They were certainly the first brewery I noticed using them.

The early batches of Imperial Smells Like Bean Spirit were so maple heavy I never even tasted the coffee really...but with a Shaun's more refined skill-set, the coffee notes are way more noticeable (unfortunately in this case).

I'd love to see local breweries utilizing Big Shoulders and Ipsento...and more Intelligentsia.

I think they all should be using Intelligentsia.

They always have AMAZING single origin coffees. I’d love to see this as well.

Yes to Ipsento. Surprised they haven’t teamed up with anyone yet, especially being down the street from Rev. Also anyone hear of Moka coffee? They have a location in North Aurora and several across Wisconsin and Minnesota. They make a Jamaican blend coffee with maple flavor that is incredible.

Dark Matter is the best coffee for craft beer in Chicago. They embrace the culture, they follow the model. Look at the cans of iced coffee with variants like vanilla, cocoa, etc. The barrel aged beans. The bombers with wax. The growlers. It's basically what a coffee shop would be if FFF designed it and let other people choose the music.

I'm fine with others playing in this arena and variety. As good as Intelligentsia is, aren't they essentially the InBev of coffee now after they sold out years ago?

Old article, but would seem RAM used tugboat back in the day: https://dailycoffeenews.com/2015/06/08/seven-great-coffee-beers-from-chicago-craft-beer-week/

@Jplachy might be the best reference for coffee/beer questions given Uppers/Downers event he is paid to put on with big beer and coffee money

Maplewood stouts are typically fantastic and Metric is a crucial component.

Passion house and la Colombe are also top notch

Is tugboat significantly cheaper? I assume you have to use a ton of coffee for these beers.

Didn’t know that Intelligentsia got bought out by Peets. Still think they’re one of the tastiest cups around, though I’m not nearly as big of a coffee nerd as beer nerd.

Also a big fan of Ten Drops next to Werk Force

At retail, Tugboat is 12.99 a pack so more than Intelligentsia’s on sale rate that you often see. Not sure about their costs to a brewery of course.

I enjoy Intelligentsia but it’s worth at least mentioning that BCBS had a green pepper note in 2017. Not necessarily blaming that on the roaster. Just that coffee beers are not really improving in terms of quality/consistently in the big picture

No, I blame it on the goddamn 3 month life espresso they used in it. Bastards. And of course that had to be the last stand alone BC coffee.

I know I'm going deep on this comment but I had my first Pressed tonight - Coffee & Chocolate and this was my exact thought. I don't know how one classifies this as a porter, but if you like silky milk chocolate with a bit of a coffee bite on the back end this is a good drink.

I'll second that Dark Matter is great for beer based on their embracing of the culture etc. I would like to put in a vote for Hansa in Libertyville. They make some banging coffee and if you are ever at the Craft Beer Store in Libertyville, make a stop at Hansa. Also considering their relatively close proximity to Lake Zurich I'd like P3 to give them a try.
