Not sure who out there cares about this stuff, I think its information that needs to be shared.

I have worked at Night Shift for four + years and have witnessed the company decline from a happy, vibrant place to work to a tryanical dictatorship where good people are undermined at every turn by company leadership. This month the two most senior employees at the Lovejoy Wharf location (one of them my manager) decided to leave the company because of how they were treated by the President, Rob Burns. They both told me that they left b/c of lack of empathy, lack of support, lack of direction, lack of encouragement and some generaly nasty behavior. Apparently Rob thinks its ok to demean staff in public and in email and use HR to sniff around disgruntled employees to find justifcation for his questionable feedback. They both just grew tried of his bullying and moved on. Worst of all, Rob hardly ever actually visits the location to connect with staff or meet with managers so he actually has no idea what is really going on.. he just sends his passive agressive emails, waits for a reaction then makes the person feel like shit..no matter what.

I have good friends in most parts of the company so I know this behavior is common. A lot of experienced people have been forced out the company by Rob. Over the last couple of years an ex Sam Adams CFO, an experiened Director of Marketing, a very experienced Director of Hospitality, a senior hospitality GM, all got fired while working direcly for Rob....these are all people who were successful before Night Shift and will be successful after. All while Rob hires his wife (with zero relevant experience) to run the non-beer biz (failed and bailed), the wine biz (failed and bailed) and now the coffee biz. Basically she was brought in to spy on staff and feed info back to Rob...sad really. Rob also hired his old man into a no show sales job...hilarious right...nope.

From what I can see Rob Burns is blinded by his own hype and is slowly but surely destroying his own company. His two partners need to step in before he turns the company into Lord Hobo.

Time to move on I think, it was fun while it lasted.

If "destroying his own company" means starting a successful distribution company, the Love Joy location, a food truck and coffee company, expanding at Everett, and the soon to be opened Philly location (their biggest yet), then sign me up for him "destroying" some things for me too.

And why is turning into Lord Hobo necessarily a bad thing? Aren't they doing well too?

Ooooohhhh, love a good hatchet job. Will be on the lookout for placement of other bad mouth pieces on other pages. I can say that Night Shift isn't one of the breweries now suffering financially from my present inability to consume beer/alcohol, so I have no dogs in this fight.

You're making a lot of claims, do you have anything supporting these claims or just your word? If you think you or someone else has been wronged, I'd take that up with Night Shift or hire an attorney to do so for you.

As someone who has worked in this industry for 20+ years, and worked for some real scumbags, I feel your pain.
From my point of view coming on to BA and posting like you have is not really the place to vent. It makes your point seem petty and vindictive. At the end of the day if the person who writes your check wants to be a dick and drive good people away, it is their choice.
I think a lot of people who get into this industry think its all sunshine daydreams and everyone is working towards one goal of making great beer. But it's called "work" and not "fun" for a reason.
Good luck to you. I hope you find a better place to work that aligns more with your passion and ethos. Cheers.

I mean... you could have made more or less this same argument for Craft Beer Cellar at one point. I have no basis to say one way or another but Night Shift's success to this point doesn't really disprove any of the accusations presented here.

I probably didn't make it clear.

That's what I meant, they're successful. As far as I can tell he's done nothing to destroy the business. It's successful and continues to grow.

I wasn't speaking to how he treats his employees. I have no clue about that.

This reads more like jaded employee who didn't evolve with company growth, than some sort of incendiary whistle blowing.

Owner of large business growing business in a very crowded industry shows lack of empathy? Maybe you need to work with a few CEO's

Welcome to the real world @banjoplayer2020

News flash: sometimes work sucks and you have to work with people you don’t like. The options are pretty clear but I’m sure you already know

I think we'll need more evidence than the statements of a BA user who created their account just to post this missive. I would not be surprised to hear that there are unhappy people at Night Shift who don't like Rob, not because I don't think he's a good guy but because that's the nature of a growing company. He probably doesn't visit Lovejoy that much but then again given all the things they are doing I can't imagine he can be everywhere at once.

I kind of doubt he's a bully though. I kind of doubt that the president of the MA Brewer's Guild doesn't play nice with others. He's been fairly active on BA replying directly to posters here. Given some of his statements I'm fairly certain its him and not someone else responding for him. Just doesn't strike me as a guy who is an asshole as the OP is making him out to be.

    Hmm...

Account started today, coming in hot with some serious mud. Is this a post and run thread or do we hear from the OP again?

Are you sure NS wouldn't be able to figure out who you are? If not, a bold/stupid move to post this regardless as it's not the forum for it with/without concrete evidence. If so, you might want to have your resume up to date.

I'm cool with employees wanting to vent here about how shitty it is to work at such-and-such brewery, but dont expect we're all going to grab pitchforks and torches about it. I know Rob comes around the forums from time to time, and i hope he doesnt feel the need to respond to this. I have other reasons for not being a big fan of night shift, but i have no problems with Rob himself.

Pretty cool that people are basically gleeful at the idea of someone losing their job because they had the gall to criticize their boss.

No one is gleeful. I read through all the posts again and didn't catch that sentiment at all.

Do you think this is the right way to approach something like this?

OP could/should start with his manager and or HR if he is unhappy with the conditions. He can also seek employment elsewhere. He should also use a bit of tact. Lastly, it isn't some shift manager he's criticizing. It's the founder/owner of the company. Not saying they can't be criticized, but one should be prepared for potential fallout from those criticisms.

My point exactly. If it was a shift manager I might actually have a problem with it.

    Hello all,

Happy Monday to me! Wow, certainly hurts to read this but I appreciate the feedback - that's the only way I can learn and grow as a leader and person.

Night Shift Brewing was started as a small family business with a passion for beer and determination to Craft Better. That continues to be the guiding light to this day. For us, Craft Better extends well beyond the liquid inside a can - it includes the company culture, our fan's experience when they visit us or interact with our team, and how we can impact & improve our communities. We aim to create a culture that encourages good ideas to come from anywhere, it's where we all work to build the best idea.

Of course, we wouldn't go into details about specific people on a public forum. But it's absolutely challenging to work at a fast-growing company in a competitive industry - we compete in multiple ones, too (distribution, restaurants, brewing, coffee, etc.). Sometimes, great folks aren't a good fit for Night Shift and vice versa.

We definitely hire our family to be involved. We are an independently owned FAMILY business. We take great pride in it. Besides my own family, we have many other families that work here. Husband & wives, siblings, cousins, etc. That's what makes this place extra special. And we aim to always put PEOPLE & PRODUCTS over profits. That's as true on day 1 as it is today.

I also spend countless hours every week helping fellow entrepreneurs in the beer world and beyond. I nearly universally say "yes" to a conversation, meeting, etc with anyone who reaches out. Help explain our wins and losses, help them problem solve their business, or just share knowledge. I fully believe that, collectively, a lot of small businesses can do great things for people and communities. I should do everything in my finite power to support that.

We always welcome feedback both from fans and team members. My office door, my bar stool, and my inbox ([email protected]) are always open for a conversation on how we can continue to Craft Better.

    Cheers,
    Rob

Nice to see not a lot of folks joining OP in a bunch of anger. Unfounded accusations should never inspire people to make unsupported conclusions. Glad to see intelligence so far prevailing in the responses.

Good thing he didn't make unsupported charges of racism, this same BA crowd would be getting the pitchforks and lighting the torches.

If this was Mandolinplayer2020 talking I may be inclined to listen, but since I don't really like the banjo, I am forced to side in favor of Night Shift and to continue buying Whirlpool.
