Up and at 'em BAs! The world spins round once every 24 hours or so, and the current revolution marks what we have determined to be a Sunday. For a while now on this site, that means a time to try a new beer, one that you haven't had a chance to sit and get to know before. More on that in a second.

When I first took over stewardship of this thread with @lordofthewiens, I recall making a few posts about how we like to celebrate the earth making its way around the the sun yet again. I'll be doing such later on today with my parents as we celebrate their anniversary. Despite noting their existence, I do not generally get excited about celebrating anniversaries (including birthdays), at least not every year. However, they do tend to work as good excuses to get together with friends and/or family to enjoy some time with them.

I consider myself lucky to have my parents close enough (now) to be able to get together any time. So in this case, the anniversary just happened to be an excuse to get my parents to try something they haven't in many years. My parents aren't overly adventurous culinarily. However, despite not being beer drinkers (for instance), they have enjoyed some time with the GF and I at a few of the breweries in the area. Will they enjoy their dinner tonight? Time will tell.

Speaking of enjoyment, back to that new beer. We do want to know if you liked the beer or not. But we're since we're getting together, lets have a little more conversation. What do you like or not like about it? Did it live up to your expectations given the description, style, or brewery's reputation or not? What did you see, smell, and taste that led you to your conclusion? Give us a little to go on, and consider dropping some notes on the beer's entry in BA for others to learn from (especially a newer, local beer without m/any reviews).

So, with the stars have aligned in some form of a particular way, let's have a drink. What's in your glass, today? We'd love to hear all about it; after all, we don't get together over new beers every day.

    [IMG] Cheers all.
This place just makes me giddy and my expectations are always through the roof and they always deliver! Poured into a 13 oz Weyerbacher tulip glass canned on 1/14/2020. Pours a hazy orange yellow with a finger plus sticky white head that leaves tons of thin lace around the sides of the glass, with excellent retention. 5

Smell guava, pineapple, tangerine, ripe melon, and apricot. 4.5

Taste follows juicy as heck guava, pineapple, melon, tangerine, and apricot. 4.5

Mouthfeel is big, soft gentle carbonation not flat but perfect, and at 8.3% drinkability is off the charts. 5

Overall again the just deliver and make you think that they can’t do anything wrong. Should probably be a 5 but you all know I am a easy grader for awesome beer so 4.5 it is.

Howdy BAs and cheers Craig for starting this Sunday’s thread.

Parents, GF, in-laws... I have the all three close by which is good and bad. Beer drinkers? Yes and no which is equally good and bad.

Anyway, here’s my new beer this Sunday, Grimbergen Rouge (red). A fruit beer...

Poured the 500ml can into a St feuillien Chalice, leaving a two inches head fading quickly. Color is dark red.

Smell is cherries, and red dark fruits.

On the palate, following the nose cherries, red fruits, and unfortunately a very artificial taste to it. Way too sweet and sugary. Almost an unbearable cough syrup except it’s not out of a spoon but a damn 500ml can. You know what that means and it’s unusual from me: drain pour after a few sips.

Overall: I was expecting from Grimbergen something at least “okay to good” but this is not. Poor or awful and trust me I’m not one to drain-pour my beer like that on a whim. I tried. Hugely disappointed.

Good day New BSers! I have set a record for longevity in my family - everybody older is dead and I've been around longer than any of them. So, since we no longer swing axes or swords while attacking weaklings, now we kill ourselves by drinking. My parents were pretty conventional in the chow arena - meat when they could afford it, starch otherwise (My mother was a HORRIBLE cook - I didn't know what good food was until I enlisted in the army.) We will try anything (other than reptiles - that's cannibalism!) and will eat most - my preference is Asian while Mrs. Lizard is hell on cows. As far as beer - leave out the meat. I still spend part of my time in book stores in the cookbook section - I've got a decent selection of Asian cookbooks and try all kinds of stuff when Mrs. Lizard is OOT. Beer, on the other hand, tends to be some variation on IPAs or Stout Porters.
Todays New Breakfast Beer and from NBS BIF # 10, courtesy of @2beerdogs:

Received from @2beerdogs in NBS BIF 10 – Thanks Derek! Reviewed 1/26/20.
“2018 Edition”. Etched on the shoulder above the rear label “B#573 6/25/18” above “11:19 005479”. Stored at home at 42 degrees and served at 55 degrees (as stated on the label) in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 62 degrees F.
    Appearance – 3.
First pour – Medium brown, clear.
Body – Dark brown/black, opaque. When held to direct light, a very deep red-amber, translucent. No legs.
Head – Large (Maximum four cm, aggressive center pour), tannish with large bubbles nosily popping, gone within a minute after the pour is completed, leaving thin partial ring of tiny bubbles, fed by effervescence. While not fizzy, the head demonstrates no tendency to last. At 18.9% ABV, this is not surprising.
Lacing – None, again 18.9% ABV.
Aroma – 4 - Has an almost watery raisin aroma with some weak wood and possibly bourbon in the background.
Flavor – 4 – The flavor is somewhat elusive, starting slightly sweet and a bit fruity, without bourbon, oak, or hazelnut. The nasal raisins seem to be dominant. No alcohol (18.9% ABV as marked on label) aroma or flavor, but massive numbing of the tongue and soft palate as it warms while being held in the mouth. Alcohol on the exhale. No diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide, no hops.
Palate – 4 – Medium, just short of syrupy, lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4. The appearance in unremarkable, looking like any headless imperial stout. The aroma is most like Flying Dog’s Raison D’Etre, at least to my burnt-out lab nose. In the flavor I find no hint of hazelnuts, oak, or bourbon, just a generic sweetness with a hint of DARK FRUIT, something I didn’t taste (other than raisins) until I was typing this summary. Palate feels good, but I’ve corked the bottle after one glass, so I don’t wake up with my head on the keyboard and beer leaking onto the motherboard (Incidentally, Mrs. Lizard has miraculously appeared and approved the corking of the bottle for later. Maybe today I won’t sleep through Noir Alley!) Overall, I’ve probably rated this too high, but it’s from The Bruery, so, by definition, it HAS to be a superior brew.
    Rating 3.94, rDev -13.2%.

I believe Raison D'Etre is Dogfish Head.

We didn't have much in the way of adventurous cuisine growing up. Like you, it took moving out of the house and earning my own wage to get to try out many of the foods I now really enjoy.

    Good morning NBS
I am ticking a new beer? style this morning complements of @woodychandler
    [IMG]
    The review:
500mL can (I think) stamped 19/07/19 19/07/20 (6 months old) poured into a tulip pint glass at fridge temp, no ABV listed on can (can't read anything as it's 100% Russian). The beer pours mostly bright dull brown with light khaki head that's gone in 60 seconds. The aroma is literally liquid rye bread. The taste is cherry coke, molasses and rye with a tangy twist and some next level sweetness. This will become my new frame of reference for cloying. The mouthfeel is medium to thin bodied with very low carbonation and the least dry finish ever. Overall, it's a Kvass. What the heck would I know about it.

To be clear, I asked Woody to hook me up with a few examples of styles I have been unable to put my hands on. We are extremely un-diverse here in southern IN, and ethnic food and drink is hard to come by. Cheers all & enjoy the new beer in your glass today!

Something old is new (once) again!

Last year I discussed an ‘update’ to Victory Hop Wallop:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/new-beer-sunday-week-725.602337/#post-6343178

Well the brewers at Victory are at it once again in performing another ‘update’ to this beer. Last year Hop Wallop was brewed using the following hops: Citra and Simcoe. For the 2020 version of Hop Wallop they added some additional hops to the mix, this year’s version has a total of four hop varieties: Citra, Simcoe, Cascade and Chinook.

So, last year’s version was solely new school hops but for 2020 a combination of both new school and old school.

Does ‘more’ schools mean a better beer? Or is this a situation of “too many cooks spoil the broth”?

    Let’s find out!

Served in my Spiegelau IPA glass:

    Appearance:

A brilliantly clear golden color with a white head.

    Aroma:

Wow! There is a lot going on here, a complex combination. There is some fruitiness, citrus, pine, some resin, some cedar, some…

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with a complex combination of flavors: fruity, citrus, pine, resin, cedar,…No one flavor dominates and the flavors seem to come in waves. There is a notable bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

Medium bodied with an off-dry finish.

    Overall:

In one word OUTSTANDING! In my opinion Victory has hit a HOME RUN here.

Pitchers and catchers report to spring training in about 2 weeks.

Cheers to Victory for making a very good beer even better!

P.S. For those of you who are fans of ‘regular’ IPAs I would strongly recommend that you run right out to your local beer retailers and buy some Hop Wallop but make sure it is fresh!!

Ok, so my first beer is coincidentally on theme today, as it is an anniversary beer. And not just any anniversary, no no. This is one of those that is easily divisible by our favorite base number of 10. It is by a brewery that has been around for four of these spans, and one that is fairly highly respected in these parts. Of course, this is Sierra Nevada's 40th - Hoppy Anniversry Ale.

There is a whole other thread about this beer on the forums, and I have peeked in there occasionally. A few of you have posted the beer in this thread, as well. Given what I've seen in reviews, I am thinking I'll be right around a 4 on this, hopefully upwards of 4.25. But let's see:

And what I am seeing is quite nice. A very light haze (relative to today's beers) with a considerably sized foam-bed of a head. The head smooths to creamy as it falls (more slowly in my glass with its nucleated bottom, but similarly to my GF's smoother glass). Nice mountain-scape head around most of the glass, slightly more erratic in others, the lacing is strong across the board.

Aromas include a lightly toasted malt with a decent dose of grapefruit and a little bit of orange marmalade. Background scents include a little bit of lemongrass and a light spruce note that grew a bit with warmth. The hop profile initially reminded me a little bit more like a southern hemisphere hopped IPA. As the spruce note gained, it seemed a mix with the PNW hops the label indicates.

The beer is bitter-forward, though the malt give a light toasted cereal counter, though the flavors are fairly neutral at first. A bit of an herbal note comes next, one that I feel could turn towards that garlic/onion if it gained strength, but it does not. The pine the label mentions is coming out from the background by mid-taste. Lingering bitterness is nice and I feel noticed longer thanks to the dry nature of the beer.

The beer is medium light, and pretty damn clean. I find myself wanting a little bit more malt up front, which might or might not require a tad more hops, but that would fill out the beer a little more.

I tend to let beers warm slightly from fridge temp for NBS, but I also like to see how the beer changes as it warms. Sometimes things change, sometimes not. Most of the time the changes do not affect my overall enjoyment or ratings, but sometimes it does. This is one definitely worked better for me as it got to what is likely the more typical preferred IPA temps. Even though the flavor profile didn't change too much, it got a bit more pronounced to me.

The GF likes it and said she would order it again, but specifically mentioned it not being as good as SNPA or Torpedo to her

What was the date on your bottle, out of curiosity?

When Dirt Wolf first came out, I really liked that beer. For whatever reason, I was not buying that much of it after a while. The we stopped by Victory (a few years ago), and it was on tap. I do not know how new the batch was, but wow! was that a powerfully and wonderfully hopped version of the beer. Given that and your review, I may have to pop by a beer store and see if there is some the version of Hop Wallop available.

What you want to look for is the enjoy by date on the label - small font, white ink.

The bottle in that photo has: ENJOY BY 09 MAY 2020".

This bottle is from my third 6-pack that I purchased. It is my understanding that Victory uses a 5 month best by date so this bottle is from December 9, 2019. I would encourage you to seek out a January bottle date. Even though this bottle is only 1.5 months old there is a noticeable drop-off of hop aroma/flavor in this beer. The others I drank earlier (3-4 weeks ago) were absolutely glorious!!

    Cheers!
