Wild Ale)

Wow. Quite less subtle and soft in the flavor, but that's not a bad thing. Not a bad thing at all. Much more lemony and tart than I was expecting. As the initial flavors reside, the lingering notes of peppercorns, dried flowers (yes, I've eaten dried flowers you smart asses. Who hasn't?), and a musty wood and earthy finish. (4.0, still assuming Wild Ale)

Tart is the obvious first descriptor, but this is also soft, smooth, and light. Well balanced and rediculously easy to drink. The high carbonation fills the belly equations to a rather burpy experience, but that may have also been the poutine I had for lunch. (4.25)

Well, assuming I'm right here, this is one fine Wild Ale. Very enjoyable and it's managing to be quite the magical disappearing act. (4.25)

I'll be back shortly with the unveiling and my official review.

Sixpoint Hootie, a wisely executed NEIPA. Ticks all the right boxes: low bitterness; full, smooth mouthfeel; ample ‘tropical fruit juice’ hop flavors and aromas. On equal footing with some more highly touted NEIPAs.

Welcome to NBS BIF #10 reveal week, NBS friends. I have a coupon beers to review from my magnificent sender @larryi86, who (tying into today’s theme from our masterful leader @lordofthewiens) joined BeerAdvocate two days before me in April 2010.

I came to BA at the recommendation of the beer buyer at my local back in Mankato, MN. He was always willing to provide insight on new and interesting beers, but he recommended BA for those occasions when he wasn’t available.

And he was right. I rarely (as in VERY rarely) buy a beer anywhere without vetting it here first. I am most definitely a BA Advocate of the highest magnitude.

On to tonight’s beers. First up, a long time want that was worth the wait (glassware courtesy of @Ozzylizard in a previous NBS BIF).

A very hazy straw color, this NEIPA features maybe the most beautiful head I’ve seen on a beer, with an ever-so-slightly off-white head that is dense and billowy and fluffy all at once. When I saw it, I thought, “this is the kind of cumulus cloud pilots avoid because it’ll bounce you around.”

And it does bounce you around as it emits aromas both dank and fruity - ripe, juicy oranges followed by bright berry aromas and earthy melon notes. Lovely stuff indeed.

The taste features the aforementioned ripe oranges and berries and earthy melon, and I’m also picking up a peppery flavor (that I’ve found before in Idaho 7 hops, no idea if that varietal is included in this beer) that is traveshamockery good.

The mouthfeel is a bit soft, per the style, but not watery. This is a long-time “Want” of mine, and it was worth the wait. Exceptionally well-executed, IMHO.

Well NBSers, I was pretty close. Tired Hands, yes. A Saison with mixed culture equals Farmhouse or Wild Ale to me, so yeah, I'll take it . Another huge thanks to Arthur for all these gems!

Welcome! You have to use an image host to upload your picture and then you post here using the link to the uploaded image.
I use imgur but there are other options. Imgur is easy if you're on your phone. You can upload from within the gallery on your phone, once you have the uploaded photo, you copy the 'direct link' into the little picture option above where you type your comment on here to post. If you have questions or trouble let people know and they'll help you figure it out, it's kind of wonky to do at first.

Good luck and come back next week too!

Narrow Guage Kofa (Boma). Awesome imperial coffee stout. Lasting rocky head retention/thick soapy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big dark chocolate, dark roasted coffee, caramel, brown sugar, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, and dark bread/crust; with lighter notes of licorice, molasses, raisin, fig, date, smoke, charcoal, wood, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light pine, herbal, grass, wood, pepper, roast, charred, coffee bitterness on the finish. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky/velvety/bready malts; light slickness, sticky hops, and chalky roast in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing lingering hop/char bitter dryness; no cloying, acrid, astringency. Dangerously smooth/soft, mild increasing warmth of 11.5%, minimal lingering booziness. Awesome balance of super rich malts, and fruity/nutty coffee complexity; with solid earthy hops and restrained fruity yeast. Light residual sweetness with lingering hop/char bitter dryness. Very impressive. 4.13

    Hey what's going on?!

I don't have much to say... except I am running out of beer this fine weekend. With that being said I am right now of very few words.

What's new for our hero today?

Poured from the can into a tulip glass.

Very nice clear orange to lemon body, with some good amounts of carbonation. Pours out with a minor gush, but controls a big frothy white head out of the can, and a thick but small retention collar. Good chunk lacing and tall crown too, real nice looking gose.

Base aroma is pretty much straightforward. Good sensing chewy malt on the nose, a little bit of sourness and a touch of lime zest and briney character as well. What a basic gose should smell like.

Palate stays pretty simple. Chewy sensing flavors of wheat with a good bakery density. Parching and mineral light body, but with a hint of malt sweetness just barely accenting a good tartness and salty flavor. Aftertaste is real impressive. A good fresh bakery oven bread finish, mixing in with some of the nice briney salty quality as well. Flirts with a little bit orange and lemon flavors also.

Just a real solid gose, wish people would make them like this.

#2, my “Mystery Beer” from NBS BIF #10, also known as “as much fun as you can have with your clothes on” (to which Mrs O is most thankful). And the awesome glassware is also courtesy of @larryi86.

I’m gonna try to do this “live,” so bear with me.

Pop the top, immediately hit with dank hop aromas pouring from the pint can. The beer is a hazy sunshine color with a sudsy white head. Rated 4.25

The first thing I think after a big whiff is, “Pineapple. And pithy grapefruit. And mango, or maybe passion fruit.” Straight juice bomb. Rated 4.25

The taste is the poster boy for “dank juice bomb.” There’s loads of pineapple and grapefruit, which is per style (I’m so far down the “this is an outstanding NEIPA” road, I can’t see the starting line), but there’s a spicy, peppery flavor here, reminiscent of Alien Church, but different. I’m sure THAT makes sense. Rated 4.50

The mouthfeel is packing a bite, definitely on the firmer side for a NEIPA, which I prefer. Rated 4.50

Overall, this is juicy, dank, flavorful and forceful, which I appreciate. I would bathe in this world-class juice bomb if I could. Rated 4.50

To my beer nerd friend @larryi86, you are a rockstar, sir. The reveal is next.

Smell sorry but very one dimensional and straight forward peanut butter, chocolate, and vanilla bean. Not complaining, but straight forward and pleasant. 4.25

Taste follows peanut butter, chocolate, and a little hint of vanilla. 4.25

Mouthfeel is a little bigger than medium, gentle carbonation, a tad dry, and at 6.3% really easy going down, but also more flavor than most at that ABV. 4.25

Overall this stuff is legit and really tasty, love a peanut butter stout done correct. 4.25
