(Un)Happy with this New Format on Beer Sunday (Week 779)!

What in the holy Hanna-Barbera is going on at CANporate HQ?! This horizontal format is for the batty cats! Holy twisted surrealism, Batman! (Edit: This apparently had something to do with how the site was loading on my PC & has since CANrected itself. OTOH, we may be getting a CANs only forum!)

What's NEW? Well, pussycat, it ain't NEW DelMarVa (+ DC) this Beer Sunday (Week 779)!

Ever start an undertaCANing & suddenly realize that it was MUCH more CAN you had bargained for?!? No? Well, lemme clue you in on the Tar Baby that is the DelMarVa (+ DC) portion of The CANQuest (tm) backlog! I thought that I would eadicate a decent chunk of it with a regional CANcentration, only to find myself in a morass of no deposit, no return. :slight_frown:

Miso sad & CANfused! Meh!

Happy New Odds & Sods As a ChANge of Pace This Sunday (Week 779)!

One of my (many) takeaways from the (as-yet inCANplete) DelMarVa (+ DC) morass is that they do not make enough Lagers to suit this zoot suit with his reet pleats. 8=( Over the past Summer (2019), I tried to down & drown myself in as many Pilsners asI CAN find as I was CANfined to Chez Woody following CANcerous surgery. I was left bereft & unsatiated. 8=( The quest CANtinues as The CANQuest (tm) marches on!

For @TheDoctor : Lucky! Lucky jammy bas**rd to be able to meet my hero, Stan Hieronymous! His Brewers' Association book on Hops has been read & re-read by this hophead MANY times, despite my not being a brewer. I love that book & would really enjoy meeting him.

For @zid : Keep making comments & I won't send you any beer! Oh wait, I never have. ;=) This was a case of ask & ye shall receive, in a good way. Yesterday, I arrived late for English fitba & just as I asked which teams were playing, they flashed it on the screen! Inspired, I asked for a million dollars to appear in front of me. At that moment, a Brinks truck crashed through the window, destroying the bar & killing us all. Be careful of what yinz wish for, boys & girls!

    Hey what's going on??!

Looks like a happy hoppy happening Sunday here. Pretty good weekend, quite productive.

Was way overdue for some new beer runs, and got some in. Things are going well... so off to the races let's get this started shall we?

What's new for our hero today?

Poured from the bottle into a large snifter glass.

Deep dark mocha forming head, rich and lathery forming with a good easy making two fingers. The body color is classic opaque and dark, with a good balance of thick and light oil sheen, mixing dark black/brown walnut with an actually almost reddish purple hue. Excellent looking stout.

Aroma continues some greatness. Thick molasses with a sense of light cherry and grape like tones. There's a sense of peanut butter here as well that's actually quite large on the nose. This unfortunately tends to overpower much of the other aromas coming off the beer. Some faint flirting tobacco and char carbon as well. Unfortunately it's very berried.

The palate makes up for it though. First sip is a nice light body with excellent touches of light cherry to berry like dark fruits. The mouthfeel is lacking some of the round oak character, but still brings excellent purple grape flavors. The finish goes large into that peanut taste though, and there's a large amount of excellent charing bitterness. Hits lots of charcoal and ash on the finish. Warmth of the beer, mellows out much of the beer on subsequent sippings..

Very tasty stout, and always look forward to The Abyss every year, it's rarely disappointing. A mix of real impressive character, but with some of the flavors unexpected and not melding as nicely. This would be a great cigar beer if that's your thing.

    look: 4.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25 --- 4.28/5

Left in the Dark a 10.2 ABV Imperial Stout Aged in Bourbon Barrels From Untied Brewing in New Providence NJ. Untied Brewing open 1 year ago this beer was brewed for their 1st anniversary. Everything they brew is at least good. What they do best is Porters & Stouts. When it comes to heavy duty (10+ ABV) Stouts they knock it out of the park. IMO Left in the dark RIS was the best beer Untied had brewed, ageing it in Bourbon Barrels was a no brainer. It pours jet black with a dark brown long lasting head. Powerful aroma of Bourbon and malt. The taste is also Bourbon and malt. This beer is balanced with both flavors until the finish when the Bourbon takes over. The mouthfeel is full. Overall as good as any BBA Stout I've drank and better than most. An excellent brew.
For Ba's nearby there are bottles (750s) for sale at the brewery.

I’m dedicated to trying new beers, imo sours should be in my wheelhouse. I love drinking my apple cider vinegar, it would be interesting if that was 6% abv. Not sure what’s up next, maybe a Cascade, maybe not. Any suggestions would be appreciated from any BA.

As we are approaching the next NBS BIF season, I think it's a good time to reflect on the purpose of that BIF: to increase participation in this thread. And so, I have saved this beer - but not only for this thread. What better beer for my 2555th review than, well, a beer literally named 2555? :grinning:

This beer, courtesy of the incomparable @SammyJaxxxx , is Kane's seventh anniversary ale (2018). For this one, they brewed a Belgian Quad, aged it in rye barrels for a year, and then blended it with previous anniversary ales. Wowzers!

I've been very, very impressed at Kane's barrel program. They put a lot of patient time and care into aging and blending beers, and the results are usually excellent. Let's see if this one not only lives up to expectations, but is worthy of carrying their brand as an anniversary offering.

The nose is fairly straightforward, and the base beer tells you all you need to know: Belgian Quad, rye whiskey. It's very similar on the palate, as well. Think a Quad on the dry and spicy end, with sweet and boozy tones from the rye, as well as a spicy rye bite. The barrel aging also contributes a sharp, mild sourness, by no means unpleasant but a bit of a departure from a quad profile.

I have no idea what the other Kane anniversary ales contribute to the overall blend (although I assume they are also Belgians, and likely barrel aged), so I can only remark on the finished product (this isn't like a Firestone Walker anniversary ale, where you can perhaps pick out the contributions of Parabola, Helldorado, Bravo, Abacus, and the like).

What I can say is that the care Kane put into this brew is evident on the palate. Whatever styles and barrels may have gone into the blending process, the result is seamless and delicious.

Easy full bodied slow sipper. While there is a slight bite from the rye, overall this is a beer you can easily savor, despite the sky high ABV.

Nope never. Only Lindemans and Duchesse, like I said I’m about a virgin on these styles, but I can see the danger signs ahead, $$$$$$.

Lindemans is pretty good but nowhere in the league of Duchesse and Rodenbach which as TheDoctor wrote before are simply extraordinary.

Grimbergen Dubbel was the first Belgian ale I ever tried (abbey or otherwise). I didn't quite know how to appreciate the dry spiciness at the time, but I was blown away at how flavorful - and boozy! - it was compared to the German lagers that first introduced me to good beer.

    Shame this isn't any good.

Alright, on to the next one.

Captain Lawrence's IPAs are sorta hit-or-miss but I generally like trying them because, well, look at this shit! Gorgeous label, cool idea... and how can I lose with a hand like that?

Pours a semi-clear (but likely still unfiltered) golden color with some orange highlights. Intense head of bone-white foam that leaves behind a lot of chunky, characterful lace. Good surface coverage even after it sinks to a quarter-finger. Decent legs overall, too. I'm all in.

The nose here is exactly what I expected, which means I am in no way upset. Super citrusy and resinous with a nice, subtle but apparent hit of crystal malt mingling with the fruity, pine-y elements. Centennial's doses of grapefruit and orange pulp mingle very nicely with the lightly-grassy/floral Cascade, and the CTZ does a good job with a bit of pithy citrus itself. Definitely a little sweet with a touch of sulfur. Hoping it'll be a balanced affair!

Oh ya, that's the stuff! This is fun as hell and super dank. I find it hard to believe my can is almost exactly a month old, because this has a ton of character to it as if it had just been canned yesterday. Pithy citrus, super-dank pine resin, and lots of aggressive bitterness in here, though it's all well-balanced, especially with the on-point malt bill. Slight crystal malt in the early stages of each sip, but the transition to the finish is almost instantaneous and super harsh... in a good way. This is like the epitome of the old West Coast IPA with a bigger body to it. It's not a smooth drink, as the bitterness is a little punishing, but it is a really enjoyable experience.

My first Belgian ever definitely was Leffe Blonde which is ridiculously common here and everywhere. Still a good beer I enjoy but after that sipped on Delirium, Duvel, Chimay which ruined it for me.

Then I came across BA and was acquainted with Murican beers...

    Overall:
Overall solid old school WCIPA, well done SN! 4.5

Had no intentions of buying any further to go beer due to current inventory, pivoting to pick up 6 or 12 more while they are still fresh. Don't sleep on this beer.

Speaking of anniversaries, January 26 marks a terrible anniversary and unexpected.

The first statewide prohibition was enacted January 26, 1836, a day which will live in infamy. This day in 1965 also marked Jimmy Page's first number one hit. Not as a member of Led Zeppelin, nor the Yardbirds, but as a session musician for Petula Clark's first of many number one hits, which you may also recognize from Seinfeld.

May check in later with more entries today, enjoy your New Beer Sunday and Cheers!

Double Fortune is a DIPA from Common Roots.
-opaquely cloudy, deep yellow-orange with a 2 cm foam cap. The tap pour hosts a light tangerine aroma and flavors of orange fruit and pulp. There is a bit of mango too the hop bitterness is moderate. The mouthfeel is very smooth. A bit of alcohol heat is detectable, but in all this is very enjoyable.
