Happy Sunday, BeerAdvocates! It's been a cold weekend, but we braved the chill yesterday to visit a new brewery called House 6 and were pleasantly surprised by quality and relatively wide selection of beers for a smaller production place. It's a little out of the way for us, but we'll definitely find a way to work it into our brewery visiting routine.

Another routine we are having to get used to is taking our glass recycling to a drop-off site versus leaving it out with the other single-stream recycling materials. Luckily there is a large receptacle on the way to our typical weekend brunch spot, but we've forgotten the glass every other week since the change was made. To be honest, I'm only bringing it up in hopes it'll be at the forefront of my memory when we head out later.

Because really, the only routine we are all here for is that of grabbing a properly chilled beer that we have not yet wrapped our lips around, opening it up, and diving into its wonderfulness. Or maybe its horribleness. What do we know?

Maybe we know what others have said in threads or on the beer's rating/review page. But our own experience of sight, smell, taste, and feel have yet to be sated. Well, it is now time to quench every sense's desire and let the readers of this thread know what each has to say. Hopefully the love you (or your trading partner) showed the beer by purchasing it will be reciprocated in an encounter that will leave you satisfied with the whole affair.

Now it's time I turned things over, to you. Cheers!

Good day New BSers! It's a cold, crisp morning here in NW PA and now that I've got the morning chores started, it's time for a New Breakfast Beer, this week from @2beerdogs and NBS BIF #10 - Mystery Beer Category:

It actually looks orangier than it appears in the photo.

    Abbreviated review:

Received from @2beerdogs in NBS BIF 10 – Thanks Derek! Reviewed 11/17/19.
Mystery beer. Stored at home at 42 degrees and served at 50 degrees (as Derek suggested) in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
    Appearance –
    First pour – Yellow, murky.
Body – Yellow-orange, murky and opaque. When held to direct light, still opaque.
Head – None. A few bubbles appear but they are gone coterminous with the pour.
    Lacing – None.
Aroma – Smells acidic but not enough to singe nose hairs. There is a bit of fruity odor as well, slightly citrusy.
Flavor – Taste follows nose – acidic, fruity, and a bit of citrus. No alcohol (?? % ABV) flavor or aroma, no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – Medium, watery, lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: I’m calling this a wild ale – more full-bodied and flavorful than most of the stuff I drink from Jester King.

    Hi everybody.

1st time posting in this thread. Been lingering and reading it for years now.
(I know, creepy right) So figured it's high time I join ya, geeks!
Im currently unemployed as of late. I will spare you the details. But I'm taking the next few months off to enjoy the holidays and spend time with the family and help out around the house. (Mr. Mom)

With that said I also will have more time for beer. Been extremely sick this week but seem to be back in business. So here we go...

    Epic
    Big Bad Baptist
    Rare Release
    Peanut Butter Cup
    11% abv

    look: 4.5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25

Thick looking dark body with a decent dark brown head that actually lightens to a light brown/khaki color when settled.
Head settles to a generous size cap thru out. Sticky web like lace as well.
Nose is fantastic. Roasted coffee. Dark semi-sweet chocolate. Peanut butter. Light barrel on the back.
Taste is whiskey. Coffee. Sweet chocolate. Small almost burnt like after taste of peanut butter. Nothing over powering.
Body is medium to thin. Med carbonation. Slick mouthful.

I simply enjoyed the heck out of this one. The nose alone made me fall in love. Also the beer it's self is beautiful. Arguably the PB taste could have been a bit stronger. Also I feel each batch may differ. Regardless I've had 4 out of the 5 variants and this one comes in 3rd behind the Brandy & Quintuple versions overall.

Mystery beer. Stored at home at 42 degrees and served at 50 degrees (as Derek suggested) in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.

This is the post-reveal review, after I knew what criteria against which to rate it.

    Date etched on neck: 11/14/17
“Sour wit ale brewed with spices and aged in oak barrels with plumcots and raspberries”.
The underside of the cap has a yellow-orange deposit reminiscent of Brettanomyces sp.
    Appearance – 4
    First pour – Yellow, murky.
Body – Yellow-orange, murky and opaque. When held to direct light, still opaque.
Head – None. A few bubbles appear but they are gone coterminous with the pour.
    Lacing – None.
Aroma – 4 - Smells acidic but not enough to singe nose hairs. There is a bit of fruity odor as well, slightly citrusy.
Flavor – 4 - Taste follows nose – acidic, fruity, and a bit of citrus. Ends acidic and dry. No alcohol (8.7 % ABV) flavor or aroma, no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide. No raspberry, no oak (although part of the ending dryness may very well be from the oak-based tannic acid), no distinct or identifiable spices.
Palate – 4 - Medium, watery, lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4 - I had to look up “Plumcot” – I’ve never seen one locally but the next time I’m in TX and HEB I’ll look for some. Overall, very good - more full-bodied and flavorful than most of the stuff I drink from Jester King.

    Rating 4, rDev +1%.

A new Keller Pils from Sly Fox

Sly Fox has produced a number of Keller Pils beers over the years on a rotating basis. For those unfamiliar with the term of Keller it literally means Cellar in German but as regards US craft beers it typically (often) just refers the beer being unfiltered. So this beer is a Pilsner that is not run through a filter.

    From the Sly Fox website:

    “Bay 6 Pils

    Keller Pilsner

    11.8 OG 45 IBUs 5.1% ABV

This unfiltered pilsner was brewed in collaboration with our friends at Philly’s Brü Craft & Wurst. German Saphir and Czech Saaz hops impart a floral aroma with hints of orange blossom on top of a biscuity malt backbone.”

I asked the bartender who filled up my growler what the reference of “Bay 6” means and he just shrugged his shoulders and said “Beats me”.

I will be sharing my growler with my wife.

Served in Firestone Walker Pivo Pils glasses

    Appearance:

Pours straw colored with a touch of haze and a HUGE rocky white head.

    Aroma:

Wow! Lots going on here!! A complex combination of bready malt, a bit of a yeasty component, and spicy hop aroma accompanied with a notable lemony citrus aspect.

    Taste:

The flavor has a bready malt flavor along with spicy/herbal and lemony hop flavors. There is a firm bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

Medium bodied, smooth mouthfeel and a dry finish.

    Overall:

This beer is Excellent, The combination of bready malt, spicy/herbal & lemony hop flavors and smooth mouthfeel = Excellent!!

    @RobH @rotsaruch @nc41 @KOP_Beer_OUtlet @NeroFiddled

P.S. I have yet to use Saphir hops in my homebrewing practice but this beer has me thinking here.

Howdy NBS and thanks Craig for today’s opener...!

I haven’t posted in this thread in a bit, in lack of any new beer available and because I’m sometimes “busier” on weekends. Forgive me.

Today’s new beer is a lager from Austria .

A 330ml bottle poured into a Guinness Pint, leaving an inch white head fading quickly. 5%abv...

Look is orange, not opaque and rather clear, few to no lacing.

Smells is strong on hops and quite malty on the nose...

Taste following the nose. A pretty nice malty taste and a hoppy, bitter finish making it a very refreshing beer even on this cold, wintry day.

Overall, this is a good lager from Austria, very quaffable and unheard of I assume but for the price tag was well worth it. Doubt it’s available outside of Europe but if around here and lucky enough to find it, buy it!

    Cheers and enjoy your Sunday.

I’ll be home the first weekend in Dec, definitely bringing some of those great SEPA Pils back home with me. Going to get a beer at Brau Schmidt and a steak at Jims on 4th and South. They’re only two blocks a part which is nice.

Happy Sunday, NBS crew! I’ve been wanting to try one of these “midwest fruit tarts” that Urban Artifact invented, so @AyatollahGold generously sent me a couple to sample. This one is the nectarine version...a fruit that I generally love in a sour beer.

    Gramophone - Urban Artifact
Nectarine Midwest Fruit Tart - 7.9% abv
    Score: 4.22 (+6.6% rDev)

    Synopsis:
This beer delivers on what it promises. A nectarine showcase, it’s incredibly juicy, quite tart, but not over-the-top sour. @Jimmy_Kneecaps I’m thinking this is the type of sour you would enjoy the most. It is a bit one-dimensional, but the 8% booze is completely hidden, and I’m finding it hard not to guzzle it down. I want more of these for the deck next summer! Thanks again Dayton.

    Hello New Beer Sunday!!!

I just had an amazing time last night at Blackstack Brewing, hanging out with @Chaz and @GreenBayBA . Getting to finally actually meeting some great members here was just a blast. I so enjoyed it, even though I didn't get home till around 1:30 this morning. I thank you both for inviting me to join in, and we'll have to do it again.

I'll also have to get back to Blackstack again, because they just produce damn amazing beers. Maybe in December, weather permitting.

Now, on to the new beer, and, not only a new beer, but a beer from a new state for me.

Veil Brewing - Bourbon Sleeping Forever. 13% ABV 500ml bottle.

I've never had a beer from the great state of Virginia before today. I was in North Carolina last year, and I easily could have had one, but I was more focused on NC and SC beers. It's a state where my namesake settled back in 1751 (though where he settled is now in West Virginia), and I haven't shown much love for it, until today.

@CanConPhilly sent this beer to me.

Holy cow, what an introduction to beers from Virginia.

This beer is so rich, and deep, and just hitting the spot this morning. Smooth, but not harsh from the higher ABV.

I'm really enjoying this beer, and if I make it back to NC next year, some Virginia beers will be consumed by me.

    Review:

    look: 4.75 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.75 | overall: 4.5

Thick pouring. Pitch black. Chocolate colored head. 1 finger head, and, considering the ABV, the retention is good. No lacing on the glass.
The nose is really rich and deep. Dark fruit, chocolate, caramel. slightly boozy aroma, but subtle.
Taste - I get a decent amount of caramel in the flavor, and that comes in on the backside. Also, on the backside I just get a very faint hint of coffee. Up front I get more of the dark fruit flavors. There's just a hint of chocolate in the middle.
Thick, full bodied. Smooth, but also a bit of carbonation on my palate. Not much of a boozy harshness at all.
Wow, just a good first impression on Veil beers for me. Damn tasty, just tasting amazing today.

This is going to last me a while. I'll be back later for something else new, I'm sure.

Cheers James! I had that one on draft at The Veil and loved it, so had to pick up a bottle. Glad you’re enjoying it. Virginia is one of my favorite states for beer. I’m in Richmond once or twice a year because of how high-quality the breweries are there @vabeerguy . Don’t even get me started on The Answer!
