From Ashley's owners Roy & Jeff More:

After more than 12 years in Westland, Ashley's Beer & Grill will be closing at the end of business on Saturday November 30th.

Come visit us during our last days and thank our loyal staff for their years of service. We're offering some great specials starting Wednesday November 27th

All draft beers will be $1 off

25% off all bottled beers

Trivia will continue for Saturday and all prizes won can be redeemed immediately.

Mug Club members please come in and pick up your mugs (and have a beer while you are there)

FOTO rewards will still be redeemable at Ashley's in Ann Arbor if you can not make to Westland this weekend.

Why:

We have been trying to work with the mall owners to bring the mall up to the standard specified in our lease (like turn on all the lights around us, turn the lights on for the mall signs, plow the parking area, repair the parking field etc.) They were spending about 10% of what they were charging for common area maintenance on actual maintenance, the balance they pocketed. They not only refused to correct the maintenance issues but would give us no break on rent for a dying mall. We just could not keep paying the high rent they were asking for a decaying mall.

We have enjoyed our time as part of the Westland community. My brother Roy and I have met many great people. We've employed hundreds of Westland residents. We think we've helped change the image of Westland for the better by bringing world class events to Westland like the North American Belgian Beer Festival and the Michigan Cask Ale Festival. Look for the Brewery Throwdown to move to our Ann Arbor location in the new year.

TL;DR Westland Mall Management - in whose parking lot Ashley's is located - hasn't done dick to maintain the area, so they're calling it quits. The original Ashley's in Ann Arbor will now be hosting the annual Michigan Brewery Throwdown. No word yet on what happens to the North American Belgian Beer Fest or Cask Ale Fest.

I feel horrible for the staff, some have been there for some time and were great folks. The Ashley's in Ann Arbor is where I had my first Oberon so many years ago. When they opened in Westland it was a Godsend for microbrew lovers in the metro Detroit area. Hopefully they can find another place nearby soon.
