NYC Shops Thread (2019)

Has anyone been to Whole Foods Chelsea lately? Is the beer section still worth checking out? I may go into Manhattan next week and I’m thinking about stopping in for nostalgic reasons more than anything else.

 

I work close(ish) and went for the first time in ages as well the other day (also for nostalgic reasons - my wife used to live close by when we first met, so I’d always go when staying with her).

Selection had dropped (like all WF) from what I remembered. Most of the beer is in that section on the left after you walk past the check out entry. Seems they’ve done away with the section in the far corner. But they had a few good things.

 

Local stuff, or distroed stuff?

Looks like Aslin's Double Orange Starfish is getting some distro. It was one of the first beers I ever traded for and I remember loving it, hoping that this batch we're getting is on that par.

 

Shout out to Good Luck Beer House on 11th Street and 4th Av, Brooklyn. Peeper with a bottle date in 2015.

 

lol there’s a winner. I just found some 2017 iPas in a local bottle shop up by me but that takes the cake.

There’s another spot by me, totally shady lotto and cigs store where they have ancient beer. I bought a bunch of large format Uinta labyrinth bottles from 2012 there, 5 bucks since he just wanted them gone. Also bought some other stuff that didn’t fare as well (had a 2012 captain Lawrence golden delicious that was pretty terrible).

 

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but it looks like some Monkish is on tap at Bar Great Harry and Gold Star.

Clinton Gourmet has better prices than the other places I visit in midtown.

Some Good Beer is two blocks west on 8th street and 5th ave. (5min walk or so) Nice little shop, small but well curated. No drafts

Good Beer is a few blocks east on 9th btwn 1st ave and Avenue A. (10min walk or so) Great bottle shop, good draft options.

Proletariat is a block south of Good Beer on 8th btwn 1st ave and Avenue A. Great bar and beer, small, crowded if busy.

(Pour one out for Milk+Hops Astor Place, which would’ve been right in your spot)

Did Some Good Beer cut out their crowlers? I thought they had a couple of taps in the back. I miss the Milk and Hops there too, a perfect respite spot.

 

They might still have that. I wasn’t aware that was in there.

 

Their 16 oz mason jar is the perfect size for taking to the park

 

My brother in law would like a few Miller High Life Champagne bottles for the holidays, and as the families resident "beer nerd" I have been tasked with this job. Anyone seen them around?
