I thought this one would be fun, kinda a spin off of "Most Important Decade in the History of U.S. Beer". What years have been the most important years in Beer History? Easy one is 1516, Reinheitsgebot.

I argue that the most important year in beer history is 1880, when Carlsberg Laboratory identified, isolate and propagate individual yeast strains. Beer would be NOTHING like it is today without this early example of "open source" with Carlsberg sharing for all to benefit. Prost Carlsberg!

The introduction of the thermometer in 1760 and hydrometer in 1770, which allowed brewers to increase efficiency and attenuation.

Nah, Jimmy became a Commander of a nuclear submarine and Billy was content to hang around the gas station drinking beer with the boys. Billy Beer was a pretty good marketing effort, though........

8,477 BC. The year my ancestor N'gambo left the barley bowl out in the rain, and days later noticed how much he enjoyed to drink it, how nice it made him feel, and how much fun it was to share it with others.

Yes, getting a handle on yeast had to be the most important thing from a science view point and has allowed all of us to make great beer.

And sometime after that date the refrigerated rail car was invented and A-B started shipping beer coast to coast.

Next year. I'm a big fan of history in general, but I also like to look forward. 2020 will be the most important year in beer history, at least until 2021.
