That's an interesting take ("The beer sucks"), given the 12,000+ reviews here that would indicate otherwise.

A classic BC variant for sure.

From the last couple days and no unfortunately these aren’t nationally distributed but on west coast pretty widely available in California and west coast states:

Mother Earth 4 Seasons Autumn 2019 - blend of bourbon barrel aged stouts with vanilla, molasses, cranberry purée, cinnamon. No it’s not nearly as barrel character heavy as BCBS but I find this better than Mon Cheri or Cafe this year. Cost is $9 for 16oz compared to Mon Cheri and Cafe at $23.

Mother Earth 4 Seasons Winter 2019 - barrel aged imperial milk stout with chocolate and mint. Pretty much same as above, cost is $9 for 16oz.

Firestone Walker Anniversary XXIII - always a great blend of barrel aged FW beers. This year was particularly good. $13 for 12oz so this is a bit pricier than regular BCBS although cheaper than all the variants and about on par with Wheatwine.

Then I won’t list them out but a number of Modern Times stouts that while more expensive I found much more enjoyable.

Not trying to knock BCBS, it’s a great beer. The price point on the regular is fine, it’s very reasonable. The price point on the variants is what I take issue with. Why would it cost almost 2x for adding a couple adjuncts? In comparison when Modern Times releases a barrel aged stout without adjuncts compared to with adjuncts it’s a couple dollars more expensive in bomber format. My beef is if regular BCBS is $12 in my area the variant editions should be like $16 and not $23. Shame on me for buying them, I won’t again at that absurd mark up.

I was able to get the Barleywine for 16.99, this year, and I was very happy with the price. The Cafe and Cherri was around $26. I got 2 Cafe, but skipped the Cherri. It just sounded too much like the Bramble last year, which was not up to what I was expecting for the price.

    Did you mean the Wheatwine?

OOPS, you're right. I got the Wheatwine for that price. I'm not the biggest wheatwine fan, but I loved BCBS Wheatwine last year., Sorry about the typo. I'm on my 3rd 10+ beer of the day.

I also do. I enjoyed my bottle of Barleywine last year, and it was amazing. I had my bottle of it around Feb of last year. I haven't been a wheatwine fan, but I loved BCBS wheatwine last year, and was so happy to get a bottle again this year. I've got a lot of beers to share, and this would qualify, but I might just to have to go alone with it. We'll see.

Trying the 2019 and 2018 side by side. The 2018 tastes like an older vintage of 2019, and 2019 just tastes like a typical new bcbs. It's good, but I wouldn't go out of my way looking for the new bcbs. It is what it is... A reliably good, but not particularly outstanding ba stout. IMHO of course.

Wow - I'm drinking a Cafe de olla and it's incredible. Gets even better as it warms, with the casia coming to the front. I suspect the coffee and orange will fade around summer, and this will then be all about cinnamon/casia, chocolate, and bourbon. This is incredible as is, but aged could be good too. This is my new #6 beer out of 821 reviews. BCBS Vanilla 2018, Midnight Orange 2018, and Prop 2018 are all slightly higher on my list.

I had a 2018 a week ago then 2017 the next night. ‘18 is holding up great and much bigger than the ‘17, IMO. Plus, the ‘17, not trying to be funny, made me fart like crazy the next half day and was a little more fuzzy the next morning.

Barleywine pre-2015 was unbelievable. Absolutely a classic in my book.

I'm sure your opinion means a lot to the folks who buy/enjoy every year!

Huge wheat wine fan here and enjoyed last year’s release. Cracked a bottle last night and it was straight apple cider and brett with some wheatwine hiding behind all the off flavors. Anyone else get a bad bottle? Haven’t seen anything in reviews about anything being off, and haven’t picked up a second bottle to compare yet, but assuming/hoping it was a fluke.

My local shop released some 2014 and 2017 barelywine, along with the new stuff. Those were the bottles I was most excited about! Barleywine for life!
